Schwarber’s at a -0.6 WAR according to Baseball Reference. No player to hit 40+ home runs in season has been a negative WAR player ever. Bichette was the closest.

Playing most of your games at Coors field in the steroid era really deflates your value in retrospect. He had an OPS of ~.900 and when you adjust for park and era, he was exactly a league average hitter! That seems a bit harsh, but combined with the bad defense and neutral base running, he's considered a negative value.
