With Our top 3 paid offensive players (over $23 M in salary this year) only scoring 5 goals - with none on the abyssmal PP - further advancement was basically impossible. Neanderthal John and his Flintstone strategic "system" with no breakout or transition game and a non offensive strategy or sustained possesn pressure riding his favourite horses into the ground of course makes this the only logical outcome. The losses of Staal and Clowe were most likely also very major.
I am going to say what most here will not like to hear - The NYR (skilled) Europeans put on a heck of a Better playoffs than the North American contingent of the team. Brassard of course excluded. That is quite the politically incorrect statement - but certainly correct anyways. Yet I Still hear cries for more size, JAM and north south players. Good luck with that...

Damn, I really thought the Torts hatred here was just a very vocal minority. Unbelievable to see how much worse it is than I thought.

Just curious: are most of you Yankees fans? I feel like those who're clamoring over Torts are reflexively posturing about the coaching staff because it'd be exactly what fans of the Yankees would expect out of a New York team.

I'm a Mets fan. Torts needs to go. The powerplay has sucked for years. The transition game, breakouts, and puck possession time are all terrible. The team has struggled to score for years despite offensively talented players on the roster. None of the young defensemen have bloomed offensively despite several (Del Zotto, McDonagh, Stralman, and now Moore) having tools to do so. He's completely inflexible. He's gotten basically whatever he's asked for with this roster and they still aren't contending.

He has no idea how, when, or what adjustments to make. If something's going wrong his process is never at fault. It's always completely on the players. It may be the players' jobs to execute, but it's his job to get them to execute. His system appears to frustrate his own players as much as it does their opponents.

The marks are not "absolut" marks, but rather how the players performed compared to the expectations:

45 Arron Asham: B Best "enforcer" in recent years, showed some offense with a wicked shot
43 Martin Biron: C Decent backup, but I think he regressed
16 Derick Brassard: A What more can you ask for? Showed some creativity that we haven't seen here in quite some time
22 Brian Boyle: C Pretty bad regular season, but was one of the few that showed up during the playoffs
24 Ryan Callahan (C): C- Ok regular season, playoffs were worse. Has to be better
29 Ryane Clowe: I I liked what I saw, but is was just too few games
4 Michael Del Zotto: D Desaster in the playoffs, seems to regress while he should really improve
15 Derek Dorsett: D Seems to me like a pretty stupid player
44 Steve Eminger: C I think he has done ok even as a regular, good #7
97 Matt Gilroy: D+ Once was an offensive dman, or am I remembering it completely wrong? No offense whatsoever, some defensive mistakes
5 Dan Girardi: C+ Not as good as last season, but still a warrior
62 Carl Hagelin: B- Was our best palyer at the start of the season, then disappeared. At least showed something in the playoffs
32 Micheal Haley: I Can't say I noticed him much
40 Roman Hamrlik: I Brutal in his last game, but also not enough games to grade him. He's done anyway
20 Chris Kreider: C Yes, Tortorella didn't really do him many favors, but Kreider also didn't show much during most of the season. At least turned it up in the playoffs
30 Henrik Lundqvist: A- After a slower than usual start he turned in yet another Vezina-calibre season. He saved us in many playoff games, but also let in quite a few soft goals in the Bruins series. Hence the -
27 Ryan McDonagh: B+ I think he was our best defenseman overall, but he didn't quite reach last year's level
17 John Moore: B+ Really like what I saw, McD "lite". If he improves, we have a very good defense
61 Rick Nash: C His regular season was mostly good, he did what we expected and what we payed for. But then he disappeared down the stretch when we were fighting for the playoffs and he never quite recovered. Our prime offensive player just has to do a lot better in the playoffs
28 Kris Newbury: D I just don't see what he brings to the team. Richards was bad, but I think he was still better than Newbury
8 Darroll Powe: C- Better than Rupp, but a black hole on offense
14 Taylor Pyatt: C+ Strong start to the season and decent finish in the playoffs. In between though, he was MIA
19 Brad Richards (A): D- Not good enough. After turning it up a bit late in the season I hoped for a good playoff performance, but he did just nothing
18 Marc Staal (A): B+ Probably tied with McD for best defenseman, but his season was cut too short. If only he had worn a visor...
21 Derek Stepan: A- Great regular season with a fantastic performance down the stretch. Couldn't nearly keep it up in the playoffs though
6 Anton Stralman: A- For someone signed off the scrap, he has completely exceeded expectations since then. Even improved from last year and was maybe our best defenseman in the playoffs
36 Mats Zuccarello: B+ Much more effective than in his first stay here. Even in the playoffs he found room for himself and helped our offense. I hope he'll be back

John Tortorella: D No concept for the offense, no adapting, poor man management
Mike Sullivan: F The powerplay was a complete failure and it cost us
Benoit Allaire: A- He's responsible for Lundqvist, so he gets his mark
Glen Sather: B- UFA signings were average, the price for Clowe seems too steep, but the Gaborik trade looks great right now

