Pederson being optioned to AAA. Wonder if he could be had and if the price is right... could be a good buy low candidate in the offseason. They need a legit CF, 3 years of Pillar for 3 years of Pederson?

Hernandez/Alford/Pederson for 2018?

Aoki or Carrera for the 4th OF spot?

I'm not at all against acquiring Pederson, but if you project Alford and Hernandez for starting spots next year then they definitely don't "need a legit CF".

Also, Pederson's CF defense rates quite poorly and his overall value over their three years in the league is less than Pillar's. You're just trading defense for offense.

What are the defensive rates for Alford and Hernandez like? Would the Jays be able to move either to CF?

Im 84% sure he meant the dodgers when he said they need a legit cf'er. Could be wrong though

Tom Koehler picked up from Miami. Nice pickup considering the issues this rotation has had. I would expect him to be slotted into the rotation over Tepesch.

Reese McGuire continues with his surprising increase in power. He hit a homer in the bottom of the fifth, and now has a three game home run streak.

Reese McGuire up to 5 homeruns now. Had 4 career homeruns before this season so maybe he's finally starting to tap into his power. Hadn't really hit much at all in the minors before this season and its possible it's small sample size because he hasn't really played much this season but it would be great if this is him really starting to breakout.

I believe he has a year of arbitration left too.

Indeed he does. He has been lights out at AAA. If he can have a nice final month with Toronto, he could be brought back as a #5 for next year or potentially even be trade bait. It is a nice addition. Low risk with a potentially high(ish) reward.

He can be much much much worse than Biagini as a starter. Biagini was actually pretty good as a starter despite bad results. 3.81 FIP 5.60 ERA. But if you think the ERA is bad I bet you can't wait to hear what Koehler's was 7.92, and the FIP was only about a point better.

He can be much worse than Biagini, and based on his MLB numbers this year, probably those other guys too. That's not to say he will be, but he has clearly demonstrated this year that he can be. And that's in the NL East.

Fun fact, Koehler has the 3rd worst fWAR this year of all starters. There is some potential reward here but he has been really horrid. But there's virtually no risk, and the cost was basically nothing so why not.

It would be like us trading away Goins, Barney, or Maile if we had suitable replacements. We'd probably be happy to get a A ball scrub out of them as we'd have long since given up on them.

Just looking at some of the prospects but for the most part the positional players did very well this year. On the other hand, the pitchers struggled. Some due to injuries (Zeuch and Maese) and others due to inconsistency (SRF and Greene). As I am typing this I see Greene has a good start.

I always thought that MLB could dismiss the entire roster of umpires and replace them tomorrow with trained amateur umpires and nobody would notice the difference. And if the new umpires were subject to culling based on performance review, umpiring would improve immensely.

As someone who umpired at a national level, amateur guys would get absolutely wrecked in the majors. Umpiring is so much more than calling balls and strikes and safe and out.

And honestly, outside of a couple of guys the quality of umpiring in the majors right now is absolutely fantastic. Its the game management that's been lost. Far too many instances of umps actively starting conflicts with players, and that should never happen.

Couldn't be more wrong. The difference would be massive and incredibly noticeable.

Absolutely. That's a huge problem in the game right now. Umpires are there specifically to mediate conflicts, and there are far too many who go out of their way to start them. When a player is mad about a call and walks away, the appropirate action for an umpire is to let it go and move on. It seems like the most common reaction now is for the ump to stare down the player as he walks away, just waiting for an excuse to restart the argument and toss him. Then there's the more extreme end where some umps actually follow the player or continue to engage once the argument is over.

Umpires shouldn't have to put up with the **** they have to deal with, but a significant number of them are the instigators. THAT is why Angel Hernandez should be suspended or fined, not because of his ability to make the right call. You can't be impartial when you spend so much time actively goading players into doing something to warrant getting tossed.

Speaking of umpires.
I forget the guys name who tossed Beltre for moving the ondeck tarp but he actually rung a guy up in the Nats vs Angels game the other day when it was only strike 2
