This post my @MarkovsKnee convinved me that a Hoffman buyout is a viable option:

The fact that Hoffman has a two year cap hit of $1.12m next season saving us a ton of money then rises to $1.66m when cap is going up $8m-$10m is too sweet not to use.

Remember, Price is going on LTIR next year, which means we'll be in a position to maximize that LTIR at the beginning of next season too.

All of this means that opening up as much cap space NEXT year when all teams are against the cap is way more important than opening up space the following year when everyone has space.

It gives us an opportunity to do what Carolina did and bring in valuable players for cheap, or bring in another Monahan - a dump attached with a 1st.

We have ONE more year to capitalize on this after that cap space will no longer be at a premium.

very interesting.

First time I hear this. Had you heard this @Sorinth

Armia could also be a possibility. If they can't trade him, not sure they need him at all with the kids that will be pushing next year.

The 1st year, they practically save his entire salary,,,,,cost about 1.4M when the cap goes up.

I don’t know if Hughes tried to move Armia but guys who are 6’4 and toolsy, always seem to have 9 lives — just like lefthanders in baseball. I suspect that this is a guy who will find a taker, esp. that he has already shown that he can be effective in the playoffs.

Curious as to why pick the guy with the lowest $$$ contract? I would think if it's about performance than pick the guy with the highest paid contract?
We all know a guy on the team who hasn't scored a PP goal in 3 years, and has a ton of favorable icetime and linemates.....
Just curious....
I think it’s because they want to recoup a contract and some space under the cap. Good chance he gets picked.

Pitlick and Evans are a couple guys I thought would deliver more than what they have so far.

Pitlick was flying last year. He doesn't have that same jump for most of this year to date.
Evans is having a very pedestrian season.

I don't like their demeanor on the ice. Can you not see they really don't care to put out? That is enough to not to want them around period.
I mean if it's all true then them being in the NHL is probably worse then them being in the AHL because pretty much all our top prospects are in the NHL (Or juniors) right now.

Yes I saw it and I'm perfectly fine with that strategy, I just don't think buying out Hoffman is going to be the difference between taking on a bad contract or not since we have a ton of cap space so we can take on that bad contract and keep Hoffman.

And frankly if we are looking at a buyout to make room for bad contracts then Gallagher would probably be a better candidate as you would save 5.7m next season and down the line when the cap has risen the 2.2m would be neglible. Anyways I'll stop derailing this thread and stick to Pitlick stuff.

Good points... who did he have last season? Was it Pitlick and Pezz?

He was our 3rd line center last year & played a lot with Lehkonen til we traded him. They were a good duo. Games meshed well.

Then Byron came back & they were together with Anderson. There was Lehkonen-Evans-Toffoli, Pitlick-Evans-Lehkonen, Pitlick-Evans-Anderson, then Byron-Evans-Anderson, as towards the end of season Rem got moved to 4th line to play with Tyler.

He also played a bit with Caufield early in season & RHP, when we went through that injury phase in January.

Toffoli eventually got moved up to play with Suzuki, but DD was trying to spread the offense and wanted Tofu with speed, and a bit of grit, so he started with Evans/Lehk.

He misses Lehkonen a lot though. They were great friends off the ice, and a strong duo on.

Our 4th line center last year was Dauphin, except when Dvorak was injured and he became our 2nd line center. He played with Pezz, Perreault, etc.

Evans needs speed & grit on his line. Lehkonen was the perfect linemate for him. Danault too. He played really well on Danault's LW. But, he needs that type of player to play well.

What do you rhink about Anderson - Evan's- Gallagher. Or Anderson - Evans - Ylonen. Or Anderson - Evans - Pitlick?

Not Gallagher huh. So closing your eyes and making a wish and blowing out candles on your birthday cake is just a bunch of malarkey then huh. Well then, f*** you candles and the cake you rode in on,cake sucked anyways.
Oh,please don't tell the little lady though, she made it. Then again, screw that, she spelled my name wrong, would have preferred the cake just said ''happy birthday'' no need to put my name on it,especially with the added P at the front.

Evans is a fringe NHLer, you have guys like him in most farms. He is weak and not talented enough for a top 9 role, he is not the type of player I want to center a fourth line.

Exactly right and mirrors what many have been saying all along. Three players who are detrimental to our player development program being useless placeholders.

I'd like to see him more in the top 9 on the wong before making that call. I have him ahead of most of our wingers aside from Slaf as a potential solution to getting the 2nd line going

he's scored quite a few goals and made quite a few assists that require a high degree of skill.

There's really no point in buying Hoffman out unless we are trying to go big in the UFA market. Even if we give 10m to Caufield and 4m to Harris, we would have 6m in cap space on a flat cap with a full roster. So I'm not sure why we need to buy him out.
1. Might allow us to do another "Monahan" type deal
2. If one of our youngins pushes their way into our top 9.
3. Allows Molson to use the money to buy/repair equipment that Slaf will continue to break. ;)
