For free i dont really care. Would have been pretty irked if Dubas let POJ walk only to pay value for him 5 months later.

I imagine the Pens will end up sending him down in a couple weeks and St. Louis probably claims him again.

P.O. is back because the Penguins are decimated at defense at all levels.

The Baby Pens have struggled lately because of the mounting defensive injuries, so the Pens can send Clurman back down.

PO knows the system, so there is no acclimation period.

There could be more in the works, too. Tony Androckitis, who covers the AHL, said Boris Katchouk - who has played well at center for WBS - was a surprise scratch tonight. He could be the future considerations since he's not signed to an NHL deal.

EDIT: Also, this makes the pairings a bit more palatable for a while, because POJ and Letang have history.

The funny thing is, this way, Joseph actually costs them less than if they'd retained him "for free", since his cap hit is now pro-rated, and the only thing they're giving up is "future considerations".

As an amusing side note, this is the second time in five months that the Pens have traded future considerations to the Blues (previous time was for Hayes). I'm pretty sure those considerations were satisfied when the Pens traded draft picks with them later to allow the Blues to get their own second round pick back in order to be able to issue an offer sheet.

You’re right the cost is nigh inconsequential , it’s just like why not have held on to him in the first place? This team just loves reaquiring players they don’t actually want and I don’t get it: Kapanen, Hallander, POJ.

I guess it’s less even that we are paying anything it’s just like why bring back a player coaching staff did not like in the first place?

It was either because his Qualifying Offer was too high, or, as @DesertPenguin said, they were worried about arbitration. I forget which it was. DesertPenguin is probably correct.

Pettersson is hurt and every other available defenseman in the Pens org is worse than POJ. They basically just got a free(ish) fill-in guy before the roster freeze.

I like POJ. I didn't want to see him leave, though, I understand the concern about arbitration.

He had a promising rookie year. 21 points in 75 games +8. Pretty good underlying stats, 53% xGF, 57% actual GF%.

Last season he was in and out of the lineup due to injury and Sullivan and for a good portion of that, he was paired with Ruhwedel. Judging by the TOI, it looks like March 22 when he was paired with Letang. Form that point on, he had 6 points in 14 games and was a +7. He's not going to anchor a pairing with anyone you put on there with him (Ruhwedel/Shea/Ludvig/etc.), but if you put him with other competent players (Letang/Rutta), the results seem pretty good to me.

He's still relatively young at 25. Former 1st rounder. Cheap. Fans already soured on from his time here, but if he was an unknown to Penguin fans, I think this trade would receive more praise.

Yup I was always a POJ fan.
Would never be a top pairing guy, but a 2nd pairing player is nothing to sneeze at.

Personally, I'd like to have fewer low-percentage positional guys on the roster, but my opinion doesn't shape anything. It's just amazing that we keep coming back to ex-Pens for whatever reasons.

It's comfortable, predicable, and you know what you are getting. Easy to slot him back as he knows the system. Also considering the only reason we got rid of him was the cap.
