Kings have only won the division once. All the way back in 1990/91. This is their best chance to do it in awhile. Would be nice.

It's certainly not going to get easier with only 4 divisions, it's a much more difficult than winning the Smythe.

Still can’t get over 2016 when they needed either a win or a loss from Anaheim on the last day to win the division. They proceeded to blow a 3-0 lead to non-playoff Winnipeg while Anaheim won.
Also the end of 2012. We had back to back games against the Sharks. Lost both games in OT.

Had the Kings won both games in regulation or OT, we would have won the division over Phoenix.

Is there any franchise that has as few division titles as LA? Seattle doesn't count. I know AZ only has one, but they're still a fairly new franchise (not counting Winnipeg years)

It’ll suck if the Kings end up not winning the division because of Durzi going brain dead in the last minute of the season opener against Vegas.
Wouldn't it just be hoot if the Kings not only won the division, but the Western Conference?

Dont know the answer, but I can almost guarantee no team has more cups than div titles like LAK.

I always enjoy the fact only the Kings could have more Cups than division victories.
wow - i guess it pays to read back in the thread so you dont post the exact same comment :)

Update: 3/7

Only 9 teams control their own destiny in the western conference, the 9th being Nashville. Right now I would predict that the Jets take the 8th spot and the Predators fall a little short.

If you think about it, the Kings were at a disadvantage for a loooong time when they were in the Smythe. It was them and a bunch of Canadian teams with rabid fanbases and far bigger budgets. Their window when it was easiest to win divisions was from '93 to '13. Had a couple of dark periods in there obviously. Weird how that stuff turns out.

I know Winnipeg has never won a division, but Phoenix did in 2012, and I think Atlanta had one before they moved to Winnipeg.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but the Kings aren't alone. I realize most of us have only lived in a world where the idea of the Leafs winning the cup is a joke, but at one time they did win many Cups. They have 13 Cups and only 6 division titles. There could be others. I didn't check all of the cup winning teams.

There was only one "division" up until 1967 when the Leafs last won it. Is it a division if the league isn't divided at all?

No. Apparently there was an American Division and Canadian Division before the league contracted to 7 and then 6 teams in the 1930s.

Ah, interesting. I never really checked the standings that far back and didn't realize they had divisions prior.

So were all 13 cups when they had divisions?

I'm pretty sure they last won the cup in 67 so that would be a no.

I would imagine the divisions thing would only be truly applicable from the cap era on

Otherwise it's kind of a technicality like Montreal winning 95 Cups in a league with 3 teams and all of canada as a feeder league for only montreal

Just to have fun with history and counting then :) 1932 is the only year the Maple Leafs won the cup where there was an actual division in the league. All other times they won the cup, it was with 4, 6, or 7 team leagues with no additional divisions within the league.

So, they actually have only 1 cup win during years when the league gets divided further. The rest of the time it's as top team in the league with no further division among teams. So, during league play when they have had divisions, the Maple Leafs have 6 division wins but only 1 cup win during years when divisions existed.

Ultimately it's a battle of semantics and not trying to start a fight. It is interesting nonetheless!

I hope the Kings win the Pacific Divison, but I don't want to see any Division Champions banners hung at Staples Center (...and no, I don't care if they change the name a dozen times, it is still Staples Center)

But…but the prestige.

If they win the division there will definitely be a banner. The Smythe one is up there.
