Too bad the 3 spots drop in lottery...if could just have dropped 1 to #3, Byram would be a lock....but could fall to #5.
If the Kings get Byram at 5, things can turn around in 2 years. Things changed for the Kings after 2008 draft of Doughty and Voynov...
even though it took Voynov 3 years to get to NHL. They were a big part of the 2012 Cup, obviously.

In 2 years:

BYRAM DOUGHTY
ANDERSON DURZI
CLAGUE WALKER

core lacks some size...but not skill.
Would be best to acquire / sign a good vet under 30, that has size and physical - within a year or 2.....like when the Kings added Greene and then Mitchell
and later Regher.
Durzi definitely not a lock in 2 years...but his skill, hockey IQ and ability to move the puck will get him here.
Believe 2 years in AHL will go a long way on working on his D, strength and overall game. O'Donnell, get to work!

Looks like a championship bound d corp. love it !

Honestly buying Dion out has nothing to do with cap saving. It would be to open opportunity for a young defense man to get nhl experience.

We need the young d-man who actually can play in the NHL first.

LaDue was hopefully that but nope. I don't think Macdemid is going to develop into much. Clague maybe, but hopefully they can get him in regardless if Dion is under contract.

Exactly. We will have a lot of young D trying out for jobs. Even if Phaneuf is in the press box it takes away a spot for someone like LaDue to be around and get in every other game or so. We won’t need cap space for another 2 years.

Doubt they buy out Dion, the money is just a little too much to eat. Dion will be the 7th dman and healthy scratch most nights. Rather he sit than some younger guy that needs to play.

when will we have? I think it may make sense after this year but not this offseason

I think if Dion isn't here LaDue can actually play more then a handful of games every so often. Players need to play and not worried if they make a mistake they will sit for days . I think the kings have more players looking for a chances to play then spots Seriously LaDue MacDermid Roy Walker Strand Clague maybe Anderson Brickly Moverare Reddekopp Lintuniemi all looking for a regular nhl job Dion is blocking they opportunity to sink or swim

I question if giving most of the people on that list that shot to sink or swim are worth the cap hit for 4 years.

LaDue has had plenty of opportunity IMO. MacDemid isn't ever going to be a top 4, Roy and Walker maybe. I am going to be honest that I do not know enough on Strand. Clague could still use a year in the AHL.

It is too soon for Anderson and the rest are very much a stretch.

If a player proves they deserve a spot I would rather RB move out Forbort and Martinez to gain assets back while freeing up space than see Dion's cap hit on the books for 4 more years. I want Dion to be eating popcorn all year, or best case scenario develop an allergy to his helmet and go on LTIR for two seasons.

Back to 'planning ahead' topic:::::::::::::
What's with all this trade Phaneuf and ____ for Edmonton #8 and Lucic?
Just buyout Dion. Don't want Lucic near this team, under any circumstances. If the Kings are clearly going to the 24-25 avg age, this means that Lewis and Carter should be gone too. Glad neither of their names came up at the TM conference. Other players names were mentioned and even Kovalchuk and TM said he planned to meet with him soon...maybe before he goes to the worlds? But MANY slots must open totally clear - like 4-5 and that would mean: Dion, Carter, Lewis for sure should be gone and possibly Martinez and Quick. This is not a trimming and keeping these players for a transition - they have made it clear they have a new plan. A new plan that is 24-25 years of age, quicker, more entertaining, more offense, new style. That cannot include Lewis and Carter for all of those reasons...and then add the KILLER quote from Blake: "we have to be better at 2nd center"...when he said that 2 times, NO WAY is he in the delusional camp "Carter rebounds". No way. If you have watched 3 or more playoff series, Carter could not skate or play in any of those games. He would be lost, coasting around even worse than this past regular season. He's done. Since no team wants him in any deal and Blake's ONLY named 1 SPECIFIC POSITION (its true) to be better (#2 CENTER) this means if a buyout is not the plan, waiving Carter is the plan. 1. Carter worst 2nd center in NHL and not rebounding 2. he will be 35 and Kings going to 24-25 age 3. does not fit in plans for faster, more exciting, more offense (he cannot score 5 on 5) 4. new coach; needs the team that will move forward with THE PLAN (77 not part of it) 5. ONLY SPECIFIC POSITION (go through all media stuff) Blake mentions must be better AT CENTER #2. 6. #1-5 more than seals this, 100%.

