Not Ottawa.

I can't even imagine the excuses we would hear.
Ottawa had the 2009 tournament and had far better attendance than Toronto and Montreal did the past two times they hosted. Every single game had an attendance of 93% plus at the now CTC. lol over 18 000 people went to the Kazakhstan vs Germany game. Honestly one of the most successful wjc tournaments ever if not THE MOST.

Oh I remember...fondly in fact...those days (and fans) are long gone...

Non-elimination games involving foreign teams should basically be free. Get people to check out the game, provide a decent atmosphere for TV and the fans watching from foreign countries. I guess in this tournament I'd consider both the US and Canada to be domestic given the location of Buffalo.

lol you're being pretty tough on Ottawa. I don't think the WJC should go to NHL cities like Ottawa, but that said there's a lot of things going on in Ottawa. People don't like the Sens owner, and many people in Ottawa are still Leafs fans or Habs fans. But those factors shouldn't affect Team Canada like it does the Sens. The crappy location of the arena is still a factor though.

For the Toronto WJC, the games were stupidly priced.

The tickets shouldn't be that much, not like you're paying the athletes. For a person you pay for the ticket, you pay expensive concession prices, and then transport/parking. One HF poster years ago was an awesome person and gave me Sweden/Swiss game tickets for free (I got to see Nylander live for Sweden yay) and I still put out $50 that day for my (at the time) girlfriend and myself.

The games here in Buffalo are likewise stupidly priced! Too many expensive packages!
I feel the IIHF looks at what the Leafs can charge then comes up with an absurd number for a junior tournament for anything within driving distance of Toronto without realizing the dynamics that make Leaf tickets crazy expensive (sold to corporate groups, if you give up your seasons you'll never get them again, and the prestige around having tickets).

The other issue is, it is just not as big a deal in an NHL city. I expect very similar issues with Vancouver and Victoria next year.

Try this tournament in London.

We'll sell out any Canada game and most USA games.

I feel like they'll get a better attendance... Mainly because the tournament hasnt been hosted on the west coast since 2006 and out west at all since Calgary and Edmonton in 2012. Compared to to the Toronto area which has hosted 4 times since 2011 if you count both times Buffalo hosted since it helps to saturate the demand for the tournament in that region.

You'd have to split it with someone. You don't have the secondary arena that is up to international standards (I lived in London and went to UWO), and I doubt Windsor or Kitchener (the obvious 2nd cities to co-host with) would do that well without getting the Canada group.

While annoying for the fans, it is not about selling it out, it is about maximizing revenue. I'm pretty sure the event made good money in Toronto, because they were charging ridiculous prices for games. Scalpers bought packages expecting to lose money on non-Group Canada games, but hoped to make enough of a profit back from Canada being in the Semis and Gold medal games.

This was also the time of the "Drive for 5." Successful tournament yes. But also a spectacular run and gravy for both Hockey Canada and junior hockey.

At the time Ottawa set the WJHC attendance record if I'm not mistaken, a record it possibly still owns .

Holy crap, not a single game has cracked 10K? WTF is going on? Each game has had about half the people that showed up in 2011.

At least the outdoor game will bail out the average, haha.

Vancouver sold out back in 2006. Calgary did too when they hosted years later. It was only the Montreal crowd that thought the tournament was beneath them.
