I wonder if we ever find out, but what made today so special to make the move?

My prying mind must know.

I don't hate this move. Hayes definitely is not my first choice of the forwards available but people are reacting to this like we traded a valuable asset for a scrub. If we just added another 20-20 defensively responsible forward with upside for a 5th rounder I don't see how you complain about that outside of if they give him a ridiculous deal but we will have to see how that pans out.

You’ve been here long enough to know this team could trade MacDonald for Ovechkin and people around here would still have something to bitch and cry about.

I don't have an issue with this trade and i certainly don't have an issue with the player.

Sorry guys, i can't share in your disgust until we see what he gets paid. And honestly, $6 mil is what i expect, so i can't be outraged at that. I really hope it's no more than 5 years though.

IF Hayes repeats last season, he's a positive addition. He can play middle 6 center or middle 6 RW. That's no guarantee he is that player going forward. But that player was far better than someone like Brock Nelson. He's been pretty vanilla over his career, but he was much better than that for the Rangers last season. He was French Vanilla, if you will.

Problem is they basically traded a pick to sign a player to a market contract. It will likely be 6x6 -- that seems an inevitability. Maybe that's best case. It's not nightmarish, but I won't begrudge anyone for being less than elated. It will have ramifications. It's also possible he doesn't get protected in expansion. But this isn't Hextall. Fletcher gave out quite a few NMCs for Minnesota. It also means they are likely not planning on Frost (especially) and Farabee to start the season. This is a move, with a whiff of desperation, to legitimize their "bias for action." That doesn't mean it won't help the roster because of course it does.

I gave up on Bread Man as soon as Florida hired Q.

Duchene I had hopes for but with about 15 other teams likely gunning for him and a few of them looking for a 1C, the odds were slim.

yeah there's gonna be a massive bidding war for Duchene. there's no way we can outbid teams like Montreal for him. i can see some teams throwing 10m+ at him to be their 1C. makes no sense for the Flyers to do that.

i guess if we wanted a C, Hayes was the next best thing. still makes me nervous though. it better be short term.

Hayes I get fills a 2c but ask Jets fans about MIA playoffs. Give me a reason why Hayes and depth on this team is enough to make playoffs. Maybe Seattle will grab in a couple of years when Frost or Patrick are ready for 2c.. SIGH

I don’t despise the player. Overreactions aside.

I just don’t like giving out big deals to guys I’d put in the average category. I’d overpay a true talent like Duchene. Hayes is not that player.

While I am not gonna sit here and say I’m salivating over Hayes, Patrick isn’t going to play with shitty 3rd line players. Unless we consider a mix of Voracek, Lindblom, TK, JVR, Giroux, and someone like Frost shitty.

I still think a trade is going to be made. More gut feeling but I think someone like Voracek might be gone. No reasoning but just a gut feeling there

i feel the same. i don't like massive contracts to mediocre players either. this could be bad. guess we'll wait and see what happens.

I am a slightly evil man.

Imagine if this summer Fletcher also deals one of Ghost/Jake in what’s thought of as an underwhelming deal.

That on top of what’s likely an overpayment in term coming for Hayes. The rage will be beautiful.

That logic doesn't work.

It's the same as when TK was demoted... he was still great but his scoring and impact suffered because he was playing too little and with inferior players who held him back. This could easily go the same way and it's terrible for the team.
Except who was our #3C and #3LW when TK was demoted?

In the end, we want AND SHOULD HAVE 3 lines that can score.

JVR and Bozak played on the Leafs 3rd line and produced. In the end, it's up to Patrick to prove he is without a doubt better than Hayes now and take that icetime from him.

Like it or not, but if Patrick had done that this year, we wouldn't have gone after Hayes.

Ya know how feel when your team makes a trade and you’re pumped and brimming with optimism...
I’m here shaking my head on this one!
Fourth organization for this dude in his short NHL career!
I just don’t get it!...

In a simulation
Kevin Hayes the last three seasons:
54 points / 40 ES
44 points / 34 ES
49 points / 36 ES

Flyers need a center, people don't want to give up any of the prospects or the 11th pick to upgrade the team. Flyers give up a fifth round pick to (likely) secure Hayes long before 7/1 and be able to move on with filling other needs, people lose their mind and complain
