IF the "swap" that's been rumored happens, I agree pressing the reset button might be the best thing for the long-term future of hockey in the desert. However, it would also certainly suck out loud for the fans in Arizona in the short term. Even if/when they get a replacement team, there is still the stigma about losing a team that will stick with them for long time (believe me, I've been through it twice here in Atlanta). Plus, who knows how long it will take to come to fruition, and there's still no guarantee that Muerelo (or anybody else involved) can pull it off.
That said, IF the SLC/Phoenix swap is the plan, I hope it comes to fruition for the sake of all the Coyotes fans. And IF it does, I have a modest proposal:
1. The Coyotes name, brand, logos, records, etc. should, obviously, stay in Arizona for the new team, IF there is one, and SLC should choose a new name and branding.
2. In return, they should return the pre-1996 history/records of the Jets v1.0 to Winnipeg
3. The Jets, in turn, should return the Thrashers v1.0 history/records to Atlanta IF an expansion franchise is awarded here (my understanding is that the NHL currently owns the Thrashers name, branding, logo, which would be part of the deal IF there is an expansion team and IF the prospective owners choose to revive the name and brand).
