Not really. Caufield doesn't deserve Dubois money or get paid more than Suzuki. The respect the hierarchy thing is kind of dumb when there's no legendary superstar captain on the Habs right now.
I agree as a Habs fan. There's this narrative amongst Habs fans right now that Caufield signed at a discount in order to instill some sort of inspiration for team players to sign an internal player cap limit, similar to Bruins or the Avs, apparently had.
This simply isn't true. The guys only had a career high of 43 points, and sure his potential is through the roof, but the reason this type of contract is signed now is because the risk/reward for both player and franchise is met somewhere in the middle for the scenarios of him either living up to his potential and the contract being a bargain or him falling short of expectations and the player making more than he should if he signed later. MacKinnon did the same thing and that's why his contract was so low, but then he took max value the moment he could.
Caufield simply isn't getting more money until he literally puts up the points over a regular basis. If he wanted more money, he would have had to waited or got a bridge contract, but he valued securing the money now as more important than risking underperforming just to see if he could get a mil or two more. I don't think it has anything to do with some plan amongst players to sign for less and build a contender. That contract is still huge, and it's more than fair value given the circumstances and timing.
