I feel like the Devils glut at defenseman is about 9-11 players deep when looking at next season.

Salvador
Volchenkov
Larsson
Greene
Tallinder
Fayne

6 NHL guys returning

Zidlicky
Harrold

2 NHL Free Agents to be

Gelinas
Urbom
Merill

3 prospects who can probably push for NHL jobs.

So, for me, the Devils don't have much to worry about when it comes to having enough defenseman for next season.
Yeah, dealing a D-man just means we get to give Gelinas or Urbom a shot. Signing another depth guy to do the AHL/NHL straddle like Harrold afterwards shouldn't be hard.

As long as the team keeps winning, I'm perfectly fine with Lou just sitting tight and waiting until the deadline when teams are willing to overpay for a top 4 d-man that can log 22+ minutes a night. It happens every year. If you can keep from "needing" to make a deal, a d-man like Tallinder's value surely will increase come April 3rd. I would just rather see Larsson playing in the minors, or at least being rotated into the lineup more often until then.

I actually agree. We may need the injury reserve. If the team can keep finding ways to win with what we have, then holding on to our assets to maximize their value makes a lot of sense.

If teams like Detroit and LA keep losing, they might get desperate.

Or better yet a team like Tor thinking they need that 1 player to make the playoffs.

This is a very good point. I agree, but I still wanna see Larsson play so bad haha. I don't wanna wish for an injury I just wanna see the guy in there.

Kings are such an overrated team. They got hot at the right time last year and barely made the playoffs at that. They also had the luxury of being pretty healthy all year.

People forget they were one of the 3 worst offenses in the NHL last year.

Sounds like us last year :p

minus the healthy and worst offense part

no reason to hate though, all it takes to win a cup is a hot run nowadays

the only part of larsson being sent down that would give me hopes is looking at what it did for MDZ and OEL. kid needs to be playing soon somewhere.

Last night the Kings played a carbon copy game of last regular season too. They had a few 1-0 wins if I remember right last year. They didn't succeed though last night.

that feel when ur like veruca salt when she wants an oompa loompa.....thats me. i want both larsson to get back in, and parise to be replaced/semi replaced already. build chemistry, be ready and synched for the playoffs.

Well LA had a coaching change mid season last year and adjusting takes long.

Also LA has the same philosophy on winning as the Devils did a while ago: either win more games in the regular season with talented forwards and risk not going far in the playoffs, or win less games in the regular season but always get into the playoffs and go far. So that explains their offense.

Lou actually instructed Lombardi about being a GM a while ago.

Keep in mind Larsson already has a half season of AHL under his belt this year. His sitting is prob more frustrating for fans then it is for him.

People on HFBoards really undervalue 2+ round draft picks - and in the same vein, over value the first rounders.

Look at historical trades with some comparable players to see what a potential looks like.

That trade sounds good to me. Not sure how Caps fans feel. They seem to value Brouwer pretty high (based on the Merrill or 1st round pick).

Over payed third liner for future top two defense man: No way.

A 1st rounder is all right but its obvious we can't give that up.

Urbom is closer to making an impact, and he is young, so from a Washington POV, it makes sense.

To be honest with you, it's not the Devils who turn that down, but the Caps. Why would they want Merril? He's a complete unknown, for a proven NHLer?

Trades don't usually happen like that.

If I'm trading Merrill, I'm adding something else and going for a bigger fish. I'm also not high on Perreault. Wouldn't trade Urbom for him.

Brouwer is a decent player, but he doesn't give us anything Clarkie doesn't already have. He'd be filler at best, like Ponikarovsky+.

I would dangle one of Fayne/Merrill as trade bait knowing that we'll still have the other. For Fayne, I want for a young, established blue chip top-6er. I'm talking players the caliber of Grabner, Setoguchi, Stepan, Johansson, etc. Not necessarily them specifically, just that type of proven young talent.

For Merrill, his value against NHL players is a bit blurry, so he'd probably be best used as a sweetener in a package deal. Though with our lack of star-quality prospects outside of him, and our inability to trade draft picks, AND our only other moveable assets being other defensemen....it would be very difficult for us to make up a package that other teams would find appetizing.
