I was very disappointing seeing pictures of the crowd yesterday, but this should've been expected. There are a lot of different reasons that all together add up to why attendance was so poor yesterday. In no particular order:

-It was the day after Christmas, a lot of people are back at work already
-It was -15 degrees C outside
-The U.S. was playing Denmark... everyone is waiting for the big outdoor event vs Canada on Friday, the clear main draw of the tournament for U.S. fans
-Ticket prices were WAY overpriced
-The Sabres have literally killed all hockey buzz in this town
-Junior hockey is just not covered in the U.S. I couldn't find highlights anywhere on TV, had to go online/Twitter to find highlights
Good post. Hockey is losing fans in a lot of areas even in Canada because the cost of even house league hockey is prohibiting to a lot of families. Equipment is ridiculous and the sign up cost are too high. Your probably looking at 1000 bucks by the time you sign a kid up for house league and buy the equipment and soccer probably cost fifty bucks plus a pair of soccer boots.

Toronto is not a hockey city like Ottawa is. Its pretty much leafs or bust. I moved to toronto a few years back and lived in ottawa during the 2009 tournament. The hype around and in Ottawa was really solid and it was just a celebration of the game no matter who you cheered for. In Toronto its leafs or nothing. Even a lot of people in my age group (20's) care more about the raptors than they do the leafs or hockey. Leafs still run the sports market in toronto but man in the early 2000's it was something else here
Lmao, the tickets sold very well when the tournament was held in Toronto. The tournament is in Buffalo this year, sheesh I now expect you state on the other hand Buffalo is a great hockey market.

There are a handful of factors:

1. Overpriced
2. Weather
3. Buffalo has prospect fatigue. We've been sold on the franchise turning around from these wonderkids for 6-7 years now. Only Eichel has really turned out as expected.
4. The Canadian team is the most lackluster roster... ever?
5. Current political climate in the US. There are probably a lot of Canadians who aren't in a rush to head to the US right now.

It's a perfect storm for this thing to go poorly.

Came here to post nearly exactly this.
The weather is absolutely awful in Buffalo right now (worse than normal).
Ticket prices are a joke this year, which we seem to be getting everywhere now for sports or concerts.
The Sabres suck and have few if any prospects playing.
The Bills are in the hunt and Buffalo can only focus on one team/sport at a time.
The Canadian team isn't the favorite.
The Canadian dollar isn't worth much.

You do realize that this tournament has been in this general area 4 times since 2011 now right? This has nothing to do with the interest in the tournament itself dropping and more so just them over saturating the southern Ontario market in the last decade. They need to get and stay far away from it for like a decade after this year.

I dont understand why saturation of the market would be such an issue. If you are interested in the tournament you wouldnt get bored even if it happened year after year.

This really is the main issue IMO. Well that and if there are truly road bans. The fact that Canadians didn't go down is odd. Dollar has been about the same past few years now, so that shouldn't be a major factor.

The real problem is you start out pricing anything and people look elsewhere. Sure it might only be a short term issue, but for this tourney it seems like this has been an issue for years with pricing. Eventually people find something else to do.

When you add saturation of the market along with charging NHL prices for a junior product it is not something that you are going to get families shelling out money for multiple years in a row. You don't have to like or understand these reasons but it doesn't make them untrue. They need to be much smarter about where they put this tournament in the future and as I said earlier them putting this in Buffalo and not another USA city was a pure and simple money grab from day 1.

Well that's not true. Mittlestadt and Nylander could both be favorites for tournament MVP.

While NHL prices are probably unreasonable, i still believe if the WJC had retained its initial hype and prestige, people would be willing to shell out a bit extra to see the next NHL stars in the making. Especially in Canada, arent you guys supposed to have hockey as a religion?

Hockey is obviously the most popular sport....that doesn't mean there isn't a tipping point when it comes to price gauging that happens with this tournament now. The popularity of this tournament came from the support Canada got in the CHL towns. The Halifax's,Saskatoon's and London's of Canada. I think they have gotten way to far away from where the tournament came from and have full on gone to a profit driven agenda when it is in North America....and when something starts to feel less genuine people are going to notice. In 05 and 11 when Canadians came down and took over the arena's in North Dakota and Buffalo it wasn't planned and it wasn't the reason the tournaments were put in those places....it was natural. This year they specifically put the tournament in Buffalo to mooch off of Canadians and it is easy to see through.
Edit: It is far to narrow minded to just say that because hockey is popular in Canada any hockey event should be popular as well. We should have standards and if it isn't good enough the organizers know.

I haven't read much of the thread, but why not try a different area of the US? Wisconsin, North Dakota again, Minneapolis, Seattle for example? I think Grand Forks was super successful last time was it not? Not sure why they would go to Buffalo again, especially after it was just in the area last year in Toronto and they didnt sell out there and Montreal. Correct me if Im wrong but I remember more Canadians driving down to Buffalo last time around? Or maybe Im just remembering the playoff games. I think the ticket prices may be the biggest culprit, but I would certainly go to a lot of games if it were held in Winnipeg.

Over 11 million watched the gold medal game last year, so that’s about 1 in 4 Canadians tuning in, I’d say it outdraws any Canadian religious event, so ....

Fair enough. But then wouldnt it follow that stands should be full aswell? Even if prices are a bit much.

Last time I checked Buffalo is in the U S A. At least an hours drive and border delays. Plus as was mentioned Canadian dollar is about 20% less than the U S dollar. So add that to the already ridiculous ticket price.
So yeah ticket price plus 20% plus a tank of gas round trip. Plus international border, equals too expensive. That being said I believe the Canada Finland game outdrew the U S game. If you think it was Americans attending the Canadian game, 90% of the crowd was wearing Canadian hockey sweaters the other 10% were probably Canadians as well. They just didn’t have sweaters, cheap mothers

Oh was thinking of the previous WJC in Toronto, which also was shit-show, attendence wise.

It comes down to pricing. It seems like the tournament has become a bi-annual opportunity to gouge the ever living f*** out of Canadian hockey fans, either by hosting it in Canada or somewhere close enough (Buffalo or North Dakota) to sponge off those who can travel to it. Demand at the prices set is just not there.

maybe im off here but could people maybe getting tired of it since its every year?

People in this area of Canada have gotten tired of being price gauged. If they want to try and rip people off the should probably know better then to try and do it to the same group of people like 3 times in 4 years lol

Tickets are expensive and the drive to the rink in horrible snow conditions means not much of a walk up crowd. Plus the Canadian team has no one who stands out as the face of that team---no one eligible to be drafted and no big Toronto or Buffalo prospects on that team. Playing some of the preliminary games in Rochester or Syracuse may have been considered....

I don’t see why ticket sales should be a problem in Vancouver and Victoria. There will be a high demand after a very long time. It should be great there.
Hasn't Vancouver had trouble selling out Canucks playoff games recently?
