So maybe I miss heard it but I swear I heard Sawyer essentially call Laine stupid? Said something about him using high hockey IQ and made a side comment that it was rare or something?

Didn't hear it obviously since I was there enjoying the game experience in person but it wouldn't be the first instance of a pot calling the kettle black.

If we can be anywhere near .500 at the quarter mark with this early schedule with a lot of hockey, and a lot of non-conference games, I think the team can get hot, and back on track, with the two players I mentioned coming back.

Not sure I agree but I do like the reasoning. Having lighter schedule for conference games gives us a fighting chance even if a little behind.

Buff had 1PP goal all last season, I don’t think his shot will get the respect we hope. Probably a wraparound but I’m not sure. He’s still an upgrade, though. Our zone entries went down the drain when Buff went down last season.

I don't think Morrissey will ever be a star #1 d man, just a very good top 4. We are placing a ton of responsibility on him right now.

He is already a top-pairing defenseman. You will not find 62 better d-men in the league than Morrissey. He is borderline a #1 d-man already...probably somewhere in the top-30 - 40 in the league at this point.

Wheeler is a big guy , he should make his living right in front of the goalie especially when he shouldn't be shooting the puck when Scheif and Laine are out there with him . Scheif and Laine both have great shots , Wheeler not so much .

That's exactly it. Shooting isn't Wheelers strength, he is better utilized around the net, either in front or behind where he can pass to both Scheifele and Laine, and sometimes cut to the net front with the puck for close up shots. When shots are coming in, he can go and help in front of the net providing cover. Use the shooters for shooting and the brawn for close quarters. Connor in the bumper spot would be fine, he also shoots better than Wheeler.

From what I have seen, Laine and Scheifele are better passers than Wheeler or any of the others, they can cross that ice on PP any time. They should be the ones making those crosses. Back in 16-17 I remember Laine constantly finding Ehlers in that spot but Nik would never bury them. Scheifele is more accurate from that distance.

And what possible downside is there to try to change it up? The PP was great first half of last season and they’ve been chasing it since. Is trying a new set up for a few games so terrifying to Maurice for any particular reason? Literally the only change they’ve made to the first unit in the last year, is to take Laine of all people off it for awhile. Anything to protect Wheeler.

haha I actually heard that as well. I don't think it was meant that way, but sure sounded strange.

I think he was talking about that particular play being rare...
