I think Suzuki is definitely the #1C, he gets all the offensive minutes. He's a 3 C on most teams. But here he's a number one center who is also our defensive specialist. Very odd but it seems to be working.
Shutting down the opponents top line has been the modus operandi for the Habs for decades.
Danault has the role now, Plekanec and to some extent Eller had it before him and Carbonneau before them.
As long as this team lacks superstar talent up front, they will keep playing this way.
and people back then were already saying you could not win with Plekanec as #1 C... now ? there's people defending Danault and his 0.1PPG cause we won ONE round of playoffs. Go figure...Pleky used to shutdown Ovi, Sid and prime Krejci while producing .6 or .7 ppg. Not the same thing at all.

Yeah the bar has certainly been lowered. Back in 03-04 Koivu went ppg and shutdown Joe Thornton in his hey day and he wasn't considered good enough either.
Ironically it's sort a good thing because it was always unrealistic how we put everything on the shoulders of the #1 C and Starting Goalie to carry the team when the real problem was the team just wasn't very good and the GM should take most of the heat for that.
It would be interesting to go back to see who played the most minutes against Joe that year. He was a non factor though with the cracked ribs. Theodore had more point than thornton in that series if I remember correctly.
Who were the centers that year?
Koivu
Ribeiro
Perreault
Juneau
Dowd?
I'd think CJ probably would have preferred Juneau or Dowd on him as much as possible, but that just a guess.
From memory of both the games and the media/fans talking about the series Koivu went toe to toe with him. But it's a long time ago so perhaps the numbers don't bear that out. And I vaguely remember Koivu had a very similar rib injury to Thornton that year which was used to double down on the whole Thornton is a choker narrative.
or puts them in an opportunity to produce and not have to defend....
This , Plekanec was also on the powerplay because of his vision and was playing late game for his defensive aspect also. He had multiple 20 goals years while playing extremely good defense in his prime.Pleky used to shutdown Ovi, Sid and prime Krejci while producing .6 or .7 ppg. Not the same thing at all.
This is what happen of 10 years of Bergevin and the media overhyping someone. Let's never forget the fact that Claude Julien and Ducharme who are both in love with Danault , never had PP time because hes lack of offensive talent and barely hit 10 goals in a single season with the best forwards in the last years with 18min+ of icetime.and people back then were already saying you could not win with Plekanec as #1 C... now ? there's people defending Danault and his 0.1PPG cause we won ONE round of playoffs. Koivu would be compared to Mcdavid in 2021 in Montreal , the bar is so low here , doing a poke check means you shutted down the player for the entire game. Let's just forget that the fact we are still in this are because of Price , the kids and 2 of our 4th liners outplaying our core. Imagine Erik Staal and Perry are giving more than , Tatar Gallagher Danault Anderson and I would be limit with Toffoli because he was not that much of a factor against Toronto and he saved us game 2 friday.Yeah the bar has certainly been lowered. Accurate Koivu was in fact injured and was still effective.Yes, koivu did have a rib injury which was revealed after the habs were knocked out. I do remember that. I can't say though how it was in severity compared to thornton, but I can't imagine any rib injury is comfortable to play through.
Every good team has two good lines...

Now we idolize someone that has 0 offense , who barely made any difference against the Leafs and im not even gonna add the Jets because the Jets sucks and it should be a quick 4-5 games at max.

One line is 8/10 significantly better than the first
The Jets sucks what about it , they are barely doing anything on the ice. They shoot from dead angles like we are. They are missing 2 top 6 players and both goalies last game probably had the easiest night of their lives. If Toffoli did not score that goal , perhaps we would still be in overtime at the moment we speak.
I don't think Habs played such a bad game. Staal got 2 breakaways, there has been many 2 on 1 with Suzuki, Kotkaniemi had a breakaway, I think Hellebuck was amazing. He deserved a star, he seems unbeatable one on one.The Jets sucks what about it , they are barely doing anything on the ice. They shoot from dead angles like we are. I expect habs to go out way stronger tonight , both teams were completely invisible last game.
Edit : Yes the canadian division is a meme at this point. None of those teams will beat Colorado or Vegas in a bo7 playing like that.
One line is 8/10 significantly better than the first
and in our case so far, two teams with only 1 line (injuries)
It's not they played bad hockey , it's just I don't think both team played hard enough to challenge 1 or another.I don't think Habs played such a bad game. They didn't play the best hockey I ever saw. Jets were flat but Habs had some chances to score enough to be 5-0 with the breakaways and 2 on 1. Hellebuck was by far their best player. Good mention to Perreault but that's all. It's not they played bad hockey , it's just I don't think both team played hard enough to challenge 1 or another.
Yeah those 2v1s were... okay alot of shots into the goalie but like I said , it's been the same for 3 years now. They didn't play the best hockey I ever saw. Or unless McKinnon and Lankeskod gets injured, the kind of luck Habs had when JT and Foligno got injured. This round Scheif is out, Demelo and Stastn are injured. This year is the year of the luck. When Kreider ran into Price, the badluck was Price injured the rest of the PO. This year, the luck turns.Yeah those 2v1s were... okay alot of shots into the goalie but like I said , it's been the same for 3 years now.
It's just that the team moving to round 3 will be demolished unless Price/Hell pulls a .970 0.90
Yes we were lucky enough that Tavares got injured and Shyflee tried to kill Evans... But every good team still has two good lines, who in majority are both better than our best line offensively. Add to that the fact that when we don't have last change (half of the time), the opponent's coach can try to exploit Suzuki's and KK's lines...
Suzuki and KK have to produce and defend, but for Danault it's apparently forbidden to do both...
