Looking at the Caps, they have two contracts expiring in Schultz and Kempny and they could use Petry? Habs offer a young LD on top and are willing to take a contract dump in Hagelin back.

Petry and Clague
for
Hagelin, Lapierre, and a 2024 2nd.

Think adding in Lapierre and the 2nd is a bit much TBH, could see Hagelin and a 1st in '22 though instead (or Lapierre flat). Don't know if Petry fits the need though for the Caps would look to them to say if they agree they need a top 4 D

Not sure but I do believe Petry would improve their back end. LD does appear to be a bigger need though which is why I included the young Clague. How high are they on Lapierre? It's probably a no for several Caps fans.

Petry as a RD has value... even in an off season and at his age. He's a smooth skater for his size and he's not overweight so I don't see his skating disappearing. Clearly drowning in Montreal this season.

How happy are the Caps with the Orlov and Jensen pairing?

don't disagree on his value, disagree on where you value him given his contract he's still a 6.25M contract for three more years

Caps say no. We are going to shed salary and maybe add a goaltender instead. We have guys in Hershey that we’ll try at D before adding anything outside the organization.

I doubt the Caps are at the stage of going with youth on the back end with the core you have in place. It's basically chasing cups for the next few years.

Petry/Hagelin flip is basically a saving on what you are paying Schultz right now where Petry is a upgrade on Schultz. I see this D improved with Petry. Also leaves you cap space to make others moves.

Fehervary / Carlson
Orlov / Petry
TVR or Clague / Jensen

It actually eats all our cap space.

Caps more pressing needs are in goal and a top 6 wing.

I like Petry as a player, but we have serious issues in net that need to be addressed.

I disagree that his value is much less than it was this time last year. He's a big RD who is a very good skater and there are no signs his skating is declining. Top 4 RD's are not easy to acquire and you are looking at Petry's stats this year too much. But in fairness, you are not the only one. People tend to dwell at the low points on the rollercoaster ride.

$6.25M for a big RD who has offensive ability and mobility. Signed from 34-36/37. If he was overweight, people might have a point on his decline worries but he his not overweight at 6'-3" and 207 lbs.

No it does not eat up all your cap space. You have $9M in projected cap space and this deal eats up about $3.5M of it.

Sorry but I disagree. Caps need improvements on D more than up front. You're not going to fill your holes on D this offseason from within. That is some high hopes there for a team that will continue to chase cups for a few years yet. Caps don't have trouble scoring goals but being middle of the pack in goals against is an area that can improve and should improve if you want to be a better team.

Needs in goal? Maybe. Who you thinking? The 38 year old Fleury? Caps are not the only team looking for goalie improvements this summer. That will be difficult. You don't like Vanecek and Samsonov?

Wonder if there is a deal to be made around Price, (understanding Cap Space issues), something like Price for samsonov and a cap dump to offset salaries a bit

I disagree, right now your talking about a 34 year old defenseman who teams will rightly question this years performance and wonder if its the start of the slide or if it's an outlier. If I was a GM i'd lean towards the slide if I'm being conservative or towards an outlier if I'm aggressive. Caps are a good fit, but your still askinga team to absorb some serious risk to take on the deal and I just don't think we'll get that large of a return

34-36/37 for a lean big man who will remain a top 4D is not a serious risk. It's too easy to say when a player who is drowning on a bad team. This is not a decline issue with Petry. It's an issue of him drowning on Montreal and needs a new fit.

Like I said, if he was overweight for his age, you might have a point. But he is not overweight and there are zero signs his skating is in decline.

Lappiere is a fringe grade A or B+ type. I'm really not that high on him and he was never a WJC type talent. I'm not asking for a gold mine in futures by taking a cap dump back and Lappeiere/2nd rounder. I think it's subjective but it's not a massive reach in value.

Canucks paid a bigger futures price in the trade for OEL who has larger term and signed till 35. They also were able to unload Eriksson in that trade.

At his age there is too much risk on a free fall collapse on his performance.

Dear Lord :banghead: another Hab fan started Petry thread...... good luck Caps fans!

Tip for the Caps fans don't respond.

It's no different than the Coyotes trying to move OEL last season and I'm asking for less in this trade vs the one the Coyotes/Canucks came to terms with. Keep banging your head on the wall and providing zero substance in your post.

I disagree. I would agree if Petry was showing signs of losing his skating and was overweight for body size but that's not the case. 4 season in a row with 40 pts or more and all of a sudden he is in massive decline cause he is drowning on a bad team this year at age 34?

I'm asking less than what the Canucks paid in the OEL trade. This is not an unreasonable ask for a smooth skating RD who is a legit top 4RD which are rare to acquire. 34-36/37 is not a massive concern like some are making it out to be. Like I said, if he was showing signs of skating decline and was heavy for his body size, I might agree but that is just not the reality of this situation.

If the Coyotes can move OEL who showed bigger decline issues at an earlier age, the Habs will get decent value for Petry this summer.

The Knights just signed the 34 year old Martinez for 3 years taking him to age 36. $5.25M in cap hit.

Fehervary is a 22 year old rookie on the first pair, wdym they cant go with youth on the backend?

There are only room for a few young guys on D on the back end for cup contenders or teams still trying to win. Lets not pretend they have Markar's and Byram's on the back end waiting for a chance.

GM's with a brain won't question his performance. They know the season was a waste under Ducharme and will discount that. He does not play a hard hitting game so his contract should be considered good since similar defensemen are making 9 mil. Will the teams interested have the cap space is the only question.

Everything has been said with Petry. OEL is far better and at a far more likely age to play better.

Keep dreaming Habs fans! Good luck with badgering another fan base to give you value where there isn't any.

Must have missed the part where you took back $11.5m in contract dumps and threw in a 25 year old who put up 39 points in 49 games. That is more points than Caufield in less games to put it in perspective.

A few? They literally only have 1 right now. Their entire d-core is 30+ atm outside of Fehervary. Why would they logically want to add a 35 year old making over 6M for 3 years?

Makar and Byram have no relevance at all here, why bring them up?

OEL has shown signs in decline earlier than Petry. Reality. Better player? Keep dreaming. I see similar top 4D types in their 30's.

Go somewhere else with your dream narratives

Caps fan: No thanks. We've got young D prospects already and there's always another Schultz or Kempny level player floating around in free agency looking for a contender to sign them up on a prove it deal. Our current forwards are ancient and shedding one of the few future offensive players we have is the wrong direction. Not a well thought out proposal....sounds like you just want Laps.

No, I didn't miss anything. I'm asking for less in return.

Comparing Caufield to a 25 year old is weird. Goes to show where your mind is at and the stuff you can find holds little value to this discussion.

Your reaching to devalue the Habs fan base. Reality. But I know where your focus is at now though. It's all about targeting Habs fans and belittle narratives.
