Philly gets the worse player but saves a couple million

If Philly can use that additional cap space to get someone from the UFA pool such that

Atkinson+UFA = Voracek then I think Philly is in the better position because they can then spread offense i.e. have 2 guys to do the damage on different lines compared to voracek only on one line

in the cap world quality depth is what it is all about IMO

Ron Francis keeps on taking L's.

He drafted someone in the 2nd round (3rd pick of the 2nd round) who was ranked #192, that's a huge reach. He's wasting so many assets.

Its looking pretty bad I agree, some headscratchers for sure, he must be planning on massive free agency spending? Hamilton and Landeskog? I have no idea. But this team so far isn't going to be any Vegas.

So columbus trades a player who actually wanted to be there and was invested in the area for a veteran guy who might net them a couple more meaningless wins for a rebuilding team. Hm.

The angle for Columbus notwithstanding tactical fit or other moves is that they get out from an extra year of a bad contract in a few years when in theory they hope to be good again and need the cap space to spend on useful players.

People keep saying Voracek makes more but that extra year at the end of Atkinson’s contract is a big deal because he’s going to be absolutely worthless by then and taking up a bunch of cap space.

No, that's if you're going normal all-in.

The Flyers are going stupid all-in, and Fletcher's plan has been plenty stupid.
The Flyers never have a plan -- they just always wing it and spend to spend. Hextall's plan was the closest to being a legit, decent plan, but he refused to sell high on Giroux and Jake to facilitate a premier rebuild. Fletcher is just a cardboard cutout GM who is awful at his job -- but he's been this man for years.

I dont even. What? What does Francis have to do with this? Why would he want either player? His drafts in Carolina paid plenty of dividends and this draft will have the most different lists out of any...I think we can trust the guy to draft and develop.

Think this is a W for CBJ once again.

Atkinson with the longer contract and a worse player. Gives the Flyers a bit extra flexibility but considering what Fletcher has done over the last 24 hours that is probably a bad thing for Flyers fans.

Opens up more money for Hart / Sanheim / backup goalie.

And hopefully Cam regains some goal scoring, he will have passers to get him the biscuit here.

Its kind of a reversal of the Hartnell for Umberger deal years back. This time Columbus is the one looking for less term.
That said, Im guessing they just want playmakers to get Laine going and play more fun hockey through the early stages of this rebuild

What is with Cbus drafting guys high, trading them to Philly for their prime, and then trading to get them back to cross the finish line?

As a Devils fan I approve of all the moves Fletcher has made so far. Let's hope he continues on this path.

Jarmo has been on fire these past two days.

More shakeup for two teams that had disappointing seasons.

Maybe the trade seems like mostly a wash on paper but can't necessarily predict how the team and player may improve with the changes.

Seems like a very strange deal... I thought Atkinson was a huge part of the CBJ franchise i'm surprised they'd move him unless he wanted out of the rebuild.
