Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

If Vancouver isn’t interested in rebuilding, Toronto can likely offer talent very few teams can match

Vancouver can pick between Nylander and Marner
Marner would actually be pretty enticing, but the trade needs to be bigger. Or something else also in the works for it to make sense

Wouldn't the Petterson cap hit be even higher than the Nylander one? Imo if the Leafs are up for a lateral move like this, they will go for a d man

McDavid is as good as gone in 3 years When a Ufa. Book it.
Just like the people who said Matthews was going to the USA. McDavid probably doesn't even know what he will do yet. Just because you want it to happen doesn't mean it will

There's very few teams that have the assets and have the cap space even after next season to sign him to a long term deal. Canucks are basically his best bet if he wants to get paid and be on a team that will improve after this season and a lot of the dead weight is shed. The teams that do have assets or cap space are worse right now than Vancouver so it makes no sense for him to want a trade to one of these teams. This is all negotiating tactics. Canucks will sign him but it's going to be a lot higher than people think. $12 million a season or more I'm guessing.

I don't think that's a complete list. Teams will find a way to fit Pettersson if he was traded after this season.

For instance, Carolina could offer something like Necas (probably a $7M cap hit next season if he has another similar season), Kotkaniemi ($4.8M cap hit), D prospect Scott Morrow, a 1st, + other picks/prospects and would fit Pettersson into their cap.

I'm not saying that will happen, but a lot of teams can make it work if they so choose.
Oh really? thanks for the info.:sarcasm:

Obvious is obvious. Clearly every team could trade for Pettersson. I just listed the ones that could do it the easiest as they don't have cap issues and have enough assets that they can made a trade that doesn't affect their teams roster that much.

Sorry if this seems harsh but you are the 3rd person to reply to me with the exact same post.

It strikes it would probably be a team that liked him in his draft year

He is clearly the best center from his draft class
I know the rangers trued so hard to move up back then

You don't need to have liked him at the draft to want to acquire him now. Really, this is all on the Owner. Could have taken a step back in 21-22 after seeing how badly the contracts that Benning handed out to Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel were going. Just 1 more year and with a fresh new GM, could have bought the club that 1 year grace period to free up cap room to make big changes to the club in 2022 off-season.

Again, why trust an organization that has for 3 straight seasons target the playoffs to start the year only to be out of the race 1/4 of the way into it. Why doesn't the results on the ice match the expectations?

Big brain ideas to let Toffoli and one do the best defensive defenceman in Tanev go for nothing

Don't want either of them. They're floating wingers making over $10m. Like, for free. Let alone trading Pettersson for them.

If we have to move Petey and ownership refuses to blow it up, we need a young C coming back, a top prospect, and a top 4 defenseman.

Carolina makes the most sense to me. As a team that has so much value in the org they can afford to move the parts we need to land that elite #1C they need.
I could see Columbus make a push should he be made available. Dont like including Johnson but Im sure he would need to be involved. Maybe Johnson+Peeke/Boqvist+prospect/pick

Can't really blame him. If the team has a bad year no one can accuse him of pulling a bait and switch. Worst case scenario if he is traded I just really hope they don't bungle the deal.

Necas, Nikishin, and a 1st :)

This is an example of a return that I would be happy with.

Seems fair to me and a move that would make Carolina the class of the league.

No doubt. One of or both of Pettersson and Aho on the ice ~43 min per night (factoring in special teams) is deadly.

Assuming that the TT is not re-signed and Necas goes in the trade to VAN it only marginally changes their cap structure, also assuming EP40 signs for ~10.5 - 11.5M.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world. Would garner a monster package and has no trade protection. The team is certainly better run now than with Benning but who knows.

Package would start with a recently drafted top pick, 1st, additional pieces…

The only thing, if they move EP then would they finally have to rebuild?

Losing your franchise player is always bad

By Vancouver's standards,

A successful season is one that lasts 82 games with no COVID delays/cancellations.

I like to interpret this as only re-sign long term if team is successful, otherwise it's short term to UFA

Sorry if this is harsh, but maybe the problem was with your post, and not the 3 people that responded.
