If we as mere hockey fans can see the flaws Holl brings to every game, why can't the hockey professionals in Shanahan, Dubus, and especially Keefe, see how bad he is?

I coached under 18 minor hockey players with better D positioning and hockey IQ!
At this point, what are the options?

They have no cap space and didn’t have enough draft picks to accrue the resources to address it.

I find it incredible that people are not recognizing that Holl only plays this poorly when paired with Muzzin. Like you have to be blind or incredibly biased not to notice that
it's all here

Ovi looked crusty as hell last night. Try that again a month from now and we're going to overtime. Get the puck out the zone when you have more than one try to win a battle and get it out. He had the puck clean on his stick at one point and didn't get it out.
Put me down for Holl winning a battle and clearing the puck instead of helping them setup a top 3 one timer in the league then blocking it for us. Seems like an easy choice.

I agree try it again next month it's going top shelf

Keefe singling out Holl to praise was weird and to me reeks of pumping trade value. He’s as good as good when lily gets back

It’s weird to me that he gets the spotlight so much suggesting he’s some integral player.

As the player type that he is, he should have a fairly restrictive set of instructions and go-no go risk calculator and just keep it simple. The last couple of minutes were great. Another sequence where he migrated up the right wing wall, ended up in a corner battle and then tried walking out to take the puck all crease crashing? That was the unchained game plan in full display.

No mention of how rusty the Leafs looked as well? They really should have buried them with all their missed chances.

I thought Holl played a decent game for the most part last night. He's very good on the PK, and when he's playing a simple game, he's got value. The problem is when he tries to be Bobby Orr, and gets stuck with the puck going the other way... just simplify your game, and I think we'd be happier with him.

Watched Holl jump in the rush last night and I yelled at him to not jump in the rush, puck was turned over and Holl took a penalty. Case closed.

Other than some great, timely blocks he was pretty bad again. Watching him live is a sight to see, he looks totally confused.
That non pinch in the third period got him a few boos. He is playing scared and it’s clear as day. He has the Yipps

Ovi didn’t get touched all game pretty much and in the last few minutes while they were short he was WIDE open the whole time. Like WIDE open.

To be fair this isn't on Holl though? Thats a systematic issue not a Holl issue.

I did yell at my TV a few times when Holl didn't win his battles to get the puck out more than once on that shift. I felt he owed the team that blocked shot, which made him break even, not acquire a surplus.

I did like his display of heart crashing the net at the end of the 2nd period though. Recognized there was only 10 seconds left so he can risk failure. Stuff like that acquires a surplus.

My opinion on Holl is he is a #5 D man at best who can fill on on your second pairing for a short period of time if required. This is his peak. We should be trying to add a right handed defenseman that is noticeably better than Holl.

Nope. Sorry. If you're the reason Ovechkin is getting additional opportunities to tie the game in the first place, you're in the negative for the entire shift after. You didn't break even.

I suggest people re watch the shift because the block is wiping memories of soft defence before that.

I get I'm being a hard ass on this but my boy scoob didn't even get an extension so it's no-nonsense mode now.

There was a moment late in the game where we were up, and Muzzin brought the puck in and took it deep in the O Zone.

He then rang it around the boards, and Holl, the closest Leaf, decided to pinch. However they got it past him, but then flubbed it just outside the blue line.

We have GOT to learn at some point to not chase the puck like this. Being this aggressive in the O Zone is just insanity when you are up.

When Holl is in form, he looks really really good. I remember him shutting down McDavid and he has some offence to his game. He looks like a #1 on those odd nights. And then the next game he can be equally as bad and look like a #6/#7. So it's hard to get a read on this guy because when he's good he can be great but then he can also be bad and inconsistent.

I think Holl and Muzzin getting burned one game trying to spring Nylander and Tavares loose and then Holl scoring the GWG on a give and go with Marner deep in the third is kind of a good example of the high risk reward go-no go sliders that Leaf defensemen play with. They’re going to be aggressive and activated to try to make a play but that hero/goat potential is always there.

There's a difference between 1 guy pinching when you are trying to win the game, and having both defencemen behind or within 5 feet of the oppositions goal line while up 1 goal.

Different scenarios.

Like I said, Justin Holl is just as likely to burn you as not any given night.
