His play since we acquired him speaks for itself. Solid, steady, willing to stand up for his teammates. It’s not the first time a player on a bottom dweller with not great numbers has gone to a playoff team and played well, and it surely won’t be the last time.
It will be interesting to see if you dare show your face once the playoffs have started. But of course you have already made your mind up. Nothing short of the Leafs winning the Cup and McCabe winning the Conn Smythe, and you probably still would have the same opinion. smh!!!

I just would have preferred someone who would make the team better like Ekholm. I think McCabe is a fine replacement for Holl for the next 2 season since their cap hits are a wash, and I'm hopeful he can bring a similar level of play that Holl has for us. That said, Dubas paid an arm and a leg to get him when better players were available who didnt go for crazy packages. I've been around long enough to know Leaf fans always over hype their new players no matter what. Dubas is not a genius and McCabe isn't our savior. He's a downgrade on Muzzin who Dubas failed to adequately replace. Our defense is worse then it started at the beginning of the year.

And my face isn't going anywhere so you better get used to it

Agreed. I liked what I saw of Lafferty, and I think JT is better suited to the wing now.

I was just flipping the middle lines the other poster had used.

I could also see:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Lafferty - Nylander
Knies - ROR - Jarnkrok
Kerfoot - Kampf - Acciari
You will kill Willy playing him with JT .. they are oil and water .. Willy needs to play fast and furious especially in playoffs .. JT is a boat anchor to him

I like that Holl is out of the lineup. But Rielly with Gus? That could be a sketchy pairing. And why is Simmonds not only in the lineup. But playing with JT?

WTF is Keefe doing?

What da f*ck???????????????? Rielly got stabilized by Lily last game and Keefer changes that up .. freakin stupid beyond belief .. watch Rielly get crushed again on Saturday night

Using just about any of those proposed line combinations, and giving ice time based on how well the lines are doing in that game, you could easily see that.
To many times in the past, he has not been rewarded with more minutes when he has been good. I hope he gets more minutes this play off, if he deserves it.

Kind of seems like Schenn is basically locked into that sheltered 3rd pair role with Rielly, and Gustafsson is playing as a placeholder. Whoever doesn't lock up that 2nd pair spot with Gio will likely be the 7D for game 1.

I had agreed with that until I saw O'Reilly added to the line. I really liked the puck retrieval and work along the boards by JT and ROR. Nylander complimented their work with his ability to anticipate where the loose puck will come out. I think the trio could work very well together.

3 slow guys can work nicely together as they all move up and down da ice at roughly same rate

I love that McCabe is on the top pairing, it only further highlights the idiotic hot takes around here saying that he's not better than Holl.

If I have sounded like I’m pro-Dubas, I’m not. But I do like the moves he has done this year, and I believe that the reason he got McCabe was because the Hawks would include Lafferty. Like it or not, our window is now, and I believe Dubas has done as good of a job as he could, with what cap room he had available. If they don’t go far this year, I want Dubas gone, and changes do need to happen to the core. However, this team is the deepest we have had under Dubas, so there are no excuses now.
Dubas did not do a good job giving the money AND term to Matthews and Marner. That was bad! Whoever is the GM on their next deal, I would hope he can get them to take at least some hometown discount.

I agree they aren't the best pair, but Willy seems to still be a force even with JT, and with Lafferty playing center I don't think JT will be as much of a handicap.

But yes, I'd rather see JT on line 3.

On the other hand, I think ROR would be a better choice to help Knies.

Keefe’s trying so many different combinations it makes me think he’s getting prepared for injury scenarios and wants a back plan for any potential situation. I also think he might try different lines at home vs on the road.

Home lineup at start of playoffs (assuming Knies comes in good enough to be an upgrade over 1 other forward in the lineup):

Bunting-Matty-Marner
JT-O’Rielly-Willy
Knies-Lafferty-Jankrok
Kerfoot-Kampf-Acharri

IF Knies is still too raw

Bunting-Matty-Marner
JT-O’Rielly-Willy
Kerfoot-Lafferty-Jankrok
ZAR-Kampf-Acharri

He could also run the 11 F 7 D lineup for home games to try and get the best of Tampa. On the road I can see O’Rielly being moved into the 3C role to have a line of
Knies-O’Rielly-Jarnkrok. It’s all very interesting, let’s see what happens

My dream 3rd line would be..

Knies - O'Reilly - Marcus Foligno

That would be a great tough 3rd line.

Foligno - is sneaky good and I don't see Minny ever trading him. I see him as a clean version of Tom Wilson but he does have injury issues (only because he plays hard hockey but I believe he might do better here with the Leafs medical staff).

O'Reilly - enough said

Knies- this kid is the perfect type of player/rookie to soak in the leadership qualities he would gain from both Foligno and more importantly O'Reilly. If Knies reaches his top potential I can see him becoming a Foligno/Orielly type of player. Gritty, good offensive awareness, and good in his own zone, tough player. He's got all the tools for it, I believe that line would be a nightmare to play against in the playoffs.

Playoffs

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Tavares-O’Reilly-Jarnkrok
Kerfoot-Lafferty-Nylander
Holmberg-Kampf-Acciari

Another year of Dubas surrounding the core 4 with a sad sack of crap. O'Reilly better have one more 28 year old level season in him to carry the depth squad.

McCabe and Lafferty look like they came from a lottery team indeed. Don't even get me started on that scrub Gustafsson. Why is Luke Schenn even here?

Dubas has even made the no.1 Engvall hater (me) miss Engvall

Bunting Matthews Marner
Jarncrok Lafferty Nylander
Tavares O'Reilly Acciari
Kerfoot Kampf ??????

Bobby McMann deserves another look before the playoffs. For now try something like:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Lafferty - Kerfoot
Aston-Reese - Kampf - Acciary

McCabe - Brodie
Rielly - Schenn
Giordano - Liljegren

If McMann looks good, O'Reilly slots in to the 3C spot when he comes back and Lafferty moves over to 3RW. Kerfoot and ZAR can battle it out for the 4LW spot.

Im so impressed with McMann right now id try him with Willy and JT too. But its more hope then expectation. If it worked Id hope for OReilly/Knies/Jank as a third too. I get thats pretty big expectations on McMann and Knies tho

Game One:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - O'Rielly - Jarnkrok
Kerfoot - Lafferty - Nylander
AstonReese - Kampf - Acciari

McCabe - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
Rielly - - - Schenn

Starting to feel this now in the playoffs if fully healthy by then:

Jarnkrok-Matthews-Nylander
Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Knies-O'Rielly-Lafferty/Kerfoot
ZAR-Acciari-Kampf/Kerfoot
