Similarly, my sister was supposed to be driving through that so finding out she had arrived eventually at her home was a great relief. Condolences to the family and friends of the person who died in the accident.

Yes, 64 year old man from Elba, RIP.

On a side note, I texted my friend at 7 am Wednesday morning. She didn't know her son had been in an accident yet. He didn't tell her, just requested some anti inflammates. Mind you, he's 27 and doesn't live at home..... But, he's okay, and is somewhat a celebrity in Rochester as he was on the news there also.

Buffalo the top hockey market???? Not even top 3

First and foremost this is a Canadian tournament. Americans who care are generally extremely hardcore hockey fans. There’s not a lot. Think about if there was a U20s soccer game or basketball game. How many Americans do you really expect to pay pro level prices to see that? . Plus this region has had the world juniors like what 3 times? Toronto just last year and Buffalo six years ago.

I also think there's an element of people just getting bored with the tournament. I think the novelty/excitement wears off when 3 of the last 4 tournaments have been held (at least partially) in either Buffalo or Toronto. Buffalo also hosted in 2011.

Absolutely agree with this. Last time it was well received by local Hipsters - not so much this time.

Throw in the weather factor and you see the result.

Hopefully the semi finals and final are better attended.

Don't understand why they went back to Buffalo in the first place. IIRC, they were up against Pittsburgh and Tampa, so given the success of the 2011 tournament, I can understand the desire to go back.

IMO, somewhere like Minneapolis/Duluth would have made a better host, given their passion for college hockey. Play the group games at Mariucci and Amsoil Arenas and then move the medal round to either Target Center or Xcel Energy Center.

It's actually amazing how many things have actually worked against the tournament this year. We already have 45 pages of discussion on the topic in the poor attendance thread and yet people still keep listing new issues that in some shape or form have stopped people from showing up.

I'm hoping the tournament next year (in my home town) gets us back on track. Most of us that are diehard WJC fans know how good the product is and my guess is that 17-19 year old hockey players in the future won't be any less entertaining to watch!

If they wanted to make this tournament competitive and limit the blow outs would be go the route of what they do at the Women's World Championship. Have the top 5 teams in one group, the next 5 in the other. The top 4 teams from the A group advance to the medal round and the top 2 from the B group. The top 2 teams from the A group would get a bye to the semi-finals.

Now doing this would go back to 6 teams making the medal round as opposed to what it is now with eight. I know its artificially making it more competitive by not having Canada, USA, Russia etc beating up on some of the lesser teams but could make it more watchable overall. What do you think?

I actually like that idea

Nielsen & RSN rating would disagree with this assessment. Buffalo has been near the top for years.

To be fair, he said NEAR the top. But yeah, Minnesota is still king as this current USA roster has shown.

Not talking about source of talent - he questioned Buffalo being a "Top Hockey Market" - which it is. The NHL knows this. TV advertisers know this. You can Google TV ratings for the last many years and as awful as the Sabres have been, we still watch hockey regardless of whether the Sabres are any good or not. Take this last Stanley Cup Series for instance -

2017 STANLEY CUP FINAL IS MOST-WATCHED FINAL ON RECORD WITHOUT AN ORIGINAL SIX TEAM

Buffalo fans also might just want to forget about hockey for awhile. The Sabres performance has undoubtedly soured a decent portion of western NY hockey fans, and it's not like some short tournament does anything to help rejuvenate any lost interest in hockey.
Yes and no. I've gone to more of the tournament games than Sabres games this year. This tournament is my one chance to watch some exciting hockey, so I'd rather pay $10 to watch a tournament game than $10 to watch a Sabres game. I know I'm probably the minority though.

Yeah, I mean they only have the highest TV ratings for NHL games in any US market and were #3 for ratings of the Stanley Cup Final last year (obviously behind PIT and NSH) despite the team being terrible, but yeah they're not a top-3 market just because high prices, terrible weather, the Bills making the playoffs and general overkill of a JUNIOR hockey tournament has led to low attendance.

Guessing you've never even been to Buffalo, but whatever helps you sleep at night, bud!

The ticket prices are really like $10 per game? Seems pretty cheap to me, it's cheaper than having a dinner and a couple of beers in a not-so-high class restaurant in my home city, which is by no means one of of the most expensive cities in the world. When I go out and drink a few shots of whiskey with friends, I pay more too. Don't understand any hockey fan complaining about the prices, if they really are like this.

Well, the games I went to weren't the expensive ones. I spent about $10/ticket to watch Finland vs Denmark. Sweden vs Czech Republic was like $15/ticket. I also used some weird third party website to buy them, and both games were on a weekday afternoon. Most of the games are too expensive, especially if they involve USA or Canada. I just went to the cheap ones.

I was going to brave the snow and go see Sweden vs USA today but I can't justify shelling out the money today because I also want to go to some games tomorrow.

I would happily cancel some three drinking evenings to see such game. :) Perhaps this is because we don't have international hockey events so often around here. When I was at the 2015 men's WCH in Prague, it was massive, the atmosphere surrounding it, frenetic crowds not only inside and around the arena, but everywhere on the streets nearby. Really amazing event, but this was the only one for quite a long time.

At least let's hope the few thousands who show up today bring some kind of atmosphere to the games.

Nobody cares about that game and for good reason. Now let's see if some fans actually show up for the big games.