I think you're hoping for far too big of a roster turnover in one summer in a hard cap league. They're certainly not waiving Carter. Waiving him does nothing. It just puts him in Ontario. Sulking, taking time away from actual prospects. The AHL isn't about stashing a contract. The Kings have done enough of that. No more Moulson's. Carter has already said he's not retiring.

To get to an average age of 25 from where they currently are, they have to get rid of roughly 74 years from the roster. There's a lot of old and unproductive players. It's likely going to take some time to get rid of them. You're probably going to have to be patient.

Pretty much. I can see maybe Lewis at the draft. Maybe Toffoli at the deadline depending on his season. Martinez might be their big chip to cash in on at the deadline. No one will want Carter unless he bounces back in a major way. I have no idea about Quick, but part of me hopes he gets slightly injured in camp and it's a LTIR off into the sunset for the rest of his career. He retires a King and it feels good man. Phaneuf grinds out the remaining time in L.A. in the pressbox.

I disagree i would like to start the year with drew alec and derek all on there own pairing.

Player A and drew
martinez and player B
Forbort and player C
player D

I do it this way discuss each player a-d.

So player A someone to play with drew. I agree Clague should start in the ahl but this is the spot he should end up in. I also think Brickley is ready to play this spot as well. A long shot would be Byram should we be able to draft him. Drew needs to be with someone more offensive then Forbot and any of the 3 would be a good partner There are long shots Chaz Reddekopp or Jacob Morerare Also possible whoever we draft with the leaf pick.

B I want to play alec on the left side more. So i would put Walker Ladue roy or strand

C with forbort i would like to try whoever doesn't make it with Alec would have first opportunity Also would like to see MacDermid in against some teams
Also would like to see Alex Lintuniemi get a few games As bottom pairing 7 th defense man
As u can see there is alot of nhl players looking for serious mins imo Dion going could let someone get a look and surprise Its not like that person isnt going to be better then any worse the Dion

Player A and drew
martinez and player B
Forbort and player C
player D
I agree this would be ideal.
Unfortunately there is no one to play with Drew. Most of the players you mentioned likely aren't ready for regular NHL minutes, let alone top pairing minutes.
Ontario's D core should be stacked next year. I'd rather let them develop properly than rush them.
It might make sense to sign a bridge UFA d-men to eat minutes while our prospects develop. Here's a list of UFA d-men:

The Kings are gonna suck. Let Big Mac play. Let Phaneuf play. Sign a placeholder if you need to. Let Ontarios blue line play nice big minutes. Clague, Anderson etc.

Ladue is a dime a dozen player that’ll be out of the NHL pretty soon. Clague , Anderson, Durzi , Moverare are defenseman that can make the Kings in next year or 2. We will have a strong d corp again pretty soon.

I’m high on Durzi , I think he’s the perfect modern day NHL defenseman and see him being a top 4 20 minuets a night dman who reaches 50+ points . Clague I think needs another year but Anderson can surprise n make the team out of camp. Anderson is one of my favorite prospects.

AHL team could have:

Anderson, Durzi, and Phillips added.

Anderson will have to shine big time in camp to make the Kings.

Clague is ahead on the depth chart. Brickley is too despite his year. MacDermid brings an element the team sorely lacks.

Roy, Walker, and LaDue are still in the mix.

Who knows about Phanuef honestly.

I even suspect Carter will be on this team and given a chance to revive his career.

I suspect Carter will be on this team due to lack of a market for him. Also he should be given every chance he wants to continue to play in the NHL.

I agree on LaDue, just seemed like two years ago there was a chance he could become more.

I wouldn't mind seeing Martinez moved at the draft to open up a spot for one of the younger (not youngest) defensemen.

I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, we would be missing a lot of good leadership, experience, and potential mentoring on a very young and inexperienced blue line, but on the other, Martinez' value is not going to be any higher than it is now.

Well, I guess we keep Dion around for all those intangibles I listed (blech).

Forbort - Doughty
Martinez - Walker/Roy
Coburn - Walker/Roy
MacDermid

Phaneuf - at home talking shit about how he's the best Dman on the Kings while drinking his beer...lol

If we're going to suck ass again, then we might as well give these guys up to the TDL to see what they have then trade away and maybe bring up some of the kids... I can see Clague, Anderson and Brickley getting some PT after the ASG, especially if we suck again or even if we trade an Amart, Forbort and/or Walker/Roy/LaDue

Isn't Moverare a nothingburger at this point?
