Yeah, it's all been said here, and it was all said before. He didn't develop in the Q and in fact took a huge step back as an over-age player when he should have been dominating, especially in that league. And now in his rookie professional campaign he's a JAG ECHLer. There's absolutely nothing there to suggest he's even a quality AHL-level player. It would be one thing if he brought some sort of unique or interesting skill set to the table, but he doesn't. He's not that big, the edge he plays with doesn't really do much, and he doesn't have professional-level offensive skills. So he's a middle-six ECHL guy.

We absolutely should not and will not sign him to an ELC. Honestly I completely forgot he was playing for our affiliate until I saw that he was called up.

well, for sure, this call-up is his last chance to impress enough earn an NYR ELC

March 1 date is approaching, where newly signed contracts don't start until next NHL season

I don't expect him to earn it,
but my weakness is i give kids benefit of the doubt right up the end 8^(

Did he go down on a conditioning stint? How long is he down there?
EDIT: I see the tweet. What is the max length he can play down there?

They're usually about two weeks---sometimes 5/6//7 games depending where they fit the player into the schedule.

For Jones this is pretty much going to run into the trade deadline. He may have played his last game for us. The Rangers don't have a lot of faith that he'll become a regular game in game out player. My guess is the Rangers are going to try to somewhat reconfigure what their defense is going to look like for next season and at least some or most of that is going to happen during the summer months.

It wouldn't shock me if K'Andre or Braden get moved. Vaakanainen has one year left as an RFA so the Rangers control him but I'd guess the Rangers want to upgrade even the bottom pairing so he might be a guy that moves into the spot Jones has been holding down the last couple years. I don't think Fox is going to move. Rangers do need a defenseman (really they need two) who can run a power play. I think after signing his 5 year deal Borgen is staying. Probably K'Andre and Schneider too but they'll be available.

nice net drive from othmann on the chmelar goal. nifty pass too but wish he had shot it?

The one thing I’ll say about Othmann is that I’m not at all concerned with him not shooting the puck. If anything he’ll be a guy who shoots too often. He loves shooting from everywhere. He obviously saw an opportunity and Chmelar open and it worked.

Chmelar with a cool 3 point game.

Sykora with a 2 point game.

Chmelar with 20 points on the season in 51 games. It’s going to be a tall task but if he could get to 28-32 points that’s a very successful rookie season for him at age 21.

Sykora has 23 points in 51 games this year, which matches his total from 68 games last year. Again, if he could get to that 30 point threshold this season that’s a very successful year. He’s only 20 years old.

I really like both of these kids. After Othmann and Berard who to me are NHLers after the deadline, these are the next duo of bottom-6 players I could see coming in and impressing for various reasons. With Edstrom and Rempe already with the big club, and Othmann and Berard close to call ups, it’s going to be interesting how Drury uses some of these chips.

I haven’t even mentioned Roobreck or Laba either.

Roobreck now has 20 points in 52 games as a 20 year old. He probably needs to marinate another full season but at 6’7, he’s going to be an interesting one to watch develop.

Laba has both the speed and size to be a 3C at the NHL level. I think people are going to impressed with him when he reaches the AHL level this year.

For those people who are unfamiliar with the AHL, at least for me, the threshold for being in consideration for the NHL is around 40-45 point while providing some very good to elite skill that can translate . Cuylle has his physical play. Sykora has his 2-way play and motor. Chmelar will be his size, speed and physical play. These guys all are progressing pretty well in a disappointing season overall.
