Just looking over rosters for D:

Gorges
Jordie Benn? meh.
Oduya? Nah.
Barbario? Currently listed on IR and can't find anything about if he's practicing or? Looks like a solid defensive depth D-Man tho looking at his numbers.
Schenn. Big shot blocker. Not totally against it but probably prefer the other bolded more.
Connauton.
Bartkowski. Likes to block shots as well. Seems to never play there in CGY.
Davidson. Nah.
Benning. Likes to block shots but not a relied on defensively.
Auvitu. Nah.
Folin? Would he be available?
Beiga? Meh?

Bolded would be my preferred pick ups.

Skimmed through some of the thread but cant find anything on what our current Cap status is.

With Cole (2,1) and Reaves (1.1) gone and Brassard (3) back does that make the trade effectively cap neutral? And if so how much wiggle room do we have for another deal?

We actually gained slightly - if you can believe that (I can't). 2 players off the roster, and only 1 on it... but we gained ~212k of cap space (real dollars).

Would Bartkowski be an upgrade over Hunwick? He’s definitely cheaper.

JR tested our and probably his own patience with his ridiculously long pursuit of a 3rd line center this year but it seems as though his patience paid off in the end. We'll see how Brassard fits in but it's hard to do much better at the 3rd line center spot from a talent standpoint.

The value was fine too. Gus was the logical top prospect to go given Murray and Jarry are here and are still so young.

I don't like moving 1st's but the retention on Brassard makes it too good to pass up, imo. The only piece it really hurt to lose was Cole. It'll be interesting to see if they add a depth defender or if they're content with Hunwick and Ruhwedel. That's a discussion for the other thread though.

So I went out on a date night with the wife to a movie. When I went in, they were still working on it. Came out of the movie, got in the truck, saw the news, and was thrilled! Wife looked at me odd but what else is new. Then I see the full details...Lindberg! ZOMG! Honey! Honey! Honey! We got Lindberg too! Unbelievable! Omg! "That's nice dear...". The entire ride home I proceed to tell her all about how great this is for us.

I get home...and see Tobias instead of Oscar. Bummer, lol, but oh well. "Well maybe Tobias will end up being better than Oscar...I like the name Tobias better than Oscar." Thanks babe.

This was quite the trade for JR. Gave up a lot but we got back a huge asset. Overall, pretty happy. Craziest trade process I've been apart of since I started watching them in 91. Course...things were different back then and when I was a wee lad.

Well with how Sheahan was playing come Dec and beyond... it's not like it was that hard to wait things out. The board was going crazy, but Sheahan has been very good for us since mid Nov.

Glad I wasn't the only one. I saw that and was like holy shit! Rowney will never see the ice again. Then saw it was the crap one and not the good one.

Think either could be better on certain nights.
Hunwick, if he remains here, really has to get his game in gear and they really should be getting Ruh back into game action. He was playing pretty well before he went down.

I'll be honest, I don't think any of the guys he bolded would be an upgrade over Hunwick. Maybe Schenn for a very specific role (ie. replacing Cole's physicality and PK minutes). But the rest, IMO, aren't upgrading on what we currently have.

I can agree with this.
Really doesn't hurt to have the depth tho on the back end for PO hockey.

Caps fans are having a meltdown hahaha.

Remember our meltdown when they got Shattenkirk?

I have this feeling that PITT is gonna do LVK a solid in a future deal. Maybe OTT, too.

They got MAF...and a 2nd in 2020. We're even.

Simon-Sid-?
Hagelin-Geno-Hornqvist
Guentzel-Brassard-Kessel
Kuhnackl-Sheahen-Rust

IMO thats the line-up we should see in the playoffs. Maybe sheary could be next to Sid but I think he should be used to find a better fit. I obviously dont want Kuhnackl in the line-up, but you know its going to happen.

Are you unaware of Zach Anton-Reese?

Another aspect of this deal. We managed to be both buyers and sellers. We moved 2 guys who are going UFA and weren't going to return. In doing so, we became a better team than we were yesterday. And a significantly better team next year than we would have been.

Cole leaving is a hurt. The ONLY thing that could have been better is if it was Hunwick out and Cole stays. But you are correct, nice that we got value for two guys that likely won't be here next year.

Re Shattenkirk:

I think most knew that Shatts was not worth the package he was being traded for and was going to take off to NY anyway. And everyone was right, Shattenkirk was never the difference.

I feel like Brassard is 100% different. He's a damn good player that will make the difference for our line-up as it gives us a formidable 4 lines to go up against. Shattenkirk wasn't even what the Caps needed and they went and got him anyway, that was just bad GM'ing. They literally got Shattenkirk so no one else could.

That's not why you make trades, their GM is a tool.

JR got Brassard because he knew his line-up needed it to go over the top.

Also, the Caps haven't made a huge trade because they don't have much to offer by the way of a huge trade.
