They needed another center and they get an asset with him. None of the kids are ready and the UFA options are garbage.

I'm not stoked about it but this isn't the end of the world.

Isnt this dude kinda a cancer in the locker room? Blues were scratching him a lot near the end of the season. Weird taking on this guy if youre trying to make the playoffs.

As many other posters have stated already the Pens are not contending anymore. They are collecting picks to start the rebuild and slowly but steady they will sell of players for picks.

You can see Hayes as the plus on the 2nd and not vice versa. He’s pretty much irrelevant for the Pens’ future and if he gains some value and the Pens can trade him for another pick, well, that’s two picks for nothing.

Can't see how he's going to be a cancer when the Pens have tons opf vets who won't let that happen.

surprised no one has mentioned this, but the Blues 2nd is predicted to be in the 40’s and the Canucks/Mikheyev 2nd rd. Pick is predicted to be in the 50’s. So for the Pens this bet on the 2nd rounder looks much better than the 2nd the blackhawks received. I would much rather have the 45th pick than the 55th pick in any draft and any trade.

This

Based on Dubas' track record in player acquisitions/trades, Probably something not particularly very bright. Wonder what the future considerations are?
Future considerations is exactly nothing.
I don't know if theres a rule you can't give players/picks away without getting anything back. But essentially every time a team "gives" a player to another team they get "Future considerations" back.
Guess it's just a paper thing cause some rule you can't gift players away for free

Suffer through half a season or season and a half. Get an early 2nd, retain at this deadline or next and get another pick. No problems with that.
He shouldn't approach the the 17+ minutes he had in Philly, although with Sullivan you never know. Just replicating what he did in St. Lou, he's an improvement over Harkins, Acciari, Poulin, etc. It is what it is.

Mikheyev also costs $500k more.
Not a huge sum. But with only about $7 million in space left, it's important.

If this is the present reality for the Pens, embrace it and go all in. Move Pettersson while his value is high. Retain heavily on Smith to sweeten the pot for him. Retain on Jarry and/or Rakell to see if there is any market for them. Then use all that dead space to take on the league's junk. And if anyone rebounds, sell them off like the Habs did Monahan

Dubas is that bad. He makes Hextall look mediocre.
I’m not exactly in love with the deal. But, if Ron Hextall were making this trade, you can pretty much guarantee we would’ve been paying St Louis the 2nd.

People saying Dubas is bad when he basically just got a second for free is on par for this site these days. People are so set on being negative regardless of what the news is. Dubas could be fired tomorrow and posters here would already be railing on the next guy. He pulled off a great trade for Karlsson and got the best value he could for Guentzel. In less than 12 months, he’s done at minimum a fairly good job.

Hayes does not matter in this deal on this roster and is yet probably an upgrade over Jeff Carter. And we got a 2nd round pick for it. Asset management and roster improvement. Good minor deal.
