Kyle Dubas is on the last year of his contract, it seems the Leafs are waiting to see if the team performs in the playoffs to determine whether they should extend him or not.

I'm of the notion that Kyle Dubas can't control how the team performs, he can only assemble a team that can or should win. With that said, I think aside from overpaying on the Marner/Matthews extension, he's made great moves. Replaced Hyman by signing Bunting, saving 4.5M+ a year on Hyman. Walked from Campbell/traded Mrazek, replaced with Samsonov/Murray. Traded for Giordano/Muzzin, Jarnkrok+Kampf signings look good so far.

What are your thoughts?

If you had to make the decision on Kyle Dubas right now (before the playoffs), would you extend him or let him walk?

I ask right now because Kyle Dubas has no impact on if the Leafs beat (most likely) Tampa or not, he assembled his team and the rest is on Keefe/the team. If the team he assembled is strong enough, that's all he can do.

Hindsight is 20/20 and whether this team succeeds or fails in the playoffs is not in Dubas' control after the trade deadline. So, the real question is do you think this team is good enough to compete?

Thoughts?

Ive been quite critical of him and the Murray trade was horrendous but he won me over with ROR and Accarai trade. It's not that I'm a Dubas fan but I fear the alternative would be worse and now that he's been through the ringer he's not as likely to repeat the mistakes he made early on his career. I'm not committing to him long term but I would keep it going for another year or two and just see how it plays out.

I don't want to decide now, so I won't.

The problem with that notion is people have revisionist history.

People will say the team is good enough and then if they lose, turn around and say I knew the team wasn't good enough! Fire him! An example of this is the Foligno trade, a lot of media (and this board) said it was absolutely the right decision and the Leafs needed to go for it. Now, they turn around and blame Dubas for it saying it was a horrible trade.

When you realize that the GM cannot change the team (much) after the trade deadline other than bringing up prospects, you have to ask yourself would you change anything else or not?

Basing a GM's contract on the basis of hindsight is irrational.

Extend in a heart beat. His good outweighs the few bad decisions that he has made

I do not have faith in Dubas' ability to put a winning team together; Obviously happy to be proven wrong but..... Also with Matthews, Nylander coming up as UFAs after next season with NTCs/NMCs starting July 1, 2023 for all 3 of matthews, marner, nylander.... I am concerned what dubas will do to this team.

If Leafs win the cup: Extend him or let him walk don't care
If Leafs make the ECF/SCF: Extension should not be more than 3 yrs
If Leafs make 2nd round but fail to advance: Extension should be conditional on dumping Keefe (3 yr contract only)
If Leafs lose in the 1st round: its good bye Dubas. If Leafs extend him even after losing in 1st round; I may stop watching the Leafs altogether. Rewarding failure is something I will not support anymore

Extend based on the fact that for the first time I can remember (I have been following at least parts of 6 decades), the team seems to have a solid system in place top to bottom through multiple leagues, is developing players well, drafting very well, finding some gems by other routes too. He has misses too but seems to immediately jettison those even with cost rather than stay trying to plug a square peg in a round hole. What I like about what he has done is it sets us up to have a legitimate shot for many years, which is necessary because a lot of luck goes into winning a Cup.

Hopefully they get the monkey off their back soon.

It's funny that this thread came up. I was just thinking about Dubas and the Leafs. I agree with Divine. I think Dubas has put together a team that can win it all. Whether they win or not, that's to be seen, but I think that falls more on the coach at this time. Unless you guys have some serious injuries, anything less than the ECF and Keefe is probably gone, but I think Dubas stays.

If this core fails again, than it’s still on Dubas. He has stood firm this is the group to win, and maybe he’s been wrong all along. Still think signing Tavares is the move that set this team back. If they make the ECF than give him a short extension and see what happens, anything less he should be gone with Shanny

I'd argue that Dubas has influence because the coach installed and players assembled/contracts signed are of his doing. As such, success or failure should partly be attributed to him. That aside, this is still about having at least some playoff success, or a continued lack thereof. In the event of no contract extension, there is an obvious risk associated with the former happening. Conversely, extending now might seem ridiculous if one wishes to fire him based on the latter occurring.

Per the poll options, I'd leave him in the position of being able to walk away.

Check back once we know the results of this years playoffs

He's constructed a phenomenal roster, they are playing phenomenal team hockey, top 10 in all metrics. If this group doesn't get out of the 1st round it's 100% on the players. Anything short of the ECF is a failure for me, but the East is so stupidly stacked any of the top 6 teams can win the cup.

My prediction is Leafs vs Carolina ECF. Winner takes the cup.

NHL GM's are average at best. That's the problem. He likely is getting extended if Shanny is staying.
