Edmonton get:

- Kasperi Kapanen 3.2M UFA 2024
- Pittsburgh 2nd 2023

Pittsburgh get:

- Jesse Puljujärvi 3M RFA 2023

Both players been struggling this season. Kapanen bring speed and could be a fit with McDavid now when Kane is out. Puljujärvi is still young, hits and goes to the dirty areas. Can also be used at a netprescence. He is young enough to turn it around.

So what's the reason Pittsburgh is adding a 2nd, let alone anything, again?

No ...almost mirror images of inconsistent play.

Pitt keeps their pick.

200k isn't worth a 2nd and they both suck with the potential to not suck once in awhile. This would be a classic 1 for 1 change of scenery deal if it were to happen.
I imagine the 2nd is to cover the extra year in Kap's deal.

2nd is probably too hefty but I do think Pittsburgh would need to add.

No, that's a 1:1 swap.

Puljujarvi's "potential" is about the same as Kapanen at this point. This is a "crap for crap" trade in hopes that either find their game with a change of scenary.

I'd do it at this point. It's a Powerball ticket trade - you hope but you know the changes of it working out are low.

Kap has the higher cap hit and the extra year, He’s a cap dump.

If Oilers were dealing Jesse they’d take whatever pick they could get and the cap space. At least with Jesse they have the option to walk away from him at years end if they want or try to re sign him at a reduced aav. Can’t do that with Kapanen.

Wasnt this here just last week or week before?
Anyway, if something like this happens, its only gonna be basically 1-for-1,
if there's a sweetener, ain't sure which way it goes, and likely ain't more valuable than ~5th

No way. Without the pick, that’s a bad deal for the Oilers. Kapanen has no value and that added term on his deal is a drag. Should be an easy no for the Oil as a 1 for 1.
I agree the Oilers would want nothing to do with Kapanen. Pitt wants nothing to do with JP. Too many passengers on both sides already. The player pitt needed was a healthy kane . The player the Oilers need is Rust....
Unfortunately both need defensive and goaltending help as well.

That may be true but what team is going to take Puljujarvi and give you a pick and cap space? Why would any team do that?

Puljujarvi is in the same situation as Kapanen - you're underperforming and you make $3mil. His value is that of a "cap dump" but there is the potential he can be more useful to another team. You just take the other team's Puljujarvi. No one is giving a meaningful draft pick or space for him just like they aren't Kapanen.

kapanen is going to be hard to move. Target a change of scenery deal for a player with the same contract term.

pens are adding picks otherwise to compensate for that second year on Kapanen’s bad contract.

Make it a 4th or later instead of a 2nd and sure

Pens are taking on the uncertainty of resigning Puljujarvi given his high qualifying offer

I don’t know what team would be willing to do that just like you don’t know. But I think it’s logical that teams would be more willing to do that with the younger player who’s only under contract this season. That’s my only point. With Jesse there’s options, you can test drive him for this year and still hold his rights so you could walk away and not qualify him, you could try and re sign him at a much smaller cap hit or you could try to sell him to another gm for whatever you can get to try and recoup the likely low pick you gave up.

With Kapanen there’s only one option, pay him 3.2M this year and next or pay someone to take him off your hands.

Absolutely not. 1 for 1 would be fair, not adding a 2nd rounder on top of Kapanen.

People grossly exaggerate the negative impact of Kapanen having an extra year. The last time the Penguins made a trade like this was trading Hagelin (1 year left) for Pearson (3 years left) and there was no adding there. It would be a 1 for 1 swap of a struggling player for a struggling player.
