So you are saying 5.5M is enough with only 17 players signed and no goalies? What do you think a goalie tandem costs?

Depends on several factors. But there is no way you will convince me that the Caps will have Carlson, Orlov, Jensen, JVR, and Fehervary and not make any other moves on D. I see them making a move to bring in at least one guy in that mix and it's not just a depth guy either.

Samsonov is not trending well so not sure what they will do with him. What does Vanecek get? You tell me.

There are very little holes up front. So the $9M can be spent on the goalies and one move on D. Tight but it just depends on if they keep both Vanecek and Samsonov or one of them. Hard to predict. What are the target for net if the Caps put all the focus in that area? Options seem very limited with goaltending this summer where several teams will be in the hunt.

You’d be hard pressed to find any single player that fits the Capitals needs LESS than Jeff Petry. You could not possibly find anyone the Capitals are LESS likely to trade for Jeff Petry than Hendrix Lapierre (though currently an argument could be made for Carl Hagelin). This trade is horrible in many ways.

Value of what I am saying today that you don't agree with. It's not rocket science.
Clearly not rocket science. You have 100 posts in this thread.

So the value we are talking about is a teams best prospect, a 2nd and player more or less for cap reasons

I want to say we did this last week. Enthusiasm was muted for Petry, to put it mildly. But then I think this is mainly for Habs fans to talk to other Habs fans.

Another thread where the Habs grossly over value a player that’s value is likely negative. Petry would sail thru waivers like his name was Tyler Johnson if and when the Habs cut him.

This deal works value wise if Lapierre come out completely and the 2nd becomes a 6th.

Retaining may be necessary when you want to complete a transaction. Over the next couple of years, these 2M should be useless anyway. If that's what it takes to complete a transaction, you do it imo. Especially in the case of a player wanting out.
When it's the player wanting out, it just makes me want to retain even less, unless the value was exceptional and unrealistic.
3 years of retention, to me, means at least 3 3d rounders or equivalent, in addition to Petry's actual value.
It's not about the 2M or even the cap room, it's about losing flexibility to retain elsewhere, for 3 full seasons.

Sure man, whatever helps you pretend there's no bias
Dude, you're calling someone a troll when he's made and explained his points well enough that you can reply and argue them. You can disagree with them, but he isn't being a troll. Grow up a little.

Then you would be a horrible GM cause you overlook that Petry size/mobility from age 34-36 is still top 4RD quality.

But if you are looking to play nice and agree with others looking for like hits, that's one way to do it. You sure you are not talking about Gallagher and not Petry? ;)

Your post reminds me of some Habs fans agreeing with others that Lehkonen is only worth a 2nd rounder. Too afraid to stand up against the devalue poster narratives.
Petry is not a top 4 anymore and def not worth a 1st pick or a bluechip prospect. Lehkonen is a RFA with control and is still 26. Petry next year won’t be better than he is right now. You will be lucky to have a 3rd pick at his full salary

He's 100% a top 4 what the hell...
Not worth a blue chip tho. His contract is 1-2 year more then teams would like.
I'd make a friendly bet with you Petry will have a better season next year. Specially if his familly returns. Possible the return wouldn't be great without retaining, if that's the case I'd keep him. He's by far the Habs best dman.

Looking at the Caps, they have two contracts expiring in Schultz and Kempny and they could use Petry? Habs offer a young LD on top and are willing to take a contract dump in Hagelin back.

Petry and Clague
for
Hagelin, Lapierre, and a 2024 2nd.
Yeah Petry is not needed in Washington if anything we need to get rid of Carlson to make room for our young D...you would be better off asking Arizona or Philly. Those teams have players more likely to work for a Petry trade....that is the value you are looking at for Petry

On top of that what makes you believe we would even consider trading Lapierre for anything less than Cole Caulfield? Even then the answer would still be Nope

No it does not eat up all your cap space. You have $9M in projected cap space and this deal eats up about $3.5M of it.

Sorry but I disagree. Caps need improvements on D more than up front. You're not going to fill your holes on D this offseason from within. That is some high hopes there for a team that will continue to chase cups for a few years yet. Caps don't have trouble scoring goals but being middle of the pack in goals against is an area that can improve and should improve if you want to be a better team.

