Can’t say this trade makes sense for us. If we’re calling the Pens, I’m hoping it’s to discuss Dumoulin. That of course would only be around the trade deadline and IF the Pens are out of a playoff spot.
Maybe we don't have to wait.

Dumoulin+Kapanen for Barrie*+Yamamoto

*My understanding is that Edmonton wanted to get rid of him.

Kap has the higher cap hit and the extra year, He’s a cap dump.

If Oilers were dealing Jesse they’d take whatever pick they could get and the cap space. At least with Jesse they have the option to walk away from him at years end if they want or try to re sign him at a reduced aav. Can’t do that with Kapanen.
if the oilers are dealing jesse its either for just for cap space or part of deal for a top for d man

Sold. We get to see what Dumoulin can bring this year and free up Barrie’s 4.5m cap hit for next season. That’s worth the Yamamoto Kapanen swap in my books.

I'm hoping Hextall can get a 1st for him, GM's love a good resume and he's got a good resume.

Somewhere on Uranus
Edmonton get:

- Kasperi Kapanen 3.2M UFA 2024
- Pittsburgh 2nd 2023

Pittsburgh get:

- Jesse Puljujärvi 3M RFA 2023

Both players been struggling this season. Kapanen bring speed and could be a fit with McDavid now when Kane is out. Puljujärvi is still young, hits and goes to the dirty areas. Can also be used at a netprescence. He is young enough to turn it around.
that 2nd is the stumbling point. Both make 3 mill a year and even though KK has one year more--but their overall play is not that different

I haven’t had a chance to watch any Pens games outside of the game they played vs the Oil, has Dumo been sub par this year? I’m not seeing any reluctance to part with him in the responses to my post inquiring about him.

Dumo - Kapanen for Broberg - Pulju. Nice.
Dumo would require 50% retention, but I think there’s a decent base there for a trade. Some of my fellow Oil fans will probably disagree with parting with Broberg, but I’d rather part with him and keep our pick this draft (possibly for other trade ammo). He’s still very much a project at this point. Super talented, but doesn’t look like he’ll be more than a good #4/5 d man at the NHL level.

You're adding a pick to get retention. Penguins have zero incentive to retain on Dumoulin.

Absolutely not. 1 for 1 would be fair, not adding a 2nd rounder on top of Kapanen.

People grossly exaggerate the negative impact of Kapanen having an extra year. The last time the Penguins made a trade like this was trading Hagelin (1 year left) for Pearson (3 years left) and there was no adding there. It would be a 1 for 1 swap of a struggling player for a struggling player.
No they dont. Its a strong negative

He sucks now but who knows what a change of scenery can do. He's a -1 but should be -30 for how bad he's been. But maybe some GM will be like "hey he used to be good".

It would be 1 for 1. But Edmonton doesn't do it regardless, Poolparty adds more in terms of 200ft play vs Kap. Also, if Kap plays on a team with Crosby and Malkin it's a good bet he won't fit with Connor or Leon either.

Edit: ya the extra year on Kap also kills it.

Unfortunate to hear. Vintage Dumo is an ideal partner for Bouch….. but vintage Dumo probably means Pens are currently in a playoff spot and the topic is moot.

Please call right away :).

As for the OP, I agree Oilers need something, but a 2nd seems too much. I’d be OK with a 3rd and happy with a 4th.

Cap has value and over the next 2 years Kap is owed 3.4 million more then Puljujarvi. There is no chance in hell this would be a straight up trade. If the Pens fans want it 1 for 1 make the dollars equal.
