That’s why you wait for like round 4 or 5 to draft on tools. Problem is they’ll be less investment to get them on the field.

Stroud was not good last night but to be fair his receivers right now are terrible. Tank Dell is barely a #3 receiver let alone a #1.
Stroud is not the issue. The Texans haven't had a competent oline in over a decade. It starts there. This year they are terrible.

If our bar of drafting for tools puts Richardson and someone like Rattler on even ground, we're not actually saying anything. We're just talking in platitudes. I liked them both coming out. But they weren't comparable in any way.

Problem with this chart, devalues WRs who are good at getting separation - b/c they'll have a low rate of "contested throws." Needs a third axis.

It's always been that way. 50 college starts was the standard for scouts, b/c you could see a kid develop and how he adjusted as DCs game planned for him.
This may explain why lesser talents often succeed over top talents at QB - lesser talents are far more likely to stay in college and get that additional experience, Hurts is a good example. And the transfer portal allows QBs to move on and get an extra year of starting in a good program.
Problem is agents often tell kids they're ready to get them to come out to get that 5% of that 1st rd contract, or the kid is greedy.
Arch Manning has two Uncles counseling him to be patient, he's learning as a redshirt, then will start two years after watching for two years, and might even stay as a senior. NILs make deferring your big payday less painful. And Peyton can tell him what to expect starting for a terrible team.

Think with the Eagles, the bye week allowed them to self-scout their new schemes and what was working.
1) Fangio's base defense is now a "3 DT" formation, before he was gong with a 4 man line with 2 DEs. This allows him to move the DE/OLBs around, and makes it harder to run inside. Getting DeJean on the field is the icing on the cake. He's perfect inside where lack of deep speed is hidden but his size and IQ play up.
2) They're running more, but just as important, they stopped running Hurts laterally, he's lost the burst to do that, but is still a power RB on inside runs and draws and is elusive in short areas. He also takes fewer hits running N/S. However, Cowher is right, you pass early to run late - Barkley gets stopped a bunch in the first half, but is a load against tired legs in the 2nd half. You run early to set up the pass, you run late to ice the game.
3) Teaching and using people properly. Fred Johnson was awful the first game at RT, same with his first game at LT, last week he was fine against a good pass rusher. Stoutland rules! Steen has settled in at RG. Q looks more confident each game. Huff is a better DE than OLB, Smith is becoming a complete OLB, Dean has settled in at ILB, Baun as a hybrid LB.

The name that I pointed out was quite low on the Contested% axis precisely because he does create separation.
Although let me say this since we're on the topic. Be extremely careful with how we treat the various Separation metrics out there. They all measure it differently and we have to understand what we are and are not saying. For example, NFL's Next Gen Stats version is a narrow view of specifically targeted receivers at the time of the catch.

They also didn't give Johnson any help. They used him largely the way Mailata would have been.

I would hope the coaches get a vote of confidence from the GM if they are drafting a raw toolsy QB high.
