Correct. Being Released means you're exempt. Only players whose contracts expire count.

You only have to be in the top 35% of contracts to qualify, so it's possible. But those are some CHEAP players.

For sure. I mean, I don't want Howie to only target those guys, but I guess I'm saying it'd be wise for Howie to use these first few days primarily for some bargains rather than even bothering with most top guys.

Or look for some trades, of course. People keep yapping about Ekeler, so I dunno.

Here's my theory why they went with Desai as DC.

Howie has decided that the Fangio type defense will work with mediocre talent, i.e., cheaper contracts, veterans on one year deals and later round picks for the most part.

Once you pay Hurts, you have to make tough choices.

Since even with elite talent, it's hard to build a top defense, better to put your resources into the offense, and scheme around lesser talent on defense.

So go with a "bend don't break," multiple fronts to get good match-ups for DL, skimp at LB and S.
You only have so many high picks and money for contracts.
