Wait, does it have a NMC? If so, could/would we theoretically have to protect both if we can't lose ourselves of one of them?

Also, definitely a fan of the signing. If he becomes our starter, that's a great deal.

He's not eligible for a NMC yet.

Love this deal. I'm sad that the writing is on the wall for MAF bc he's been my favorite player since he was drafted, but this is the right move for the Pens going forward.

Can they trade MAF to Dallas now plz

I second this notion

Anyway, this is basically the same contract that Vasilevskiy got, so I really like this. I remember some people were trying to say that Murray would be getting $5 million on his next deal (as in people on this site), so I'm glad he fell in below $4 million.

Another thing this does is that if the Pens decide to buyout Fleury, it would still leave a manageable cap hit for their starter. Murray's new contract plus a MAF buyout would cost $5.66 million, which is basically exactly what Fleury is making right now. I doubt it would come to that, but just worth noting.

Big contract for such a small sample size of games played. I know he won a cup, but personally would like to see him play for a whole season before signing a deal like that.

Murray + $1 million back-up + bought out Fleury's dead cap space = what the Pens are paying Fleury & Murray this year.

Obviously buying out Fleury would be a worst case scenario, but if it comes to that then so be it.

The odds of Murray playing for Vegas next year are roughly the same odds as me being their starting goalie.

Going to feel weird when Fleury is traded.

Very weird.

I'd be curious what his deal would have looked like if Pens got knocked out in 1st or 2nd round last season. IMO he is definately worth the money, but I'd just love to know what the difference in a Cup run he went on and a decent playoff run (if the lost in round one or 2)

He's not getting the extension this early in the season, that much is for sure.

Ultimately the difference between this contract and Vasilevskiy's contract is $250k per year extra for Murray...which seems fair. It's not as if Murray came out of nowhere to get hot, the kid was setting records in the AHL as a 20 year-old.

Well, he did break quite a few records in the AHL too. ;)

Murray is getting nowhere near Vegas. In fact he's not leaving Pittsburgh, for at least 4 more years. You can take that to the bank.

The Penguins can't afford to have $9 million tied up in goaltending for the next 4 years. It's also not fair to Fleury and Murray, both of whom deserve to be #1's.

Is he going to be traded?

I mean, if Murray backstops the Pens to a deep run or Fleury implodes, sure. BUT, what if both goalies are equally good or Fleury is a little better, including the playoffs?

As someone said on the Pens board, I won't believe Fleury is going to be traded until Bob McKenzie announces it's done.
