I dont see a thread for the Burning Bird of Conquest.
This guy has literally saved our season after Quick and Cal completely shat the crease.
He makes the league minimum while Cal and Quick are both pulling $5M to suck.
Quick gets a pass because he gave us 2 Cups; thank you sir and enjoy retirement. If you would like to coach please let us know.
When was the last time a Kings G went 10-2? Quick in his prime?
In the meantime, Phoenix you are our guy. I dont know why you have been so good but I will gladly take it.
Blake get off your ass and extend this guy.
We all know he is our only legit NHL goalie. Don't fu*k it up.

I think Martin Jones went 8-0 at some point during the 2013-2014 season. Scrivens also had a sterling record during that stretch; Quick missed the first half of the year, I think. That's the closest thing I can remember to this stretch by Copley.

I love what he's doing, but goaltending is so erratic that I do not want Blake to walk into the same issue he did with Petersen. If we can re-sign him for ~2 years at a number below $2M, great. If not, we need to approach goaltending like Carolina or Colorado does until we have a legit blue chipper in the pipeline again.

Very reminiscent of Budaj. We'll be trading Copley and Grans for Semyon Varlamov soon enough, don't worry.

its weird because all those backups that did well in relief did it when Quick was hurt for a period of time. This time around its because neither Cal nor Quick have been good this year and we had to throw a hail Mary and its worked and honestly saved the season. How long can he keep it up? Who knows, but he's been fantastic.

TBF, Quick was supposed to be the backup.

He’s done well. He’s done a solid job but everyone desperate to sign him needs to calm down.

He is 33rd in sv% amongst goalies that have played 10 or more games (90.04). He had been far better than Quick and Petersen but he’s just doing the base job of any NHL level goalie. Thats no criticism of him in the slightest but the clamour to tie him down is a reflection of the play of our #1 and #2 goaltenders. If he keeps going and gets that sv% up 91 by the Play-Offs then maybe start thinking about him taking the backup job, but there is no rush here.

Throw all his stats out there , not just the worst one.

I'm not trying to tout the guy for the Vezina here, I totally get where you are coming from.
I would like to extend him for another year if he keeps this up for a solid interval. He could be a quality NHL backup who can play some games for us and allow us to sign another guy who is a solid known quantity. Even with Quick's deal off the books next year the Cal contract will constrain us in our ability to improve the cage. Copley-Cal is honestly our most likely and least expensive option. I just hope Ranford could get Cal back to being able to be an NHL player.

That's not just cherry picking some random stat. Copley is an average goalie. He's 13th in goals against average, 33rd in save percentage, and his goals saved above average is -0.2. We are a good offensive team with a decent defense and average starter. It's honestly kind of insane that he has the record he does.

I find a goalie's even strength save percentage to be relatively indicative of how well they're doing. Copley has a .921 save percentage at even strength, good for 20th in the league. Quick and Petersen are near the worst in the league at .898 and .893, respectively.

Here's a pretty crazy stat though: Petersen has the second-worst single-season power play save percentage (minimum 10 starts) in recorded history (I think they started tracking this in 1997). His .694 save percentage when opposing teams were on the power play this year means that he gave up nearly one goal every three shots. Only Dieter Kochan for the 2000-01 Lightning was worse, at a .692 save percentage. The next worst in Kings history is Barry Brust in 2006-07 at .750.

Save percentage over a stretch is absolutely the most important stat. Goals against average is absolutely a team stat and reflects the team in front as much as anything - It’s the stat I pay least attention to when looking at goaltending in all honesty.

We can start getting into high/low danger shots if you want I guess. He’s 37th in saves above expected at -0.5, 37th in wins above replacement, 6th in rebounds per save (Petersen is 2nd so make of that what you will). He’s 37th in high danger unblocked shot sv% (Quick 54th, Petersen 65th). He‘s 17th for medium danger (Petersen 3rd. Quick 55). 11th in low danger (tied with Quick and Petersen is 5th).

Have I missed anything?. Most is in line with the sv%, which is why it’s rarely worth looking at the rest.

As I’ve said I wasn’t criticising the guy, just pointing out that he’s been solid and nothing more or less. There is a reason he was available as our 3rd choice. It now seems like I’m trying to take him apart, which I’m not but I am certainly not being selective in my assessment.

What the numbers do tell me is that it’s definitely mental with Cal, he’s the better goalie in medium and low scoring scenarios but panicking in the high danger situations. That definitely supports the eye test.

Being rock solid is all i ask from a starter goalie.
If you need All Star performances on a daily base, something is wrong with the team anyways.

Copley is doing great and i feel very comfortable with him just by eye test.
He plays invisible without highlight saves and this is when a goalie is doing great

I tend to agree, but I don't think he's the guy to take us to the next level.

At the top % of the game, that'll make a difference. Look at the Boston game--the biggest difference was Swayman saved their asses long enough to turn it around.

I agree that you don't want to hide your problems with good goaltending and I fully agree that was Copley does best is NOT LOSE us games and that's the most important first step. It's nice because it puts the responsibility back on the team D. But when we start running into Bostons, I think it will make it apparent that Copley is merely very good--and for now, that's a good problem.

I don’t disagree with any of that. However he’s not yet shown he can be a starter over the long haul which is why I’m advocating holding off if he shows he can manage the workload after another 25 games then they need to start thinking about it. They also need to think about length of contract because the level he is currently hitting won’t be enough to contend.

The better situation is that Cal gets his head together, but that’s far from certain at this point.

I would say that our highest priority right now is a great goalie prospect.
We won't win anything the next 3 years, which gives us enough time to develop the right starter.

I hate to say it since i was really high on Petersen and even defended his new contract but he is not a NHL starter goalie and is way overpaid for backup.

I am still extremely high on Portillo who can be had extremely cheap, since he doesn't wanna sign in Buffalo.
A 6'6 top 10 goalie prospect for cheap is a no brainer. It would be a bummer if Blake isn't even trying to get him

I still think he is a flash in the pan and more of a result of improved play in front of the goaltender. For this team to get out of round 1 I think we need Quick or to bring in someone else. Great story for now, but definitely not long term solution IMO

Tell me more about Portillo? Based on the trade board it sounds like Buffalo could be in need of RHD. Maybe Durzi for him?

When i talked about Portillo, the Buffalo Peeps were even willing to trade his rights for Walker or any other RHD

He is a behemoth 6'6 goalie from Sweden playing right now for Michigan University where he took the starter goalie job as a fresh man.
Portillo is rated within the top 10 NHL goalie prospects and was also named a USHL 1st All Star in 2020

I would be thrilled to get his rights for Durzi or Walker.
We might open a trade proposal on the trade thread to see if that opinion changed