Arron Asham: Still don't understand why he was scratched. Played some great game. Would have like a little more fighting. B-
Martin Biron: NHL Backup. Not much else to it. 5 hole problems, but still very solid. Plus a great team guy B
Derick Brassard: We <3 Brass God A
Brian Boyle: Overplayed. Offense we all know. Still extremely overrated on defense. Screens our goalie way too much. D
Ryan Callahan: Had his ups and downs this year. He's still Ryan Callahan. C
Ryane Clowe: Played very well for, and was intimidating, which we lacked. Keep him. B-
Michael Del Zotto: Worst season of his career play-wise, and his most confient season don't make a good match D-
Derek Dorsett: Only eleven games, but he showed some great skill, and did his job as a pest. Took Rat face out of the game too. Refs seem to have it out for him though... C+
Steve Eminger: Not an NHL defender, but a solid #7. Keep him around, but when he has to play, no more than 10 minutes C-
Matt Gilroy: Looked better than Del Zotto when he played. No offense, but surprisingly solid in his own end. I'll take it C+
Dan Girardi: He's always been carried by his partner. This season exposed him. Played some good games in the playoffs, but singlehandedly cost us some. Move him if the price is right D+
Carl Hagelin: Didn't really improve from last year, and seems to not be more than a 40-50 point guy. Still a solid performance C+
Micheal Haley: Not afraid to get dirty, but Dorsett does the same thing, and is better at it. AHL guy, but fine for an emergency call up C
Roman Hamrlik: His career was over before we picked him. Just remember that guys. Find it hard to grade him...
Chris Kreider: Pure ****. Then purely amazing. Hopefully he can do well outside of the playoffs next year F/A
Henrik Lundqvist : He was no where near as good as last year. Rebound control. Seeing through screens. Puck handling. He could be one of the all time greats, but has to work for it C
Ryan McDonagh: Was looking as good as last year, but not better for most of the season. He was a god in the playoffs though. Hopefully a sign of things to come B
John Moore: He's a great offensive defenseman. Clown uses him as a defensive defenseman. That's how we ruin prospects B
Rick Nash: Great season. Still needs to learn to pass earlier sometimes. Took a while in the playoffs, but looked great in the end. B
Kris Newbury: Career AHLer. Leave him there to rot or let him walk to Europe D
Darroll Powe: Great defensively, but why do guys lose all talent when they come here? Still better than Rupp C
Taylor Pyatt: You guys give him way too much ****. He scored at the pace we expected him to, and should be used as a screen on the powerplay. Marshmallow though... C
Brad Richards: An enigma to say the least. He actually played well going into the playoffs, but fell apart again. I'll reserve judgment, but give him another shot next year
Marc Staal: Our best defender, by far. **** off if you wanna trade him A
Derek Stepan: The only A+. What a ****ing season. Glad we traded Anisimov and not him A+
Anton Stralman: Generally solid, but makes some ugly mistakes. Has a shot too, so he obviously can't be on the powerplay B-
Mats Zuccarello: Thought he was done. The crow tastes great B+

John Tortorella: **** you F-
Mike Sullivan: **** you F-
Benoit Allaire: This is the goalie coach? If so, he's not really doing a good job of helping our goalie fix his problems F-
Glen Sather: He didn't even do anything this year anymore. I'll give Gorton a B though

Sorry. In what universe does a Vezina quality season earn you a C..? You've got to be trying to stir **** up because that's ludicrous

F Mike Sullivan see above
FBenoit Allaire ""
B Glen Sather No problem with him, loves the things he is doing, just get a coach that can do something good with the talent.

I also think people who blame this on Sather's have not watched this team at all this year.

Get a clue please.

I get that the internet provides you with anonymity so you never have to face any consequences for talking to people like crap. But it's pathetic how the default for so many here is to hurl insults and barbs at people and have no respect for people's opinions. Get over yourself your feelings or opinions are not any more valid than mine. Maybe you could ask me to defend my position oh what a novel idea that would be to talk to someone on a discussion board instead of asserting your opinion like it's fact and denigrating someone with an opposing viewpoint.

Sather has presided over this team. this team has failed for well over a decade. This team has been an utter joke in terms of managerial decisions (literally). I fail to see how putting some blame on the architect behind this constant stream of incompetence is clueless. Care to explain yourself? Redden, Drury, Gomer, Richards, presiding over numerous top 10 picks which utterly busted during the first part of his tenure. Presiding over numerous failed seasons in terms of not winning the division or even making it past the ECSF with one exception in over a decade. Lots of evidence backs up my opinion but it is just my opinion and if people want to credit him so much for the teams competitiveness since the LO that's fine. I put the credit on Lundqvist & Jagr. Without them 05 and 06 would have been disastrous years. Bottom 5. We probably would have made some of those horrific signings too anyway. Give me a reason not to blame Sather at all

Jets and Rangers . Torts has until next year to fix this abysmal PP and offense. Good coaches figure it out. We were beat soundly all season on both ends of the ice very frequently imo

Playoffs:

