Ilyin keeps putting up points. 5+8, 13 points in 24 games.
I know the KHL is a lower-scoring league but do we have any decent comparisons for him?

Not to state the obvious but if he can become something at the NHL level, that would be such a massive win. Finding a NHL gem in the 6th round is something that is desperately needed after flopping so hard in the 2nd for years.

Not that I would ever draw the comparison but in Malkin's post-draft year he put up 32 points in 52 games. And Ilyin is pacing to almost exactly that. That doesn't mean anything but it's also definitely a bit of an eye-opener.

Similar pace to Kaprizov, though Kaprizov led his team in scoring, Ilyin is 7th.

Hey dumb question but where are you getting rosters and player-by-player scoring for the KHL? For whatever reason hockeydb is missing tons of information on the KHL.

EDIT: Nevermind there's a separate tab in Elite Prospects that I missed that has it.

But Ilyin is also a center who plays in all situations. The penguins really need a center to prospect to work out. But Ilyin is probably still like 2 - 3 years away anyways

So Ilyin will be Kaprizov at worst and Malkin at best. Sweet!

In 4-5 years, we will need centers once Sid and Geno are slow or retired. Having Ilyin and Yager in the wings, as prospects, is nice.

I know it's not exactly common to get a gem in the 4th round or lower but it would definitely be nice to finally grab one. I feel like most teams draft a pretty good player within that range at least every few years. I don't even know what the last one would be for the Penguins... Dom Simon? And that's REALLY stretching the definition of "gem" I'd say.

Big Puusy is probably an NHLer.

I think that’s a good model for success. You get a couple elite franchise players like Sid & Geno, keep them for 12-15 years of their prime, then just land a Guentzel or Rust every 5-10 years in the 2nd or later, and an occasional Kuhnhackl and Blueger so you don’t have to overpay for role players in free agency or trades.

Once you land those star players you just need to periodically supplement the rest of your lineup.

Based on Ilyin’s clips he doesn’t look like dominant or some elite talent or anything, just pretty skilled and good all-around. Seems to use his linemates well and when they find him he finishes. In the longer clips of his goals it’s not just him cashing in on someone else’s work, he’s involved in the play that leads up to the chance too. So, hard to judge his upside and I’d still be cautious but it’s pretty rare to produce that much at that age. Simashev and But, both 1st round picks, were even briefly sent down to the MHL this season. And that’s not really unexpected, it’s a good league and the teams are under no obligation to develop NHL prospects just for them to jump ship.

He's like a poor man's version of a hybrid of Kovalchuk and Koltsov, with Titov's skating, Morozov's smile and a touch of Mogilny's attitude.

Nice. Like you said... didn't just simply cash in on the goal, there. He helped disrupt the breakout in the NZ then made a nice pass to start the counter the other way. Nice pass on the assist, too. Nearly set one up a moment before, too.

Not spending too much time on it but there’s some Swedes tweeting speculation that Andreas Johnsson is returning to Sweden.

Just from highlights, Ilyin has a touch of the Guentzels to me. Nothing hugely flash or wowing, just consistently in the right place making plays. Can make them a bunch of ways too, doesn't need to be perfectly comfortable to find a guy.

That would be quite appropriate for him quite honestly. He's been out for "personal reasons". Not sure if that's family-related or if that's "I'm not NHL good anymore related".

Another goal today.

Looks like JV hockey

In all seriousness I’m trying to discount this kid because I don’t want to get my hopes up and he just keeps picking up points.

Shame about the Russians being out of the WJC, would really like to see him against his age group.

It's pretty much confirmed today. Will be announced on wednesday, so I assume he'll be put on unconditional waivers tomorrow.
