Playoffs Positivity Thread

Calgary are going to get dangerously close to our record for most points without making the playoffs. They'll tie it if they go 3-0 and miss. For everyone cheering for the wild to fall out, it's far more like Calgary passes St. Louis. But Calgary's destiny is in their own hands. St. Louis and Minny only have 1 game left. If they don't win Calgary passes either of them if they 3-0. Minny only needs a loser point to clinch, as their RW is out of reach of Calgary for the tiebreaker. I guess St. Louis holds the secondary tie breaker so Calgary can't really tie them either. Minny and St. Louis both have bottom 5 west teams as their final game though.

I'm almost cheering for Calgary even though it would push our pick back. Vancouver being the only Canadian team out of the playoffs would be hilarious since they thought they were contenders going into this season.

CBJ played in their last 3 games
-Washington : AHL goalie
-Buffalo :Backup goalie
-Sens : Backup goalie

That helped keeping them alive for sure
Probably the Caps don't want to face us. They already locked down home ice against everyone except Winnipeg and potentially Vegas. Columbus are better than they get credit for but their train is being pulled by their guys playing their hearts out for Gaudreau. I don't think they have another gear to hit, they're already full throttle. They'll be better next year with the continued development of Johnson/Fantilli but the vets are definitely going to take a step back.

They don't have a Demidov unknown factor and none of their forwards are as good as Nick Suzuki. I'd say even Cole is better than their entire forward group at their current stage of development. Their goaltending is subpar too. They're probably a much easier matchup for Washington. Today will be their sixth game against Columbus too so I'm assuming they've got a better handle on scouting Columbus' system.

Or maybe they're just taking a breather after going bananas to get Ovi the record. Everyone's resting up and going through the motions until game 1. They whooped us in the regular season in two of three games.

Sens definitely are petty enough to try and keep us out of the playoffs to try and get Quebec fans to cheer for them.

Buffalo don't even have a starter but Reimer's been their "good" goalie the past month and was coming off a seven game win streak. He's been the starter since March.

I must be on drugs because I can't figure out the math lol ...

How are the Red Wings not eliminated on NHL.com? This despite the standings being up to date as of 8 am this morning.

Well, there's a couple of important games today.

6 PM: Columbus @ Washington - You would think with the farce that yesterday's game ended up being for Washington that the Caps play at least a competitive game today. They were dummied yesterday.

It doesn't help them that Logan Thompson is injured & Charlie Lindgren is a below average goalie. He's been Primeau-like in his last 5 games in particular. He has a .867 save percentage over his last 5 starts. In 37 starts, he only has 15 games where he had a .900 save percentage or higher. At that rate, he's going to be riding the buses in AHL again.

The Caps great season is largely due to goaltending, PP & offense. They're defensive metrics aren't that great. They're playing at home though and have a top home record, while Columbus's road record is trash. Great 8 was rested yesterday. He probably plays today.

Results: If Columbus loses in any manner, they're eliminated. If Columbus wins in any manner, Montreal needs 2 points to clinch.

8 PM: Sharks @ Flames - Sharks have been giving teams tough games lately. They're having fun, while the playoff clinching teams are more stressed. Still, I expect Calgary to win this one. It's a home game.

If Calgary does win, then it's going to come down to the final game of the season for both Minnesota & St. Louis to clinch. Both teams final games are at home.

Results: Regardless of anything else, Minnesota is one point from clinching. If Calgary loses in any manner, Minnesota clinches. An OT/SO loss for Calgary means Blues are one point from clinching.

If Calgary wins in regulation then St. Louis needs to win in regulation to clinch on Tuesday. They play Utah. If Calgary wins in OT/SO then winning in any manner clinches for St. Louis.

If Calgary loses in regulation then both Minnesota & St. Louis clinch.

Oops Small mistake here. If CBJ lose in OT they are eliminated.

I think it's still not quite correct. If CBJ wins in OT then we need only 1 pt.
No, any loss by Cbus and they're done.

If they lose in OT, they can tie the Habs in points and regulation wins, assuming those games are in regulation, but they lose the 3rd tie breaker, which is regulation/ot wins.

If Montreal gets another ot/so loss point AND Columbus wins all 3 games, but one is in ot/so the Habs make it.

Columbus wins tie breaker if all 3 wins are in regulation. Is that it?
(They’d pull the goalie to avoid a tie?)

I was talking about an OT Win by CBJ not an OT loss.
If CBJ wins in OT then we would need 1 pt instead of 2.

If St-Louis wins their last game in regulation, they clinch. Like you said, Minny only needs 1 point to clinch. Calgary needs to win all 3 games.

Like Columbus, they're on the edge of the precipice and have somewhere around 98-99% chance of not making it. They lose a single game and they're out.

Oh, forgot to mention, while their next game is versus the Sharks and have won all 3 previous games by a tight score, they go on to face the Knights and have lossed all 3 games by a wide margin. They are 2 GF 11 GA vs Vegas this season.

Honestly all we need is a win against Chicago and it’s done.

It's a great test and learning opportunity for this group.

They did what they had to do to have full control of their destiny.

Now they have to win, at home, as the favorite, with the pressure ramped up.

Whatever the outcome, our core will be better from the experience.

I like our odds.

Get er done boys!

Positive mindset- Caps avenge the humiliation from yesterday
Hopefully. I get the feeling Marty won't play Demidov if he aren't clinched or if there's a risk for Columbus catching us. Or at the very least he'll be fourth line buried.

Marty always tends to play his vets more when we're in the mix and changes things up when we're bad. Like Hutson moved to PP1 when we were pretty far down in the standings.

I want to see big minute Demidov from the beginning.

Both their G have 8GP total playoff experience between them, wouldn’t call that an advantage TBH
It's not, I like our chances for an upset. Demidov will inject some life into the lineup like how Caufield did during the COVID year and could very well have an even bigger impact. Hope we clinch so we can freely play him a ton in these last two games.

And rest a few who are clearly hurt, Armia, Anderson for starters
