2024 2025 Around the League Part 2

Still want to know what happened here..

BUffalo and Mitts tricked us into this trade. :D We gave up a useful piece and got, basically nothing in return.

Bad enough we gave him 3 years for over 5 mill. Good thing, it was only 3 years. So someone in management had a clue or providence.

We had to overpay Boston for sending us Coyle, who has been a very good trade for us so far, and taking Mitts of our hands.

Thats what happened. We got blinded like Calgary got when they traded for Huberdeau, gave him this nightmare-deal and now are stuck with this conctract for a long time.....

Don’t you think the Avs bear some responsibility for the Mitts trade with Buffalo? We all get enamored with the latest and greatest acquisition to fill the team’s most dire need but if the player doesn’t immediately excel in their play then we’re harsh critics of the player. However, in Mitts’ case, the criticism was deserved. The Avs knew of Mitts’ inconsistent scoring history and still went ahead with the trade. In fairness, no one could foresee Mitts’ catastrophic implosion as a player.

I think from the Avs perspective, they looked at it as a trade of inconsistent players. Byram was anything but a consistent top 4 defender for us and I think Sleepy CMac took a wager on the inconsistent 2C since that was a position of need for us. At the end of the day, it didn't really work for us but at least CMac turned around and got someone that looks great in his role as 3C.

At the end of the day, however, results are what matters and anything shy of a cup is a failure for this squad.

Comparing some traded centers from that deadline:

Kuznetsov 20 games 7 points, playoffs 10 games 6 points
Wennberg 19 games 5 points, playoffs 16 games 2 points
Henrique 22 games 9 points, playoffs 17 games 7 points
Mittelstadt 18 games 10 points, playoffs 11 games 9 points

Maybe he was the best center available?

Some trades from January and February:
Monahan 34 games 24 points, playoffs 5 games 1 point
Lindholm 26 games 12 points, playoffs 13 games 10 points

Both went for 1st + 3 or 4 rounder + prospects.

Does Byram hold enough value to beat those offers? Because he's fast-tracking to UFA I don't think he's that attractive to rebuilding teams. If Lindholm or Monahan had NTC they could also block the Avs. I would take these guys over Mitts even though points wise there wasn't much difference.

I think it was the right decision to trade for a center. Mitts was good enough that we didn't lose in playoffs due to lack of a 2C. What really should have been done is address the issue in summer 2023. Iirc they did at least try to move Byram back then.

Please let Calgary knock out St Louis. Imagine this game 82 Calgary wins and they're in, Kadri scores in OT to **** the Blues again.

I was talking to my wife about this scenario this morning. She, of course, didn't give 2 f***s about it but mentioned that she has never seen such joy in my eyes on a Monday morning when I pictured the scenario of the Flames knocking out the Blues.

The Avs deserve 100% of the blame. Incredibly poor identification of a player with regard to fit. You champion wanting to play fast paced hockey and got one of the worst skaters in the league, a guy who probably would be average in the AHL.

Thankfully they fixed their mistake but it wasn't without a heavy price.

Blues in danger of peaking too early. Even if the Blues win their final game in OT/SO, if the Flames win their games in regulation they'll knock the Blues out.

I'm not going to deny CTE. In fact, the NHL probably needs to acknowledge it sooner than later lest they face a bad lawsuit like the NFL did.

However, Rick Westhead only seems to pop up when something negative is happening in hockey lol. Has he ever written a positive story?

I mean he specifically focuses on writing about legal battles and controversies surrounding sports (it actually says this on his TSN bio). And those are rarely positive.

The thing with Simon is he also had severe alcohol and drug issues (he already had alcohol issues as a teenager with the Nordiques). Hard to prove that the headaches, anxiety and memory loss come from CTE.

Demidov debut tonight. 3rd line with Newhook and Armia.

Laine buried on the 4th line lol

It will be very interesting to see what becomes of Laine and his NA career. A PP weapon like him is always going to have demand around the league, but what is that going to be worth for teams? 8.7M for a #1PP superweapon, but bottom-6 5v5 player is just not going to happen again. What is his worth?

Yep, Walker appears to have confirmed that the PR folks got him to calm down a bit. But I guess he ain't the only person who's been royally pissed about the way the Blueshirts are going about their business.

This just looks like a level of incompetence even the worst-run NHL organizations rarely attain, and that's saying something. I just can't tell if this is the result of a totally inexperienced GM in over his head, or an overtly dumb, meddlesome owner mandating some rough, haphazard treatment of his very expensive roster. Likely both.

The NHL version of the designated hitter.
he’s just not good enough at what he does to fit anywhere into a contending teams lineup unless he’s going to take a massive pay cut.

I think ultimately, there’s nothing to keep them accountable.

The Rangers have unlimited spending if necessary.
Players still want to sign there.
And fans keep showing up.
