Mass is a thing in contact sports even if you don't hit people. It includes things like reach, the ability to block, keep players away as well as inducing fatigue by leaning or hanging on people. It's also good for screening and seeing the ice.
But does he? I mean does he really have a smart stick? Does he get in the paint and screen the goalie? Does he win his battles along the boards?
People often overestimate size when drive is also an important factor. Sure all things being equal everyone would pick the 6'5" guy but for Engvall I don't think the all things being equal is there. Also Engvall I believe is the type of player the Leafs should try to keep since he's homegrown and useful but it's just crappy that despite the fact that he's not that expensive TOR still has to get rid of him due to their wonky Cap situation.
