Normal when a team are in trouble with cap space the team need to pay for clear money.
We don't know everything. Maybe Dorion thinking he will lost a players via suspension (team canada jr.) and want to take this money to sign Pinto. Does he can buyout a players this summer ? not sure because of Senators selling. With all incertitude coming via the Ottawa sales make all decision tougher to make

First, one of the 7 teams with $2M cap space have to want to take him on.

Second, they would have to replace Brannstrom with Kleven or Thomson, weakening the defense in a pretty critical year where every point matters for getting into the playoffs.

Third, Pinto would still have to sign for $2.3M or less, which is apparently a little below market.

Fourth, they'd still be running a 21-man roster.

The stronger move short and long term might be biting the bullet, paying to dump Joseph and bringing in cheaper talent to flesh out the roster. But it depends on the cost.

I would suggest to you Pinto is more important than Branstrom

I’m as happy to see Ottawa jammed up as the next guy but how is this system functioning when a rebuilding team on the up and up is already cap strapped? This hard cap is hurting everyone.
Nobody forced them to overpay a marginal fourth-liner. Rebuilding team or contender, you can’t make stupid moves and expect not to be punished for it.

As a Leafs fan, this is hilarious and the Summer of Dorion continues.

as far as i remember there is no cap space gained from a suspension.

They're not a typical rebuilding team, their rebuilding pieces, aside from Sanderson starting next year, are all on 8 million contracts. Rebuild started close to 7 years ago. The only core piece not on a long term, expensive contract is Sanderson, who start's his next season.

Their core are all locked up at ~8 million a piece, for the next 5-9 years. Short term pain for long term flexibility.

They've made a ton of stupid signings resulting in dead cap, >5 million this season, dropping to 800k in 2024-25. B. Ryan, C. White, M. Murray, M. Del Zotto. That's what's making the biggest difference this year.

Probably trying to sign Pinto to an 8x8 contract too because of his potential.

Honestly, they did it to themselves, if they are rebuilding they don't need old vets like Giroux and Tarasenko to try to compete.

They also signed a bad goalie to a bad contract this summer.

The only saving grace is that a lot of dead money is coming off the books next year.

Unfortunately this is the season where we all expect the Sens to be a threat (insane division though)

You can't possibly be suggesting that the Giroux signing was a bad idea... right?

Who needs good vets on short term, medium valued deals

They'll have 5 million of dead cap off the books after this season. Will have >15 million in cap space to sign one top 6, three bottom 6/line F, and a bottom pair D. They are not in any kind of problem whatsoever, outside of this 2 week period of fitting Pinto in

You are risking losing other players when you sign those contracts.

If you think you are close to contending, Giroux was a good signing, if you think you are a few years out, it's probably better to keep your picks/prospects and younger players.

Burying Joseph frees up about $2.033M, which may be enough for Pinto based on Morgan Frost's deal (very comparable) but maybe he wants a bit more.

I think they move Joseph to Philly but will be a prospect and another lesser pick over one of the 1sts.

If it's non-hockey related, you get cap relief. If it's a hockey reason, the full cap hit still applies.

Either way, I would have a hard time believing Batherson is involved in it but I guess we'll have to wait (another year???) and see.

Who did the Sens lose? They have every single core member, outside of Pinto, signed long term.

They are in no risk of losing Pinto, at all. That will be taken care of, without a single doubt
