We put a couple of support pillars under it to carry the load, it's all good.

Keep your head up kid!

Reminds me of the field next to my house growing up where we played pickup baseball and football. It had a fire hydrant right in short left field, which was about 2/3rds of the way when we played football. Rarely ever came into play in baseball, but it was used often and effectively by receivers on pick plays.

One thing I’m waiting to here about that was talking about when TD bought the team is the new practice facility.

I had no idea this was already being built.

Kinda makes you realize just how dedicated Dundon is to making this team work here in this city.

Very curious to see what happens with the new tax dollars being allocated to the PNC Arena, given the renovation proposal last year. I know part of that was a hope to get construction started in 2020, so... this could be the push to make it happen.

yeah, wake competition center was getting built as a dual sheet rink regardless of dundon. he may have invested some additional money on top of what was originally planned for the pro sports fitness center and improvements to the rinks themselves to make it a better practice facility, but not sure on that.

Following that link got me down a rabbit hole

Washington is debuting a new scoreboard this year as well.

On top of that, both Chicago and Philly are updating as well, but theirs will include screens that can move to add an additional element

Likely nicer. I read somewhere the Flyers new jumbotron was costing $14 million. I believe ours is only costing $4.5 million? That said I'm excited for the new scoreboard, but ours will likely age quicker vs the others.

Eh, that Chicago one just looks stupid to me (I like how those hanging boards block part of the ice with an angle from the upper deck). They're just too tall. I want a decent board for replays, but when I'm watching the game, I also want the option to not see the jumbotron shoved in my face- the whole point of going to a game is to actually watch the players actually do the things on the ice.

Bigger isn't always better. Let people see the game, and don't shove Comcast ads in their faces constantly.

The Philly and Chicago ones have moving parts that activate after goals or during stoppages in play. Not going to lie, they do look really nice. But outside of the moving parts, it's not like they're really any nicer than the one we are putting in. Plus, with the smoke effects we put in last year, and some of the on ice effects we implemented, we are more than holding our own.

I guess I just don't see the appeal. Moving boards just to show more animated clapping hands or "make some noise"? I just don't give a crap. Show me replays and make it easy to find the time left, penalties, and shots on goal. Seems more to me like they're buying an expensive thing just to buy an expensive thing. Well, and shove more aggressive ads down everyone's throat.

I have a feeling this is how they'll be used, which is a shame because there's a lot of potential in the concept of a moving scoreboard. But it's almost certainly going to be a case of "ooh fancy, they have a moving noise meter!"

I think the biggest benefit would be that they might be able to have different arrangements for different events in the arena. Like, they might be able to have it set up differently for an NBA game than they would for hockey. I know the Wells Fargo Center also expands outward (the image above is already expanded) to make it wider, but could also shrink it for NBA games on the smaller court.

But outside of that, yeah. Definitely seems gimmicky to me. And if they are using it for goal celebrations and the like, its not like anyone really pays attention to the scoreboard in the immediate aftermath of a goal.

Yeah and I can see how it could potentially be very cool for concerts too.

Basically this is mostly about NHL game presentation being too corny to use the best tools effectively.
