Geez I dunno about that. I seem to recall last year in the playoffs he and Cary Price were massive bright spots for Montreal on that Cinderella run. This year he has been in and out of the line up but I don't think development is necessarily linear. He is a good young player who isn't doing well right now.

The same things were said about Puljujarvi not so long ago and now jealous fans are posting threads about teams screwing the Oilers with a big offer sheet.

Not saying this is the exact trajectory of Caufield but I'd hate to write off a 21 year old player after a strong playoffs just last year.

Just my opinion.
I don’t think so either. Just seeing Habs fans call Zadina a bust while trying to acquire him for the negative value contract of Petry was so typical.

why would Detroit do this deal? It doesn’t time with their rebuild and they part with a high pick young player for an expensive 34 year old having a brutal season right after signing a huge deal.

that’s a horrible thesis for Detroit. For any team really.

Habs will have to see their players perform well before trading them.

Yeah, I don't think this is a fit. You'd add a defenseman of Petry's age to your second pairing if you're contending for a few years to put you over the top. I think Detroit's still up-and-coming, so this doesn't work.

That said, Petry has value. He's an RHD with multiple fantastic seasons under his belt playing on the worst hockey team of the cap era. I have a feeling any team acquiring him will have a steal on their hands

Ahh, okay I get you.

Petry doesn't currently hold a ton of value to me. His age and contract (high AAV and NMC, M-NTC) really limit what Montreal can do with him.

For those Montreal fans who think Zadina is a bust and those Detroit fans who think Caufield is a bust I know a certain team in Edmonton who'd be MORE than happy to take them off your hands. You know, as a favor.

Sounds like a win win situation if DET is done with Zadina.
I don't think Petry would fetch much.
Without retention he would be worth a 5th round pick based on his recent play, age, nmc and AAV.
You should put yourself on LTIR with that post.

Even its wellknown fact that Petry would love to play for the Wings, I cant see a match here considering Seider and Hronek already on the right side. Pittsburgh isnt far away

Both Hronek and Seider can play LD as well as RD, So that's not going to stop Yzerman in getting Petry if he feels he can help the team. But Hughes and Gorton would basically need to retain 50% on Petry for it to happen.

If Bergevin was still the GM, I'd hope Yzerman was calling on Petry!

He would probably be able to come away with Petry + Romanov + a pick for some pittance of an offer

With Gorton there now, I'd stay far away. He is shrewd.

i guess petry at 50 % retained would still have little value . i mean 42 points in 55 games last year means nothing . a strong playoff performance means nothing . oh wait it's detroit. you havnt been to the playoffs in six years and won't be for a few more . he'll be going to a contender not somewhere to be a mentor .

Can't think of many players Detroit would be less interested in than Petry. Age, position, contract, it's all a bad fit.

Make a Zadina for Caufield proposal and we'll talk.

this makes sense although no to the zadina- caufield idea . petry due to his age is not a fit for any rebuilding teams

Would be fit if there would be need for RH shots. But Red Wings is crowded with own people, Seider, Hronek, Lindström.

Left-handed "Petry" would fit nice. That's the need currently.

Detroit wants to move on from Zadina

Montreal 2nd + Petry for Detroit's 2nd, Zadina and Oesterle

Detroit doesn't really have any cap dumps so I just threw in Oesterle because why not. Detroit jumps up a few picks in the 2nd round to offset it.

Zadina has been insanely underwhelming but his draft pedigree + raw talent make him an interesting acquisition for a team that is okay with not being a basement team next year.

Petry has struggled but if there's one team that he would probably love to play for it is the Red Wings. He would be a great 2D behind Seider and could be great for Edvinsson's development

1) No, crazy unsatisfied fans want to move on from Zadina.

2) If we did want to move on from Zadina, we're not taking on your problem contract to do so.

I'm a red wings fan.
I've never liked Zadina when we drafted him, or at any point in his development.
The HFBoards mentality of valuing picks/prospects/unproven players over actual quality NHL players drives me crazy.

This trade is not even remotely close to something I would do.

Funny how Petry is only judged on his current season on a trash fire team and not being a #1D the last few years including taking us to the finals last year, while Zadina is only judged on his draft position from 4 years ago and not on his non-existent development...
Because 34 year old defensemen who are showing signs of decline tend to return to being #1s all the time. Its not like he's exactly the age you'd expect him to start declining or anything.
