Yager’s progress in the year after he was drafted is encouraging. Usually a pretty good sign the prospect has the ability to improve.

Can he come over to the AHL next year? He’s 11th in points per game at the WHL. Seems like he’s ready for the next step but wouldn’t want to rush into the NHL.

I loathed Shero taking Pouliot over Forsberg. That still irks me.
Franchise alterning mistake in a sense but it would likely have negated us winning B2B so...whatever. It's likely that we still would have made the Morrow trade which got us Guentzel. So the potential of both Jake and Forsberg on the wings here makes me gush.

Yeah, I imagine he'll go to the AHL next year. What I hope is that we can put a good team around him to further boost potential. I think it's rough on guys to come to the AHL team and have no one to work with to improve. But if you can surround him with the likes of Pono, Kouvinen, Poulin, and maybe a couple of the FAs we signed like Hinostranza and Zohorna, then you can continue to bolster his development.

That said, if I'm Dubas, I get a bit more aggressive in getting these younger guys up. Maybe not 1 at a time here and there. I'm talking recall Yager and Pono and sit Nieto and Acciari/Harkins/whoever we have there.

Doubt Yager is AHL eligible next year. Sliver of hope bc of the weird COVID year but in normal times he wouldn’t be. Hard to see the CHL/WHL letting 2 birth years matriculate at once.
Is the exact wording of the transfer agreement between the NHL and CHL public? Yager is completing his 4th season this year which I think is the usual bar to clear.

Yeah, I went down this rabbit hole a while ago. It’s confusing.

But he’s only played 3 seasons technically. CHL counts as a season as 25 GP. Yager played 100% of MJ’s games but only 24 total in ‘20-21.

Put it this way, Savoie had to go back the WHL this year.

I can see the CHL forcing him into one more year.

I would definitely be interested in him playing up to 9 games to see what he is like in the NHL.

That sucks. He seems ready for the next step but the NHL seems a little too big of a jump.

These rules are stupid but I know that’s been pointed out many times before.

I mean, ideally, a year in NCAA would probably the best spot were it an option. More time to get stronger, competition is a bit of a step up but not overwhelmingly so.

I think I went down there with you... And after looking at it more, because he is a later birth date (After the Sep 15 cutoff-date, but also born after Dec 31st and not 20 until 2025 (technically 2 years after his draft year)) he doesn't qualify for the AHL. If he had played 25 that shortened year, or turned 20 before New Years he would have qualified. Savoie also didn't qualify, being born on Jan 1st.

That could also all be wrong and I'm very confused now. If they gonna make mandated years played, at least count "years" out by % of the season played.

NCAA Update heading into conference championship weekend.

Luciuis & Laatsch (Wisconsin) - No games last week. Despite the upset last week, basically a lock to make the NCAA tourny.

Yoder (Providence) - Friars got knocked off by UMass in a one game playoff 3-1. Yoder held off the scoresheet. This was doubly bad as UMass was chasing Providence for one of the last at large bids for the NCAA tourny and likely leap frogged them. Friars might be one of the last teams out.

Devlin (Cornell) - Big Red had a two game sweep of Harvard to advance to the semis against Dartmouth. Devlin returned from injury, but was held off the scoresheet (seems to play on the 4th line). Cornell is right there with Providence on the wrong side of the cutline to get into the NCAA tourny, so they likely need to win their conference.

Broz (Denver) - Pioneers had a two game sweep of Minnesota Duluth. Broz had 1G+3A in the two games. Denver gets St Cloud St in the NCHC semis, and then presumably a date with North Dakota. They are a shoe in for the NCAA tourny either way.

I actually like him in MJ next year more than I do the NCAA. Offense will be forced to go through him with Firkus, Mateychuk, Savoie all aging out.

My biggest problem with Yager is I don’t see a play driver in the NHL, hopefully another season helps him work on controlling shifts himself rather than just being a blunt instrument.

Pens will have Sid and Geno and Eller so there is no rush here for Yager. Getting bigger. stronger and maturing into a 20 something will help him in a couple years. Pens have to continue the re-stocking of the pond here. Poulin, will be up next year and younger prospects like Broz, the guys from the Guentzel trade and Puusitinen, need to play and emerge into NHL caliber players. In two years after Dubas moves Rust and Karlsson out then the openings are there for those who are ready physically and mentally to do so.

Yager could play wing right now…give him a shot in training camp..if he’s not ready, he’s not ready but he should be given a shot

Yager might be a winger at the NHL level and should be tried there next season…he’s no lighter than Jake was when he got the call up…

If he comes in and can do it great…

But I hate when teams spread 9 NHL games out, maybe do a conditioning stint in the AHL, release the player for the WJC and then he’s back to the WHL for 20-30 games. All as a “reward”.

Would much rather he plays 60 WHL games and WJC than that.

Yager should 1000% be given a couple real NHL games next year. He's played 3.99 WHL seasons. I'm not exactly sure what another will do for him if it's true he can't go to the AHL.

If we do have end up having let’s say pick 9 in the draft and keep it, who are some players that we should target in that area? Also, does anyone know if we’ve scouted anybody specifically multiple times this season? I personally really like Catton and Yakemchuk.

I like Catton too. He looks NHL-ready to me.

Buium showed up in some clips while I was looking for Broz highlights and he looks good, too. But I’d prefer a F.

Yea I like Buium too, his skating looks a little clunky at times though. Either way, hopefully we have 3 picks within the first 2 rounds depending on if SJ gets the 1st. Will go a long way in rebuilding the prospect pool.
