They had Bemstrom down there earlier in the year - he scores about as many goals as Nylander does points. A better 200 ft player too.

Perhaps they didn't think they could get Bemstrom through waivers at this time of year.
They've been shopping him all year and even got him through waivers. So it probably has to do with Pittsburgh offering something for him even if it's just a 6th rounder.

Right, I don't think getting either player to the AHL was a priority for the Jackets.

Exactly. It's the hockey equivalent of taking an old sofa out to the curb for trash pick up and randomly having someone offer you $5 for it.

Good gamble by Pittsburgh, Bemström could flourish on a different team. Was just never going to be the CBJ imho. I guess an AHL body and a 6th is... something.
This was my first thought as well as Bemstrom could be a decent player in the right spot.

Definitely a classic Dubas tinkering move. More likely than not, this is absolutely nothing. But the price paid is also absolutely nothing. So it's a good way of "doing something" while not actually doing anything.

Goes to show that pres.of hockey ops and interim GM John Davidson didn’t have any faith in Emil Bemstrom as a goal scorer at the NHL level but Jarmo kept Emil around anyway.

The Penguins and Blue Jackets play 3 times in March, if Columbus wants to upgrade to a 3rd round pick bad enough, just let Bemstrom score atleast twice against them when they play in all 3 games.
Pittsburg will gladly take the 6 points and run with it then.

Nylander is just not that good. Time to go home.
He makes more money on his 1-way deal as an AHL player than he would in Sweden. He also grew up splitting time in North America and Sweden, so he's likely just as comfortable here as over there. Columbus will likely give him a go for the remainder of the season, I don't think they'd re-sign but you never know... I think as long as he can get a 1-way contract, he will stick around, maybe even a 2-way contract. But an AHL contract would mean it's more advantageous to play in the SHL.

He'd honestly be a prime KHL candidate if the Swedish government wasn't restricting that (although given his own dual citizen status, it may not be as much a concern for him). .84 PPG over the last two seasons in the AHL, over 100 career NHL games, 26 years old. Could likely get good money and a top line role on a good team over there.

He might earn less in Sweden but still better schedule and so on but its not like hes gonna terminate his contract for that. KHL? I doubt it even if he was allowed. He is more of a swizz league kinda guy.

But I agree. That one-way contract is an easy way to stick around in NA for the time being.

PS. Has anyone watched him with the Jackets? Whats the report so far?

He is free agent at end of the season so he is able to leave. NLA also pays well for imports and has a nice travel schedule and the cities are seen as desirable places to live. It’s definitely highly coveted as well.

Nylander hasn't looked too terrible so far.

Goal and an assist last night

Awesome, I'm happy for him! He looked like dog poo in Pittsburgh but I was always rooting for him. Glad to see him making it work in Columbus.

Bemstrom has been quite decent for us on the third line.

Sounds like both teams will be happy with this trade.

That would be incredibly awesome if it works out like that.
