Smell like tanking season is starting. GMs are accessing their chances, their line-up health...and deciding no this year.
Bring it on.
Our depth will be getting tested in the weeks to come it could have an adverse effect given how Heineman was performing on a nightly basis.
It will be interesting to see how and if we can adjust.

I was looking at our record so far this season and our pace and i think the Habs end the season with 92 pts. Last season Washington earned the WC2 spot with 91 pts.

Desired results tonight:

- MTL win vs. UTA

- PIT reg. loss to SEA:
PIT reg. loss + MTL win = MTL move 2 pts up on PIT with 3 games in hand.
- DET reg. loss to SJS: DET reg. loss + MTL win = MTL move 2 pts up on DET.
- NYR reg. loss to COL: NYR reg. loss + MTL win = MTL 4 pts up on NYR.

matches we really need to end in regulation, no matter who wins:
- TBL vs. BOS: BOS reg. loss + MTL win = MTL moves 1 point behind BOS with 3 games in hand. TBL reg. loss + MTL win = MTL move 3 pts behind TBL for 3rd in Atlantic. TBL with 1 game in hand.
- CBJ vs. PHI: CBJ reg. loss + MTL win = MTL tie CBJ at 46 pts, but MTL moves ahead due to having 1 game in hand. PHI reg. loss + MTL win = MTL move 3 pts up on PHI with 2 games in hand.
- OTT vs. NYI: OTT reg. loss + MTL win = MTL moves 1 point ahead of OTT. NYI reg. loss + MTL win = MTL moves 5 pts up on NYI.

*There is a way MTL can end the night in a WC spot. But it will need to be a MTL win + CBJ, DET & OTT regulation losses.*

The team can take advantage of the Heineman injury by giving a shot to some guys in the system who can help now, and if one can stick, then it helps with the deadline (and the standings).

I think the important thing is that we're getting good goaltending and I think the team is in such a great place mentally that this tough schedule has been battled well. I think a big home stand like the one coming, followed by a west coast trip (though idk if the fires will affect that) will keep them in good spirits.

Can't say he would have prevented this, but Cooper scratching Point against a rival that's 2 points below the standings because he missed a meeting when they aren't a lock for the playoffs is quite the decision.

Cooper has been there for over a decade now. He's like a million years old in coaching years for one club.

I didn't hear about this story until now but I wonder if he's also pushing some buttons just to try to keep the ear of the room. Of course, it can backfire too but it can't be easy to command attention and buy in for this long of a time at the same club.

...he pretty much had to...you sit a scrub when shyte like that happens, you sit a star when it does too...

Canadiens record since their 7-5 win vs. Buffalo on November 11th:

17-9-2 for 36 pts out of a possible 56, playing .643 hockey.

We'll see how the rest of the season goes, but this is a 2-month sample, which is a good enough run to be called a trend and not a just a good run of games.

Before that game, they were 5-9-1 in their first 15 games. They were playing .367 hockey

Yup, 15-4-1 since Laine return I believe. Even if we go 11-8 in next 19 makes us 5 games over .500 at trade deadline

One more win and we play .545 with our horrid start. That puts us in the playoffs in most years.

The race in the East is something else. Right now you've got 10 teams fighting for 3 spots.

With the way teams are winning, the division playoff spots might be set in stone yet either. Still lots of games to be played.
Things are crazy. In the East three playoff spots are open. Only one team is likely out.
In the West only one playoff spot is open. Five teams are likely out.

At what point does this become establishing a baseline trend vs hot streak?

There has been 3 different phases to the Habs season so far:
- first 15 games, swimming at the bottom
- November 11th, started to slowly float toward the surface
- December 3rd, added rocket boosters

Adding Carrier and replacing Primeau improved the team defensively even further.
From season start to November 11th: 4.13 GA
From November 11th to December 18th: 3.25 GA
From December 18th to this morning: 2.33 GA

Habs are also #1st this morning in goal for per game since December 15th (8th since November 11th).

Carrier, Laine and Dach waking up shows us more of what this team -is- currently. Newhook following Dach up the trend line would be great. We haven't seen the best of Laine yet, he's basically a stationary cannon right now.
