I remember he got suspended in a preseason game for defending Phil Kessel after a hit or something like that. Because he jumped over the bench to stand up for him. Is it possible that set him off on the wrong foot?

When Clarkson had his big 30 goal year, I had a friend who was a Devils fan that I talked hockey with often. He wasn't a big fan of his. He would call him "Clarktard" and say he was a dumb player.

The suspension may have contributed to his poor start, but he never looked good or dangerous at all. His skating was a joke. He would fall down multiple times a game. I remember my dad watched about two games of his with Toronto and said he wouldn't be very good.

It's not like he excelled in the Dead Puck Era and then couldn't keep up in a faster, more wide open League or anything. The NHL was basically the same in 2014 as it was in 2012. I am perplexed that he had a 30 goal season to begin with. I figured he scored a lot of gift-wrapped goals and picked up a lot of garbage in 2012, but I watched a video of his goals from that year (years ago), and if I remember correctly, many of them seemed to be at ES and textbook grinder style goals. He did shoot at 13.2%, which is unusually high for him.

No one mentioned Huberdeau yet?
I got you

Jonathan huberdeau
Topped out at 115 points, signed a massive contract and spent the next 8 years topping out at 55 points, people thought that was going to be the low point for him...but it turned out to be highest point total for the rest of the contract

Teemu Selanne. His second highest goals scored in a season was less than 70% of his rookie year total.

Yup, and unfortunately it was a major injury deliberately done to him. I think he would have been easily a top ten player of all time in the argument for top 5 if that never happened to them.

Bernie Nicholls.

Scored around a hundred points for a couple seasons, then around PPG for the two seasons immediately afterward as a center.

One day some little guy shows up to play on the Kings as another center and Bernie, now completely left open, goes off for 150... 70 G!!! and still getting 80 A!

The next season he started of blistering again and LA dealt him for two very good wingers. Once on the Rangers and beyond, he became around PPG again.

Not exactly what the thread is asking, but Joe Colborne in his first game as an Avalanche, scored a hatrick. He finished with 4 goals on the season. Yup. True story.
Similar to Ryan Poehling

Poehling scored a hat trick in his very first NHL game. Colborne already had many goals and seasons under his belt.

Depends if Edmonton keeps the first line intact. If they do, he will certainly get a lot of goals playing with the best playmaker of this generation.
Nah. Connor is healthy and will score more this year. Hyman will get 30 at the highest. Which is still amazing. Because I think according to leaf fans we are supposed to regret this contract.

I don't see a repeat of last year but the way Hyman scores, it's easy to see him as a regular 30 to 40 guy. Similar to Reino with the Cats, both don't need the puck on their stick for long and get plenty of chippy ones.

Interesting when that happens- I’d assume he kinda fit the Devils’ mold, and no one really noticed he was more a product than a producer. Then a new team, and bam- different situation, and poor play is exposed. I feel like Olli Jokinen, Huberdeau, and Timo Meier all had that to some degree- in Meier’s case there mighta just been fear there, but instead it was just a bad coach (who Buffalo then stupidly hired..).

Oh, and the Cheechoo besmirching is ignorant. Dude got hurt as hell, he was a legit scorer, y’all just don’t know and fall for flashy headlines. Shame.

Justin Holl had a similar thing happen, he had two goals in his first two games for the Leafs meaning that it would've taken him 9 years to break Gretzky's record at that pace. He then had 9 goals in his next 320 games meaning that it would take him roughly 400 nhl seasons to break Gretzky's record

I don't think we are going to see Hyman score 54 again. 25-30 this year is what im guessing.
Ide get 25 on that line and powerplay......Hyman scored 50 again
