Played close to 9 mins. How much time does he need to make any sort of impact

Why should he get more than that? Has he earned anything?

Dudes trash
He had some shots and threw some hits. I didn’t see him cough up the puck and his penalty was bs. he can’t score and fight every night. Check out his minutes and his salary and find another focus.
Not every team can be blessed with an elite fourth liner like Cedric Paquette or Alex Newhook.

How the f*** was that trip on Holl not called????? Are you kidding me????

Well that's not true. That's an opportunity cost for another player who could be developing some Semyonov and maybe heck even Ho Sang

I don't think they fit a 4th line role with this team. Maybe they come in and you move Engvall down? I dunno... hopefully he becomes more effective.

If this cares about accountibility which they don't, Simmonds lasts a max of only one more week on the team. Sadly, this team's motto has been to satisfy the grit crowd the last year then make the right decisions.
This. So much this. Not putting in Liljegren last night on a back to back was also moronic. I am astounded at how NHL coaches and GM's have such archaic views on team construction.

Slow start the first 2 games, but then good the last 2. He’s been much better than Amadio, and IMO better than Ritchie too. About tied with Engvall for 3rd weakest forward, which is perfectly fine for a 4th liner on a cheap deal.

If they cared about accountability, Keefe wouldn’t be the coach and Dubas wouldn’t be the GM.

Curious how you have faith in an organization that you suggest cares more about appeasing the fans than doing what’s best for the team. FTR, that’s absolutely ridiculous but if you believe it, how do you also believe in them?

You’ve just described something that should kill any credibility they had left if true.

Simmonds is more than fine for 900k. He could never skate or handle the puck so I’m not sure what people expected… He has 1 goal so far, Mitch Marner has 1 assist… Find someone else to whine about. Much bigger problems.

They believe the team listens to the fans when constructing the lineup. It’s a way to blame the fans for the team.
Pretty bizarre but it’s why no one takes their opinion seriously.
Takes all kinds to build a fan base.

 I thought it was tongue in cheek at first. Nah, they actually believe it… but also believe this administration is the best and brightest.

…figure that one out.

When constructing a team today, you need to be either the fastest team or the toughest team. Simmonds is part of the second type.
The Leafs are neither fast or tough.
We gave up on being fastest 2 yrs ago.
Then we decide not to be tough...
We can not make the playoffs this year without deciding which we are.

"The guy is tough as nails but seriously, how and what does he eat? Do you guys think he wears prosthetics when he's not playing? Isn't it really unhealthy and destructive for your skull/jaw/etc to have so many teeth missing for so long? You can't say the guys not 100% dedicated. I'd have wanted my teeth back. I know he's on legue minimum but can't the boys all pitch in for a couple implants or something? Somewhere James Neal is shaking his head smugly every time poor Wayne takes another sip of smoothie. Is this cruel and unusual punishment? If you didn't know he was a hockey player you'd think he has scurvy"

@Leafblooded

Good question. Hard to speculate though.

A quick Google search tells me that the last documented outbreak of scurvy was in Afghanistan 2002. Although a symptom of scurvy is bleeding gums/losing teeth, Simmonds wouldn't be able to play 5 min of an NHL game (due to the fatigue).

Is your point that you have complete faith in Dubas/Keefe/Shanahan to make the right decisions BUT you acknowledge that they make decisions based on peer pressure?

I’m having difficulty figuring out how part time faith equals a full time commitment to the managerial team

Sometimes we throw some good things out

The Islanders have missed Matt Martin through their first two games — both losses.
Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post
Martin’s line, with Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck, has often embodied such a mentality. The group’s checking, physicality and energy has been key to the team’s rise to contender under coach Barry Trotz.

Dubas wasn’t satisfying the grit crowd, his smurf model failed and his thinking evolved. Why the word grit is bad to some people here is silly, nobody wants meat heads with zero skill, just guys who can go to the dirty areas, drive the net, stickup for each other, win board battles. You need that on a team and frankly other teams thought we were shot and easy to play against, we’ve tried to address that. The fans have zero to do with the evolution, common sense does though.

Simmonds looked really good last night, loved that fourth line. He can stay in the lineup all day long with that kind of impact on a tertiary line.

Probably wears a denture or flipper when not on the ice. Most players don’t get their dental work done until after their careers are over since the bill usually ends up being 50-100k. Steep price when the chance of breaking it all is high. Missing teeth is degenerative to the bone, but it’s more of a problem with molars/back teeth than the front. There is also the option of bone grafting to build the bone back up. Some players even get implants to hold the bone but keep it buried below the gums for years before they put a crown on it.

The bolded is most likely where the disconnect occurs.

In all honesty and seriousness, I just can't imagine the quality of life detriment he faces due to missing so many teeth out of his head for so long. Benzos wouldn't be enough to make me accept that

You can't understand it unless you have lived it .. a lot of us knew no better growing up and it was our daily reality .. only when you stop playing do you really start to grasp it

When I had my implant put in after I was done playing, I wasn’t told how important it was that I wear a mouth guard because the next time that tooth goes it’s taking bone with it. Got paired up with a dentist on a golf course who gave me the rundown of how stupid it was not to wear a mouth guard even for pickup hockey. I did as you said though, had a flipper, and had the ‘screw’ not sure what you’d call it ready to roll for when I finished playing. Pretty impressive what they can do with implants.
