"Grandpa Weston, tell us about your first game in the Majors."

"Well, I hit a home run in my first at bat. Scored three runs in only one official at bat. A teammate of mine hit two dingers to reach 200 for his career...oh, and, yeah, our starting pitcher threw a no-hitter in his first start at home."

"Grandpa?"

"Yes?"

"Have you been drinking again?"

I'm an idiot, couldn't watch the game but kept checking the box score. For whatever reason the only thing I was paying attention to was Lorenzen's pitch count and saw it at 111 after the 8th, I kept wondering why Rob hadn't gone to the pen.

Rojas looking like he might be a player
He is a player. Watch him go after balls in the OF, looks like he's not even trying out there, but then you see him run down balls at the 400' sign, just has an effortless stride that eats up turf. Still a baby, but a scout called him one of the 5 best defensive CFs in the majors, and you can see why - give him a couple more years to develop instincts and a better feel for his pitchers and ML hitters and I see multiple Golden Gloves in his future.

Hitting is more of a question, still needs to add strength and improve his feel for the K-zone, but he's not a free swinger and has quick hands, Just might need a couple years for his offense to catch up to his defense - but his defense is so good I doubt he sees the minors again.

Of course, there's Crawford in the wings, another potential Golden Glove CF, tearing up A ball, and should be promoted to Jersey Shore soon. At 19, he's still growing into his body, but could be special in 2-3 years.

Meanwhile Pache should return next week, once a top prospect, dumped b/c his bat went south of the Mendoza line, but seems to have been resurrected in Philly. Another top defensive CF.

The darkhorse is Kroon, just promoted to Lehigh, 26 years old but extenuating circumstances, little over 1000 PA in the minors, due to COVID and injuries (great spring last year, including with the ML team, then hurts his ankle 2 games into the season). Jack of all trades who plays all positions except maybe SS and C. Playing CF for Lehigh.

I'm pretty sure I had seen a stat that indicated when he was called up he had the highest defensive runs saved of any outfielder in the minor leagues at that point. Not just Eastern league, or AA. the entire full-season minor leagues from AAA all to Low-A.

He has 5 defensive runs saved in just 144 innings. (16 games)

To put in perspective looking at all MLB CFers

#1) Kevin Kiermaier: 13 DRS (714.1 inn)
#2) Daulton Vasho: 12 DRS (321.1 inn)
#3) Kyle Isbel: 9 DRS (470.1 inn)
#4) Brenton Doyle: 7 DRS (638.0 inn)
#5) Alek Thomas: 7 DRS (582.0 inn)
#6) Harrison Bader: 6 DRS (533.0 inn)
#7) Johan Rojas: 5 DRS (144.0 inn)
#8) Jake Myers: 5 DRS (672.1 inn)
#9) Luis Robert: 5 DRS (915.0 inn)

So he's in 7th despite having considerably fewer time than almost anyone else in front of him to accrue DRS. 144 innings = 16 games.

He's recording about 0.35 DRS per inning. Dalton Vasho who is at #2 with 12 DRS has acrrued about 0.37 per inning and the only CFer with a higher pace than Rojas.

Although UZR seems to favor Rojas as he's at 26.0 UZR/150 which is #1 among all CFers with at least 100 innings.

UZR/150
#1) Johan Rojas 26.0
#2) Daulton Vasho 21.3
#3) Brenton Doyle 20.2

so UZR/150 projects if he played 150 games*9 innings in CF he would save 26 runs over the course of a season.

Yall want so badly to be the braves... but the braves arent nearly this much fun of a team.
