Players that HF Boards overhyped?

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Guy gets treated as a generational D man but he cant even play defence

Thats funny because hes 36 years old and on the #1 pk unit of one of top pk teams and just last night neutralized Mackinnion and outplayed Makar head to head.

Soooo maybe the issue isnt other people's understanding of hockey and defence but yours?

I'll throw out a name: recently waived Sonny Milano.

I remember that draft year, folks were pretty sure he'd be a star. He was often compared favorably to Alex Tuch, who the Wild drafted and I followed with interest at the time.

Product of WJC numbers no doubt.

Entire 2016 draft class
Well, that one's tricky because it actually ended up being a pretty awesome draft class, it just wasn't due to a lot of the players people expected it to be. (Also will always be compared with 2015, which might go down as the best draft ever when it's all said and done)

Matthews
Tkachuk
Fox
McAvoy
Keller
Chychrun
Hagel
Thompson
Bratt
Sergachev
Kyrou
Debrincat
Gustavsson

Quite a few all star level players in there. Hagel, Fox, Bratt, Kyrou, and Debrincat all being selected outside the top round that year is pretty nuts.

Overhyped -> Bedard, aka the next McDavid or the next one.
Underhyped -> Celebrini, aka good player but below Bedard.

Bonus:
Slakovsky, was overhyped, people said he would be a dominant player in his first year. He’s getting there now but he turned out to be a project rather than a immediate impactful player.

Elias Pettersson aka Precious Petey

Vancouver fans made a big impression on me when they said that little dude Mike Matheson tossed on the floor like a rag doll, was better than back to back cup champion and captain of the Florida Panthers, Sasha Barkov, and back to back to back famous loser, Connor McDavid, and a lot more people than that. Comparisons to Gretzky were insane.

I had a lot of laughs in the day with Vancouver fans saw greatness in Precious Petey and expressed how he was going to take over the NHL when all I saw was a guy who, let’s say, needed some help.

Turned out I was right about him.

Also anyone saying Matthews is out to lunch. This site went out of it's way trying to prevent giving Matthews his flowers every step of the way. And he has an absolutely insane peak of about 4 years. Now that he has regressed from that people trying to pretend the good things people said about him at the time were never true. It's just dishonest.

They're still mad he won the Hart "because of the Toronto media"

Such a shame about Pulju, his WJC numbers are great. I think it's a mix of him no longer being bigger than everyone else and having trouble translating his game in general to the NHL. I thought Edmonton had struck gold there 🙈

He had a good pre season one year and Oilers fans on here wouldn't shut up about how wrong we all ere for calling him a bust.
