Post-season NYR report card

I think this is an overreaction. There is a solid core here to be a cup contender. Players like Lundqvist, Callahan, Stepan, Nash, McDonagh and Staal are good enough to build around. There are also very good secondary pieces like Stralman, Hagelin, and Brassard. I refuse to believe that this team cannot win a cup. You go and get a coach with a different style who doesn't only preaches grind and jam and you add a big shot from the blue line like a Yandle type player and you have just as good of a chance as anyone.

All the big guns on offense pulled a no show this year in the playoffs. Does it happen again? I don't know, but i'm not confident enough to say it doesn't either.

We have some great players. Hank, Steps, McDonagh, Staal, Nash (when he decides to show up in the playoffs). If Cally returns to 2011-2012 form and Brass DOESN'T return we have 4/6th's of a pretty good top 6.

But pretty good is it, and I don't think that's good enough. With Brad Richard's suddenly becoming the worst hockey player on the team I just don't see us having enough offense, which has been the issue year in and year out.

We'll see how the young guns like Lindberg and Fasth do, but I don't know man. I don't believe the failure of the offense is entirely on Torts, and if it's not then we're in for more of the same.

Players that stay: Nash, Hank, Step, Cally, Brassard, McDonagh, Staal, Girardi, Moore, Stralman, Hags, Kreider,

Players in doubt of return (Bold I hope do not): Richards, Pyatt, Zuke, Eminger, Del Zotto, Gilroy, Hamrlik. I expect DZ to get traded.

Players who can leave/stay: Boyle, Asham, Dorsett, Clowe, Haley, Newbury

Get rid of Sullivan. They will not remove Torts. Sully is in charge of special teams. They were the wrong kind of special this season. That could have changed the season. Bring in someone to run the PP. If Sully stays, keep him for PK and Defense ONLY. Need someone to put in an offensive system.

Lundqvist is not an A+, or an A.

He played well overall, but the bruins series was not a good series for him.

With the way the Bruins played..let me put it like this, 41-year-old Jagr looked like a force to be reckoned with compared to our 29-year-old playmaker; their 4th line outplayed our top lines.

Oh, and special teams, advantage, game set match, Bruins.

Brassard, Lundqvist, Zuccarello, McDonagh, Boyle, and Hagelin played pretty well. Stepan was inconsistent. Nash was way too close to non-existent. Callahan was terrible. Del Zotto sucked. Girardi had some bad nights. Stralman was great until he got hurt. They didn't seem to have the puck or generate much for most of the post-season.

Gaborik and Richards both failed miserably..they were supposed to be 2/3rds of our 3 headed monster, instead, 1 was a scratch and the other was at a beach.

We lost this then.

John Tortorella - C-
Mike Sullivan - F- (PP is his job right? fail.)
Benoit Allaire - A+
Glen Sather - D..Gabby trade worked out, but the offseason moves, other than nash, failed to address our weak middle of the lineup. If we had addressed that better in the offseason, we wouldn't have had to trade Gabby.

Benoit Allaire nfi
Glen Sather ME/ME, he still sucks

Team was about where I thought they'd be. Pre-season I had us finishing 5th in the east behind (in order) Pens, Bruins, canes (lol), habs

As has been mentioned elsewhere the entire team was like a yo-yo all season

45 Arron Asham — C, missed some regular season games, was effective in the playoffs
43 Martin Biron — C, played his role well
16 Derick Brassard — A, he came here and blew everyone's expectations out of the water. 12 points in 12 playoff games.
22 Brian Boyle — C-, his great postseason keeps this from being a D.
24 Ryan Callahan (C) — C, had decent numbers in the regular season, but seemed off all season (perhaps since separating his shoulder?). Was not very good in the playoffs, either.
29 Ryane Clowe — C, Played well, but too many injuries.
4 Michael Del Zotto — C, another up and down season for DZ. Had an amazing start, fell back to earth, had another great spurt, and then struggled in the playoffs.
15 Derek Dorsett — C, not much of a sample size. I like what I see, though.
44 Steve Eminger — C, played well in his role
97 Matt Gilroy — F, he sucks
5 Dan Girardi — B, was a little up and down, but more good than bad.
62 Carl Hagelin — B, another very solid season for Hags. Should probably be on the third line next year.
32 Micheal Haley — C, not much to say
40 Roman Hamrlik — D, came in here, ate up minutes, wasn't very good, but he wasn't an abomination, either. Better than Gilroy.
20 Chris Kreider — D, although I think a lot of it has to do with some poor coaching. He had a resurgence when placed in the top-6 in game four, his best two games in quite awhile.
30 Henrik Lundqvist — A. He was meh in the Bruins series, but for the other 55 games, he was his incredible self. Another year of finishing in the top-3 for the Vezina.
27 Ryan McDonagh — A. Would have liked to see him take his offensive game to another level, but he had a very good season. He was incredible in the playoffs, though, and his offense seemed to be better.
17 John Moore — B. Came in and pretty much forced Tortorella to give him minutes, very promising young player.
61 Rick Nash — B. Great regular season, very average playoffs. He needs to be better next season.
28 Kris Newbury — C. Can't really complain about Newbs.
8 Darroll Powe — C-. Great PKer, great energy guy, literally worthless offensively.
14 Taylor Pyatt — C+. Had a hot start, sputtered until the TDL, then when put into a proper position, re-found his game. Was also excellent in the playoffs.
19 Brad Richards (A) - F-------. Hot garbage.
18 Marc Staal (A) — B-. Was great when he was playing, but he hasn't been playing.
21 Derek Stepan — A. Took a huge step forward in the regular season, and had a very good series against the Bruins, IMO.
6 Anton Stralman — A. Steady all year long, never found myself complaining about Stralman.
36 Mats Zuccarello — B. Exceeded my expectations. Looked to improve his skating and strength, is also extremely feisty. I think he could breakout next year.

John Tortorella — D. More bad than good, although there was some good. His style of play is still ancient, the PP is a disgrace, and his coaching the playoffs, on the whole, was highly, highly questionable. Did a decent job in the Caps series, but he was manhandled by Julien.
Mike Sullivan — C. I give him credit for how he's handled the D. But man, this guy cannot come up with a good PP scheme. Needs another assistant.
Benoit Allaire — A, I guess. Goaltending is this team's best asset.
Glen Sather — B-. I like most of the moves he made. Still think Gorton needs to take over full time.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. That's how they've been playing this year. All over the place.

As: Brass, Stral, McD, Henrik, Stepan
Bs: Girardi, Hagelin, Biron, Dorsett, Pyatt, Zuke, Powe, Clowe, Moore, Nash, Sathers, Allaire,
B-: Eminger, Boyle, Asham, Staal, Callahan,
C: Kreider, Del Zotto, fill ins
C-: Sullivan, Tortorella, fill ins
D: Richards