Needs in goal? Maybe. Who you thinking? The 38 year old Fleury? Caps are not the only team looking for goalie improvements this summer. That will be difficult. You don't like Vanecek and Samsonov?
If Lapierre is the ask then the answer is a hard no. Caps brass are quite high on him.

I can respect you prefer not to trade Lapierre. We can look at something else but we are getting the futures we want. Late 1st and B prospect or B+ and 2nd rounder with a small cap dump coming as well. Petry is a rare big man with mobility and is not in decline. He will remain a top 4RD from age 34-36.

Caps have 17 players signed with $9M in cap space. Difference between Petry and Hagelin is about $3.5M. Caps still have $5.5M left to make other improvements. I disagree the Caps can't afford him.

Also, said it before and will say it again. Bookmark it... Even if Petry is not a good fit, the Caps are going to look at improvements on D with their cap space. It's possible they improve both at goaltending and on D.
They very well may improve their D but I feel confident it will not be with Petry.

he is really not needed. when both our goalies are blind and no goalie prospects in the system Petry will not do any better then the rest of the mediocre d corp the caps have.

Yeah, Petry might not be a good fit for the Caps and I may have overlooked their goalie situation but yeah... A poster declining and saying he would say no to Caufield for Lapierre. And some people think only the Habs overrate their prospects.

Lapierre is good but not that good. Fringe grade A or B+ type. Never good enough to make the WJC.

I think some Caps fans think I'm trying to "steal" Lapierre away. Not really, they could keep him and we focus on other futures.

I will admit. I may have overlooked the goalie situation. So yeah, I think the Caps need both improvements in net and on D. If they want to remain a contender with the core they have in place for a bit more years yet.

Good luck with the goalie search. There are a few teams looking for goalie improvements this summer. It's not going to be easy

They do need another RHD but certainly not at the expense of Lapierre, at least not if Petry is the name in question. Hagelin will either play or more likely go on LTIR for the last year of his deal since his eye injury seems severe and potentially career ending… the talk after multiple surgeries was more focused on him being able to live a normal life and less about returning to the ice.

They don’t need a LD either. Feverbaby and Orlov are rock solid top four LDs and TvR is solid as well, though I guess if they made TvR 3RD then they could be in the market for a 3LD. They also have Alex Alexeyev and maybe Lucas Johansen, both former first round picks, in Hershey.

I am prepping myself for a Quick, Gibson, or Hellebuyck trade. Petry could have been an option a few years ago before Jensen’s emergence as one of the best defensive RDs in the league but he doesn’t seem to fit now and the cost wouldn’t be worth it.

I like this direction but instead you focus on keeping Petry. He isn’t Needed Nor is he Wanted. If Mtl doesn’t Want him Wsh certainly doesn’t Need him.

In case you haven’t gotten the hint. Caps fans don’t care what you think about our team. You don’t really seem to have a good grasp of the situation your own team is in. I certainly don’t value your evaluation of our team any more than I’d value Any/All of them telling you we don’t want Petry at his Age/Contract/Asset Cost/Risk. Look elsewhere to try to squeeze blood from that stone Washington isn’t going to oblige. Management in Wsh has been clear they won’t trade their Top Prospects for TDL Rentals, I can assure you they’re not going to do so for Aging/Likely Declining Vets on Bloated Contracts.

As for the bolded, maybe you should get your own house in order. Price seems like he may be 50:50 on whether his career is over. If you plan to continue with any of the Habs other options you’ll be in the Lottery for a while.

You're all over the place and it's a nit pick posting style. This is about the Caps cap space and I see needs in net and on D. $9M to use. I understand where they are at but you can carry on that I don't.

What the hell does have to do with Price? Because we have Price, we can't propose a Petry trade? What a joke! At least find some good context to use in your attack eh

Petry is a darn good top 4RD and will remain that way from age 34-36/37. Skaing and mobilty is not fading away like you think it is. You likely think decline in the 30's is some uniform curve you can apply to all players equally. FALSE!