Asham--chipped in with a couple nice goals--more than I expected. Had a problem keeping up with the Bruins. C+
Boyle--played strong throughout the playoffs. B
Brassard--proved himself a big time player. A
Callahan--played hard as usual--didn't produce enough. C+
Clowe--inc.
Dorsett--I like this guy and think he's going to be a great addition. Some dumb penalties drop him to a C.
Hagelin--his speed and skating are great. Not great along the boards. Could chip in a bit more offense. C.
Haley--did okay with limited minutes. C.
Kreider--some games he looks real good--some games you don't know if he's even playing. Moved up to Nash's line he got better. C.
Nash--played against the other team's top d-pairs but even so the Rangers needed more production. C-.
Newbury--did his job in limited minutes. C.
Powe--defensive plugger. Almost no offense. C-.
Pyatt--stepped up his game from a sorry regular season. Played physically and chipped in some offense. Wish he played meaner. C+
Richards--pretty much sucked throughout. F.
Stepan--like Cally he played hard throughout. Chipped in some hard fought goals. Needed to produce more. B-
Zuccarello--played hard and made some nice plays--would have been nice if he scored more and his size can be a detriment when his line gets pinned in its own zone. B-.

Del Zotto--mediocre performance vs. the Caps--brutal vs. the Bruins. D.
Eminger--I'm okay with him as a No. 6--forced into more ice time--he played hard but was in way over his head. Effort was there. C+
Girardi--logged huge minutes. Mostly very good performances with a couple stinkers. B.
Hamrlik--crapped out on the series winning goal. He's old and he's done. D.
McDonagh--our best defender throughout. A.
Moore--played pretty well for a young defender pretty wet behind the ears. Excellent skater--good with the puck and in his own end. C+.
Staal--inc.
Stralman--one of our best players these playoffs. B+.

Lundqvist--played great though I've seen him play better. He wasn't the problem though. B+

Tortorella--C+.

C+ 45 Arron Asham Vet 4th liner, nice shot, not sure why scratched?
B 43 Martin Biron Not bad for a backup, good team guy, hopefully Talbot is ready after next year.
A 16 Derick Brassard Look forward to seeing him next year. Not afraid of the big stage of NYC.
B- 22 Brian Boyle Rough regular season, but seems to play well in the playoffs, I like him more than most.
C 24 Ryan Callahan (C) Numbers were there in regular season, but he seemed off many nights.
C- 29 Ryane Clowe Slow, don't want him back, save the money and draft pick.
C+ 4 Michael Del Zotto When he has confidence he is great, when he doesn't he looks like what he looked like in the playoffs.
C- 15 Derek Dorsett Not many games, seems like a dumb player, obviously a small sample size to really judge.
C- 44 Steve Eminger 7th dman who always plays too many games do to injuries.
D 97 Matt Gilroy AHL player.
B 5 Dan Girardi Hopefully he is not overpaid after this year by Rangers.
B+ 62 Carl Hagelin Like Hags, great speed, 35-40 point player.
INC 32 Micheal Haley 13th forward type.
F 40 Roman Hamrlik Enjoy retirement, waste of a claim.
F 20 Chris Kreider Can't pencil him into the top 6 again like this year. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
A+ 30 Henrik Lundqvist Thought he could have been better in the Boston series.
A 27 Ryan McDonagh Rough start to the year, but just a machine, especially vs OVI
B+ 17 John Moore Happy to have him, should only improve.
B 61 Rick Nash Good regular season, tough playoffs, but he had a bunch of shots, seemed to try and do too much.
D 28 Kris Newbury Good player for the Whale, loves to take an awful penalty.
C- 8 Darroll Powe Hands of stone, good PK guy, if there are cheaper options put him on waivers at end of camp.
C+ 14 Taylor Pyatt Thought he was very good in the playoffs, long stretch of bad play in regular season, again if there are cheaper options go with that.
F 19 Brad Richards (A) Bye Brad.
A- 18 Marc Staal (A) Damn shame.
A- 21 Derek Stepan Great year, didn't put up the points in the playoffs, but had some big goals.
A- 6 Anton Stralman A great signing, happy to have him next year.
B+ 36 Mats Zuccarello Earned a contract, Bruins not the best matchup for him.

C+ John Tortorella PP needs to be respectable, think the players like him, think he gets a full training camp, and at least a few months, and see where the team is at from there.
C Mike Sullivan PP is terrible, he does well with the dmen though.
A Benoit Allaire If Hank likes him then he is fine in my book.
B Glen Sather Gabby trade looks like a positive, too many picks for Clowe, has to make a smart decision on Torts, if he thinks there is someone better go for it, but don't just fire him to fire him. I don't blame him for Richards, team needed a 1C, and Brad turned into a 4C in 2 years, just awful. A bunch of teams were in on Richards, shame it's not going to work out.

What? He was the best d man when healthy...and you gave Girardi and Cally A's...

Don't bother trying to argue with him about Staal. It's about as productive as trying to talk a cat into not sleeping all day.

Richards got 0,8 PPG and still got F from all of you? 3rd in points.
Yes, he didnt play that good for some part but when Rangers were fighting for a spot in playoffs in last 10 games he stepped up and big time. Ah, you fans.

You all just wanted too much from Brad, Gabby and Nash.
Really all you should get F for making so high expectations from never knowing what this team can actually do.
