Sounds like Elliss is having a really nice camp and he flashed a smidge last year in my eyes.

I’m already more worried about safety.

Oh that’s bad too. But I can at least see a road to having 3-4 guys who won’t kill you. And options like Ringo who can do it in a pinch.

They’ll only have 2 LBs on the field quite a bit, but they have the same questions as the Safeties plus having no one who has a prayer behind them.

The thing I’m really interested in is what they think Edmunds can do. Kempski specifically pointed out he’s gotten some run at both the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense. Maybe that’s the real plan.

They’re not good. They also cost nothing and play positions for which they have absolutely no depth. Zero complaints. But also zero expectations.

Look at Kempski’s latest 53 man projections. He has 3 true LBs making the team. They had to do something. Maybe one of them plays well enough to be a guy who can take situational snaps and not totally kill you. That would be welcome.

Sigh. That's what I expected, but I'll take it.

Thank you as always my man.

Do you think they'll use Nolan Smith in a hybrid type role a bit more to help compensate?

They’ve tried it in camp, so I think that’s a good bet. Desai is a true Fangio-school guy, so this wouldn’t mean as rigid of a role as it would have last year. They won’t be afraid to line Smith up off the ball and send him anyway. You’re going to see A LOT more Stunts. A LOT.

I should also mention that I think people are writing K’Von Wallace off too quickly. I absolutely loved that pick. He did not fit Gannon’s approach at all. That doesn’t mean he’ll be a star. But I think he can still be an NFL player.

Every steeler fan I’ve ever seen comment on him, pretty much unanimously mentions him at dimebacker.

So I’m not really sure what they plan on doing with him and Reed. Feels like we have 8 box safeties.

Move Jack to RB. :sarcasm:

Still one of the most ridiculous things I saw in college football. Right there with Ahmad Brooks returning kicks at UVA.

Bucs are gonna regret going cheap on a QB this season...Baker is not gonna lead us to ..well anything but a better draft pick

Right now, Ghost is locked into FS. Seems they are content to rotate Wallace in deep looks and Edmunds in dime as a LB, which makes a lot of sense with Edmunds being a bigger safety and better in the run game than the pass.

With that said, I cant imagine Howie is done at S. I personally dont see Wallace as a starting caliber safety and think hes best reserved for a backup/special teams role. A few guys I am watching closely this preseason as potential trade targets:

Antoine Winfield Jr - lets get it out of the way that this is a pipedream, but hes in the last year of his contract and the bucs are rebuilding...maybe they listen?

Budda Baker/Kevin Byard - I dont think we can afford what they want to get paid, but they are damn good players and disgruntled would both be great additions as players. still have 2 years remaining so they'd have to be ok with playing on their current deals with us.

Jeremy Chinn - similar to winfield, doubt hes going anywhere but the Panthers are very young and hes in the last year of his deal

These are the only guys I think would be clear upgrades over what we currently have.

To me personally, the line between a good backup and the 22nd best starter is so small that it shouldn't swing opinions on a player. If you can be a DB who doesn't completely kill your team, that has a spot on every NFL roster.

I don't think they can afford to pay a Safety, so that's the beginning and end of the conversation to me. Unless you're talking about a rookie deal, they're non-starters. Those becoming available are few and far between.

I would also tell you that the various Safety positions are the most difficult in football to evaluate and are the one most hampered by the broadcast camera angles. You have no idea what they're doing or why on most snaps.

With that dumpster fire of an org, I would expect the players to balk at change and hard work.

I love it. I wish they still had Dan around.

Nah, they need it. They've been an unfocused and unserious country club on offense since Gruden came in. The local media isn't hearing from players in this kind of negative light, either. Sounds like so far Bieniemy has been intense but fair, and spends way more time encouraging and calmly coaching than yelling. But he will rip an ass crack in twain when needed.

They don't have an offensive line though, because Ron decided not to have one. So that's going to be interesting. So it's probable nothing matters.

I cost myself a little bit of odds by waiting a day too long, but I did pick up some Josh Uche futures. I still found 70:1 to lead the league in Sacks.
