Players with the full hardware case

Gretzky never won the Calder because he was ineligible he played in the WHA that doesn't exist anymore. Another reason the Calder isn't meaningful.

It's also quite funny (and inconsistent of the NHL) that they allowed Sergei Makarov to win the Calder at age 31, despite already having played 13 seasons "professionally" (don't get me started on what Soviet teams did for their players in order to circumvent the IOC's "amateurism" rules) in the Soviet Union. I mean, at least they changed the rules so you have to be under 26 to be eligible to win it now.

You mad bro? Why are you so insecure about Ovechkin?
We already saw an insecure Ovechkin supporter and now we’re getting an insecure Crosby one.

Move on. This discussion is bigger than those two players. It doesn’t mean that OV is better than Crosby man. It’s just an interesting topic.

Yeah, Gretzky technically doesn’t make this list but that’s due to a real anomaly in the system. And I don’t think he or Lemieux should be excluded from the Richard when both fled the league in goals.

Gretzky too, no? He's just missing the Selke I think, and was ineligible for the Calder on a technicality. He even has several times won the Lady Byng for that matter.
As dumb as it is that Gretzky was ineligible for the Calder I did rule him out because he didn't get it. Even if all of the trophies had existed since the start of the league I don't think there is anyone who ever would have won each one. Howe and Beliveau would have gotten everything but the Selke as well had all of those trophies existed, barring some kind of bizarre voting.

More so that the rule intent on voiding his eligibility for having played in a competing league wasn't meaningful. The only people that didn't see Gretzky as the best rookie in the league that year were NHL shills. There's more than a handful of winners pre-Gretzky that played pro and semi-pro hockey before joining the NHL.

It’s rare for a superstar scorer to have managed to win the Selke. Yzerman did it. He was stuck behind prime Gretz and Mario or otherwise would’ve had everything. Even then though, he finished 2nd in the Calder. Fedorov as well.

Aware of its existence? Sure. Sponsored by Rolaids or Cold FX or whatever… I don’t consider it a serious award. As I said, others might.
Again you don't know what you are talking about. Rolaids has nothing to do with the award but lets move on.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, no nhl award is sponsored.

But let me guess you watched the awards show and heard a sponsor being talked about before the award was announced and went with it, to discredit this one. But ignoring that every award at the show would of had the same thing.

There was an award I know for sure was sponsored in the past: the Bud Light Plus/Minus Award. They got rid of it though.

Apparently it was known under 5 different sponsor's names, but the four before Bud Light were before my time as a hockey fan.

LeFleur wants to discredit anything that Ovechkin hasn't won. Some people live through hockey players.

In the end I don't see what relevance a sponsor plays in its legitimacy. Especially when every time I watch NHL hockey all I see is sponsors everywhere even on their helmets but if its an award that means its bad. Its hogwash.

One of us doesn’t.

It came in as the Cold FX Messier Leadship award. It was originally awarded monthly….

I don’t put any value on it. You want to? By all means do so. But it’s no different than the Lady Byng.

It's hilarious how predictable this thread was, you knew it would be tailored exactly towards making Ovi the only guy.

IMO I'd consider a "full trophy case" for forwards to be a Cup, Conn Smythe, Art Ross, Hart and Lindsay. For defenseman, I'd sub out the Art Ross for the Norris, even though Orr was a freak who also managed to win the Art Ross. It's basically showing that a player was able to be dominant in both the regular season and playoffs while also getting team accomplishments with a cup. Things like the Richard, Calder, Selke and such are more niche awards that aren't needed for a "full trophy case".

Personally I'd even be tempted to take out the Lindsay from this as well. I feel like the Hart, Norris, Art Ross and Conn Smythe are clearly the most "prestigious" individual awards.

I'm not too interested in this debate again, but I'm just extremely pleased that no one has mentioned the Messier trophy that I could see. That thing could go drown in a septic tank for all I care. I put it lower than the Byng.

Yes it's very rare. Even then though, Yzerman and Fedorov didn't get the Calder. I was also wrong in my previous post as well since Beliveau and Howe didn't get the Calder either. Yzerman never led the NHL in scoring outside of Gretzky and Lemieux, though in 1989 he probably outscores Nichols if Gretzky doesn't exist. Fedorov would have a scoring title but not leading the NHL in goals.

Does Mark Messier really select the winner each year? If thats true, it kind of is a make believe trophy. Not even saying this to defend ovi or anything. Also if your including the calder, the selke should be included. Not sure who that hurts or helps because neither Ovi or Crosby has one.

quick ai google search
  • Selection:
The winner is chosen by Mark Messier himself, a Hockey Hall of Famer and a renowned leader in the NHL.
