The Murray/Chicago thing is interesting. I wonder who we could get.

I'd love Saad, but that's a pipe dream. With moving Maatta, I'm assuming they're prepping to finalize a deal for MM (or go after someone else in FA, I guess).
Saad is meh to me now mate.

I'd honestly be more interested in getting Nylander + Strome and our 2nd back for McCann + Murray.

New 3rd line - Kahun, Strome, Nylander

I also wonder if Murray's best value to us is as a vehicle to get JJ outta here. Even if it means getting nothing tangible in return for Murray, just ridding ourselves of JJ is probably as good or better than any addition we could realistically get for Murray.

If Maata had negative value and Chicago had to retain salary I do wonder how insane the price would be to get rid of JJ.....

While Kahun's QO was 800k, his real salary last year was around 2.8. So, I doubt he'd take less than 3.5. It would've been between him and McCann and judging by his usage Kahun was the odd man out.

Whatever one thinks about what Kahun would have earned or who he'd be playing for, he would have been qualified. And we'd either have a versatile, productive young winger or a good asset.

No. Because the same reason we did not qualify Simon is the same reason we would not qualify Kahun. We're worried about what he'd get in arbitration and Kahun could probably push for 4 million meaning we would just walk away regardless.

We likely would've traded Kahun for like a 3rd round pick if we kept him. Which is why I never got why people were so butt hurt about him being moved. He was gone regardless and the trade added needed NHL depth prior to an unplanned pandemic and the return of multiple players that likely wouldn't have been healthy for the playoffs.

You can stick your head in the sand and shout Kahun is a productive young winger or good asset, but the facts are the facts and they are what is above.

Based on what?

Kahun was far more productive here than Simon ever was despite far less advantageous deployment.

Based on:

1. The fact that they have like no cap space
2. The fact that they never liked him much, seeing how they traded him for Connor Sheary.

I know this website absolutely loves him, but there is zero reason to believe that Kahun would still be here next year even if he wasn't traded for Sheary.

This is exactly it. They didn't qualify Simon because they were scared of what he'd get in arbitration. Why wouldn't that apply to Kahun, who the Penguins appeared to like LESS than Simon?

I can't see a team biting on that much cap....even with 50% retention on JJ.

Would the kings take back Johnson and give us Maatta? Same cap hit no with the retention. LOL!

Being that they are both LDs, we’d be in the same predicament. Maatta is the lesser of two evils though I get nam flashbacks at how many odd man chances he gave up being so damn flat footed and getting burned.

How about we just get rid of JMFJ without bringing any other issues back?

Is that even possible? We have no picks to package with him.

Kahun produced at a better rate than Kapanen this year.

Empo, he even scored ES goals at a better rate, which as we know is the most important thing!

What about a 3 team trade... CHI trades Saad and a 2nd to a team with a lot of cap space in exchange for that team trading Saad at 50% to Pens for Aston-Reese and Pens trade Murray to CHI.

to CHI:
Murray (rfa)

to PIT:
Saad (3.0)

to ?:
2nd
Aston-Reese (1.0)
Take on 3.0 cap space

Pens essentially take in 2.0 in cap space but exchange ZAR for Saad. Pens could buy out Johnson and sign Lafferty for .700 and still have $2 in cap space...

Guentzel Crosby Kapanen
Saad Malkin Rust
Zucker McCann UFA
Tanev Blueger Sceviour
Lafferty

Dumoulin Letang
Pettersson Marino
Matheson Riikola
Ruhwedel

Jarry
DeSmith

Who’s the 3rd team? It would be a no unless their GM is ....................

Do you just not read the posts you reply to or something?

What you think of Kahun here is irrelevant. We're not talking about how good Kahun is. We're talking about how the Penguins wouldn't have kept him. Are you actually able to give a reason for why the Penguins would have kept him and done something differently than what they did with Simon, who they appeared to like more than Kahun?

A team that has the cap space but wants to acquire assets for said cap space since they have no plans on competing next season?
Staal and his $5+ mil was just traded with a 2nd. That doesn’t put Detroit over the top but they acquired an asset. Saad only has one year left so the team is only on the hook for 1 year. And I love 12 Monkeys!

Here are some more facts about Kahun:

1. He played less per game in Pittsburgh (13:27) than Simon (14:24)
2. They traded him for a pending UFA 3rd line winger and a malcontent having a bad season
3. Kahun had as many games below 10 minutes as he had games above 16 minutes
4. Kahun was healthy scratched for the Penguins last year, including after a game where he had a goal and 3 points in only 8:45 TOI

What is there that suggests the Penguins would have kept him? They obviously were never that high on him. You can definitely argue that they wasted him with how they used him, but they obviously never liked him that much. If they're not qualifying Simon, who they appear to like a lot more than Kahun, why does anyone think they would have qualified Kahun? They would have either traded him for a pick or not qualified him in fear of what his arbitration result would have been.

Detroit really needed D though and Staal’s money paid would be actually cheaper than Saad. I’m not sure they’d want to pay 3.25 mil for ZAR and a 2nd.

Cost a pittance to qualify him. No reason not to qualify him unless they traded him instead. He was productive, healthy, and cheap to QO.
